In the future Battle.Net will cost money photo

Diablo III’s director Jay Wilson recently told an audience at BlizzCon that Blizzard and Activision are looking to make some money with the Battle.Net service. How Blizzard will be seeking to “monetize” is unknown, but Wilson said it was necessary to keep the financially crippled Blizzard alive and kicking.

From the panel discussion:

We are looking to monetize Battle.Net so that we get to keep making these games and updating features. We kind of have to.

Wilson didn’t elaborate, but I think we all know how much Blizzard has been suffering the past few years. After the colossal failure that was once a promising game, World of Warcraft, Blizzard has had to revaluate its existence and make some tough spending decisions. It’s a shame that World of Warcraft never took off, but we have the massive success (over 15 million subscribers) of Star Wars: Galaxies to thank for that.

For Blizzard's sake, LOL.

A bunch of butthurt D-toiders are cheap to pay, Blizzard has millions of other people that will buy their crappy PC games.

I was actually the one that asked this question.

And he said they're not looking to turn B.net into a subscription service, it's just that some extra features you'll have to pay for.

Hahahahah Diablo 3 is going the way of HellGate:London with the "pay-to-play online" thing.

Guess what happened to Hellgate, hahahahahaha

Ah... Cute kittie!

Battle.Net becoming a paid service is unfortunate, but anybody who didn't see this coming should go out more and see the real world.

@ Linkoman,

My thoughts exactly. I refused to believe it when a friend told me that BLIZZARD was going to split up SC2 to sell us 1 game for the price of 3. It sounded exactly like something out of EA's book. Now they're considering monetizing Battle.net? It certainly looks to me like we are starting to see the effects of Activision on the amazing developer who, until recently, had done no wrong in my eyes.

I'll probably still buy Diablo 3. I liked Diablo as a solo game better anyways.

@moocow,
Exactly. I grew up with blizzard and they've never done anything this stupid until Activision (home of the yearly Guitar Hero's) came along.

I understand the nature of business but the fact that all the small companies are being bought up by EA or Activision is doing nothing good for the industry or the quality of the games. I think that this is just another example of what happens when the quality of the experience for the customer isn't the first priority. Yay! Huge faceless corporations!!

Didn't it used to cost $ back in the day? I'm trying to remember but I bought some Blizzard product that came w/ a subscription to it & some Battle.net t-shirt. I never wore the shirt or redeemed the subscription (if it was a subscription) so I could be imagining it & it was always free. But i could have sworn it was for something to be redeemed (for equal monetary value).

My previous D3 plan:
-Buy D3
-Play on Battle.net with my chums for as long as I want.

My new D3 plan
-Acquire D3
-Play over Hamachi with my chums for as long as I want.

wow where IS the gaming industry going to? I've been browsing the web as of late and everything just connects in a weird way.
Japan not making GOOD games as of late, Koreans coming up in the mmo world, and Americans too.
and this finally proved it, the gaming industry is going in a different direction, everythings going to change in 2-3 years or so, and online gaming will start to boom all over the world. I am thinking blizzard will continue making loads and loads of money, its just that they won't get any money from me. Except warcraft 4 if thats ever going to happen lol.

I'm confused. What does this statement mean? "After the colossal failure that was once a promising game, World of Warcraft" How is the most successful MMO of all time a failure? This is just Activision tying to put spin on charging for other services? I really don't get it. Do they really expect me to feel sympathy for them? Oh, gee, poor Activision has to charge for battle.net because WoW isn'y making money? If WoW isn't making money, they aren't handling their cash flow very well. It's not a gamers fault if you dumped all your profits into the stock market guys. I won't be paying for your mismanagement.

I doubt they'll charge a monthly fee. They'll probably have some kind of "gold" fee-based membership that gives you access to stuff like rankings, ladders, tournaments, early access to DLC, player profiles, etc.

And people will pay it even though they don't HAVE to because many gamers can't stand the idea of playing an unranked game when they could be playing a ranked game.

If they monetize features of strictly the battle.net service that have absolutely no effect on the gameplay, items, online components... then I won't be upset.

But if there is a bullshit HellGate: London style subscription that is required just to have access to some of the gameplay features (any areas, items, etc), I will not be getting this game... and D3 is without a doubt my most anticipated forthcoming game.

Seriously Blizzard, stop with the spewing of shit from your mouths.
There is no need to charge users to "keep making these games and updating features" seeing as how D3 is functionally a graphically enhanced sequel to the current games... which are still being supported (by advertising banners, I believe).

Contrary to what they just said, Blizzard is continuing to make games (D3 and SC2) while still updating their current ones (D2, SC, and W3 still get patched) without monetizing Battle.net.

Seriously, this is fucking ridiculous.

From what I've heard this was only going to be for like advertising in Battle.net, if they're actually planning on making users pay monthly fees then Blizzard really needs to go jump off a cliff because it was one of the few companies that cared about its games and its fans, but recently its sort of been backstab after backstab. If they do start charging for Bnet, they had better turn it into the Xbox live of PC gaming and start supporting more games like CoD games and crap.

I am 24. I bought starcraft 10 years ago and it was/IS, besides the Halo Trilogy, the best game of my life. Therefore I can criticize their creators(I Love Them). Not only did I love the plot and singleplayer campaign at that time, but I definitly WASTED thousands of hours playing it in battlenet. ADND I'M GLAD! So did many other hundreds of thousands, not to say millions worlwide(including Korea).
Wasn't it for the multiplayer facet, it would never have been such a marketing sucess neither would Blizzard have grown so much. Neither would it gave kept millions of adepts. Setting a fee for battlenet acess would be considered somewhat a "betrayal" to all of us, the so said "older guys". We, "20-35..." are a big piece of the cake. So, REMENBER US. We're not like fully grown adults who can pay anything at any time by now. BUT, I agree, some aspects of server customising should be paid, not the Gaming itself. :_|

Sorry for the testament, I do emphatize with Blizzard. Its hard to keep it competitive with other titles and work at the same time to produce a game. They actually spend their lives doin, literally that. And Big Titles and big sales not always mean big salarys. At least for everyone. Still the Starcraft sales should prove extensive considering the millions of fans. My opinion.
