In the big-assed v1.3 update coming to PlayStation Home, you'll finally be able to launch games directly from Home. And that's any PlayStation 3 game.
With this upcoming update, you'll be able to pop in a disc while in Home and launch the game at any time. Instead of having to exit Home to get started, you'll be magically whisked away to the game's start menu. No silly logging off anymore. Avatars in Home will be identified by separate icons that appear over heads for titles that fully support game launching, says the PlayStation Blog.
Aside from in-Home game launching, there are several other updates coming. Here's some bulletpoints:
- new caching size options ( 3, 5, 8, and 12 GB )
- a new SingStar space
- new emotes and poses for avatars
- everyone gets cameras to snap pictures (see above image)
- new items, like the consumable "shrink potion"
- several other tweaks and features
All of this other stuff is great, but with game launching, Home is the real deal, and you can actually use it to get around and meet up to game. Finally.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
ALL YOU HAVE TO FUCKING DO MENG.
IS.
THE.
POINT?
- Faster/no loading times
- No downloading from place to place
- More developers to support multiplayer game launching in Home.
- The XMB to be instant and fully usable in Home like it is in internet browser.
- The shops to be quick streamlined menus instead of having to walk from store to store
- More friends with PS3s
THEN, Maybe, I wouldn't mind Home.
Its for launching the game with several people so you all play together not just to launch it to play by yourself like you would from the XMB....
WHAT?!
*SINGSTAR SPACE: Pretty cool
*NEW AVATAR EMOTES/POSES: Okay....
*FREE IN-HOME CAMERAS: Sound a'ight
*NEW ITEMS & SHRINKING POTION: Cool, and WHAA?!?!, REALLY?!?, SERIOUSLY?!?
As for tweaks and features, whatever makes Home better...
Shit, maybe now I can acess MGO without having to go through the MGS4 main menu.
The rest of the stuff sounds good too. I like how you'll be able to see how clothing looks on your avatar before you buy it. I wish they would allow you to do that in MGO...
Nice to see Home becoming a little more relevant.
My only interest in Home is to create an apartment that can showcase my trophies or interests in a digital personal space. Unfortunately, there's absolutely nothing available to make a personal space resemble that, and essentially everything has a pricetag associated with it. Even if I were to pay $15 (which is astronomically too high), I'd only get a change in scenery and neon-glowing chairs. Nothing about the program seems to let you create a personalized space.
What's worse is that when you leave your private zone, you're left wandering around game-themed areas to find female avatars being constantly harassed. It's less useful than wandering around an NPC-less MMO capitol city.
I'm shocked at how lacking Home is.
Win.
Home still needs...
1) TV's in your personal space - my friends and i would happily sit in home watching the AVI's off our PS3's.
2) Photo frames
3) Headset Chat
4) Music - either stereos in personal space or music rooms like the Japanese and American Home's have.
5) A giant Robot like the japanese home has - Japanese Home is for winners!
6) Trophies from games, to put in your space, like virtual versions of your actual trophies, perhaps just gold and above, but to put them in your apartment would rock. - Specially when you've got mate's round to watch something on your Home TV.
Come on Sony, sort it out, Home has such potential. For me TV's will make it instantly more appealing.
