In Russia, StarCraft II could have monthly fees. photo

In Soviet Russia...

I got nothing. But I do have some details on the Russian release of Blizzard's highly anticipated game, StarCraft II. It will come in...installments. The Escapist guesses that they're trying to combat the crazy piracy that goes down in Russia with this release method. Or help with the high cost of the game.

So get this: There's a roughly $35 (999 rubles) version in a standard DVD case, and there's a jewel-cased version for about $17. The more expensive one gets the player a year access to Battle.net's Russian servers. The cheaper one gets you four months access. After this, players will have to shell out 100 rubles (about $3.50) a month for continued access.

As an alternative, players can upgrade to a complete, unlimited access version for about 30 Euros. Blizzard came up with this method to help players that cannot afford the total cost of the full European version.

Knowing this, thinking about the $100 collector's edition to be released in the U.S. makes me feel like a bit of an as*hole.

Wait, does that mean it's cheaper to buy the thirty five dollar version once a year than it is to pay the subscription? Yeesh.

Loop holes FTW!

(3.5x12)+17 = $59 (1 year of access)
$35 = (1 year of access and a shiney new disc each year)

This is lame news for all the Russian Gamers.

$17 for the game and about $40-41 for unlimited access. It works out to be the same price we're paying. I hardly feel bad for them.

I would feel bad for them if blizzard didn't offer the unlimited access.

nice another "pay to play game" from blizzard

WoW ins't enough? for fuck sake

and by analising these news, now i fear than D3 will also have montly fees, i mean it's a RPG like WoW, as popular as starcraft or Warcraft, and ppl will get bored of WoW sooner or later, and what best than another long-waited blizz game to rececive those bored players?

oh blizzard.... oh blizzard.......

Considering I have no more than a passing interest in Starcraft multiplayer I'd welcome this deal in the west. I'd feel less ripped off about the 3 full priced games crap.

In Soviet Russia, videogames were much like they were in the Western world, as they had not yet really begun to hit the mainstream. There is most likely no doubt that some arcade cabinets or even arcades themselves existed in the USSR until its dissolution in 1991, but as in the United States, they were certainly not in their hey-day.

I fail to see how this combats piracy. For battle.net, you need a legitimate cd-key, plain and simple. That's not something you can just get off the internet to play online to your heart's content. For the single player campaign, it wouldn't be surprising if it was online before the game hit retail shelves.

two realeses one with 6 month paid, and the other one with a year prepaid. no unlimited version
and, actually, i won't be surprised if it's just that we, people who get this version, just happened to find out about monthly fee that earlier. not that it will be exclusive to our territory
and for anybody wondering WHY the piracy level is so high, think like that - how it can be lower, if not a lot of publishers giving any kind of support to the territory. why buy something you don't get support for if you can download it (getting the same)

honestly, *nobody* here should be complaining about this, unless it's to envy Russia for getting the same game for cheaper.

yes, cheaper. if they get the cheaper version of the game, which has only 4 months of free online play, and they choose to upgrade to the non-monthly-payment thing (which was said to be roughly 30 bucks or so), they'll be paying close to 20 dollars less than the US price. you *might* be paying slightly more if you buy the 35 dollar version - it all depends on how close the actual price of the upgrade is to 30 dollars.

and, the Escapist article also mentions that the Russians will also have the option of just buying the regular European version of the game, which has the 60 dollar (or, the equivalent for the various european countries) price tag and unlimited online play.

so, basically, the Russians are getting a slightly more flexible way on how they play/pay for the game. they're not getting screwed in the slightest - technically, they're possibly getting the same game for cheaper.

so, yeah... good on Blizzard for doing this!

er... edit - the cheaper version with the upgrade, close to TEN dollars less.
