In-game XMB will arrive someday, says Sony photo

Spent a little time with a PlayStation 3, only to find yourself suffering from Xbox Live withdrawal? Like many of us, you may enjoy the games that Sony has to offer, but the glaring lack of in-game XMB access is getting harder and harder to do without.

Up to this point, it has seemingly fallen on deaf ears, as several updates later, Sony has yet to integrate this much wanted feature into the PS3's arsenal. But stand steadfast, true believers. Sony has heard your cries, and they are taking your wants and needs into consideration -- so sayeth the PlayStation Network's director of operations, Eric Lempel:

"We are looking at a number of enhancements related to accessing some of the XMB features during gameplay, including messaging your friends. While there's no timeline to announce at this point, we've heard loud and clear from consumers that in-game XMB access is one of the most requested PS3 enhancements."

Still no timeline? Well at least they've confirmed that they are aware of our innermost PS3 desires. Just how much longer are you expecting us to wait, Sony?

You know what? I don't actually care about messaging people while I'm playing a game because I'm occupied playing the game. You can't pause anything online and if you're in a single player section, you have all the time in the world to quit. If it was urgent, someone would call my damn cellphone, not message me on my console. Would it be convenient? Hell yes. But really, listening to some people, you'd swear they start a game then spend all their time messaging instead of playing.

I'd rather they work on PSN download speeds. The gameplay is lag-free (and has been even when I mistakenly left bittorrent running) but the downloads are damn slow.

I'd love to have in game XMB access. It's been a pain in the ass when I get a message from someone asking for the Warhawk server password or asking a question and I could easily answer it during the game, yet I can't. I have to quit. Then answer it. Then start the game again. Usually, I don't quit in the first place, but still. If it's not hard to do, give us the option. Better to have options than nothing at all.

Also, King3vbo has the best idea ever. You win innernets sir.

Yeah, I agree with bhive. Just last night, I messaged a bunch of people to see if they wanted to play Warhawk. After getting no replies, I booted up Call of Duty 4 to go kill some terrorists. Lo and behold, as soon as I was about to hit “Find Game”, I got a reply, and I had to quit out of the game to the XMB just to read it. That’s a nuisance, and Sony needs to get their stuff together on that front.

@Woverine: I’m not sure if you’re joking, but in case you aren’t, the XMB is short for XrossMediaBar (pronounced “Cross Media Bar”) that is the standard graphical user interface in many Sony devices, including the PS3 and the PSP (as well as some of their high-end TVs). It’s the screen you see when your PS3 isn’t being used to play a game, listen to music, watch a video/movie, etc.

The Sony quote kinda comes off like this, "Sony hear's ya,but Sony don't care."

I have no source for this, but I've heard that the PS3 allocates half the amount of memory to the XMB during a game than the 360 does to the dashboard. If this is true, it would make a lot of sense why this hasn't been implemented yet. From a limitation standpoint, it's possible it will never be implemented. I'm getting more and more worried about it as time passes. In fact, Sony seems to be pushing Home instead of updates which allow the actual functionality that everyone is looking for.

My fingers are crossed for it, though!
