In all the Nintenlove, have we forgotten the Wii has issues too? photo

It's not just the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with the occasional system errors, no, it seems that Nintendo's beloved Wii is also prone to problems. Mine, for example, will freeze about 50% of the time when I switch games or applications. I've had minor Wiimote issues now and again, but nothing major. After looking at the list below compiled at NeoGAF, does anyone here at Destructoid want to add a problem log to the flame? Straight from the GAF:

  • 1. Credit cards: Again, as per PS3, only a credit card belonging to a country on the list available on your wii can be used. Having a european card means that no Wii points can be purchased. Check returns "Error : country doesn't match that in Wii settings" :(
  • 2. Freezing on VC exit (Amirox): System freezes 50% of the time when exiting VC channel.
  • 3. Slow Wii code exchange update (Tabris): Followin exchange of Wii codes, takes a long time before you can actually interact.
  • 4. VC game issue: Bomberman: Difficult to get mixed controllers (GC+Wii) working --- Borghe to the rescue! "press a button on the GCN controllers (L trigger or R trigger I thought) "
  • 5. Bluetooth controller problems (Mrbob): As per PS3 issue - controls get 'stuck' for a few seconds.
  • 6. Download and update -bricking- (lavpa): Some updates have bricked certain systems
  • 7. Lack of firmware on machine: Machine ships without firmware, requests update disk.
  • 8. Disk read failures (quailtamer): Won't read disks 1/10 times
  • 9. Lack of Nunchuck/Wiimotes (koam): Lack of stock despite push from nintendo of the wii as a family machine
  • 10. Sent message history (SS4Gogita): No send message history
  • 11. Wii sound output issues (Jarosh): often distorted sound output to 5.1 output system.
  • 12. Blue light not coming on (John Harker): Despite receiving mails, blue light doesn't come on.
  • 13. Mii channel/register freeze (John Harker): When not connected to 24, system freezes and forces power down.
  • 14. Lock up in wii store (hyp): Lock ups in the wii store whilst connecting
  • 15. Multiple wifi connection failuers (DCharlie/hyp): wifi connection fails, claims not connected.
  • 16. Wiiconnect24 not available (DCharlie/hyp): several messages about Wiiconnect24 not being available, then available seconds later.

Here's another one, my Wii controller speaker snap, crackles and pops. I tried turning the volume down but that didn't seem to fix it. Now the speaker is going out altogether. I bought a second controller and that one works fine.

I noticed that crackling too, but it went away after you repeat the sound. For instance, in Baseball, the first few swings are distorted and then it's fine after that. Almost like it loads the sound bite into the controller for replay, and when it's not there it plays really jerky low quality sound back.

I've only had my system lock up once, and it didn't like Animal Crossing the first time I put it in. I keep my discs in immaculate condition too (<--- anal). Other than that, I've not had any issues with the Wii or the controllers.

Nice box Summa.

All consoles have some issues at launch, it just depends to what degree they are experienced by the end users.

If its a larger percentage then we'd expect to hear more of it than if its less than 1% of consumers that are experiencing problems.

But I do agree, I think some flaws or issues have been glossed over by the overwhelming success

I don't get No. 1 at all - I live in Europe and I've used my card to buy Wii points on several occasions. Did this guy import his Wii? Then he should have known that it wouldn't connect to the European servers......

As for the other stuff - I've never seen most of those issues, either. The wifi problems might not have anything to do with the console. I've clocked up 200+ hours on my console, and it has only frozen on me once. It's been a lot more reliable than the 360 was when I first got it!

Lack of nunchucks? That's not really a failing of the system itself, is it? This list is just weird....

More like a lack of preparation on Ninty's part. If they were going to push it as a family system then the Wiimotes and Nunchucks should have been available in droves. I wish they had also managed to make different colors. I hate the fact that if I pick up the wrong controller I can turn the system on, but I have to find the #1 controller to do anything. Why not automagically set the first powered up controller to controller 1 and so on...?

Summa's seemingly capricious hatred for the Wii makes me ashamed to come from the same town.

I object to nothing in this particular post, I've not experienced the problems but I don't doubt people do... but seriously, is this like the 3rd straight Nintendo dis in a row?

At least take a detour on the road to Nintenfield, Hateslyvania. Post something good about the 360, DS or anything between you exacting vengence for the time your Virtual Boy gained sentience and murdered your family.

Replace "360" with "Wii" in my previous comment, for I am stupid.

Even though a lot of these are not actual problems with the Wii but rather personal complaints, I will certainly agree with one of them.

"10. Sent message history (SS4Gogita): No send message history"

This is poop. You should really have a "sent" folder or something.

But some of this stuff is just plain Silly.

"16. Wiiconnect24 not available (DCharlie/hyp): several messages about Wiiconnect24 not being available, then available seconds later."

Are you kidding me? Has this person never seen a busy internet server? He is probably the one who lodged the complaint that Amazons servers went down (all of them) during that $100 XBOX360 deal they had a month ago.

I've had mine freeze while leaving the Mii Plaza twice. That's it. No read errors or anything like that.

Oh, and the Opera browser crashed once and forced a reboot, but that's in beta so it's kinda bound to happen at least once. Annoying, but forgivable I think.

Freezing happens more than it should. I've can remember previous Nintendo systems freezing once or twice in their lifetime. With the Wii I've experienced 15+ complete freezes since launch. Its not life threatening but its unacceptable - especially from Nintendo.

Sent message history would be nice.

Also? WTF can't we play against our computer controlled mii's in Tennis? I've yet to even see them in the crowd and I'm pro. I want to get an ace on Jesus FFS.

With the exception of an occasional claim that it can't connect to the network, after which a second attempt will succeed, I have not experienced any problems with my Wii or the controllers. Of course, now that I've said that...

Sometime, the screen will say "System Files Corupted. Contact Nintendo at blah blah blah" but you just turn it off and then back on and it works fine.

Wow Shadow, that's some serious anger there. God forbid someone posts anything wrong about a Nintendo console. Shit, I've had an xbox 360 since launch and it's fine. That doesn't mean that there aren't problems with 'em.

I've had problems with the Wii. The controls just cut out every now and then. But I guess that's my fault and not the all mighty Nintendo.

Is this just a grocery list of problems people have had with their consoles or actual issues that we will all face one day? I don't get the point of this article.

I've had the wiimote speaker one playing rayman, the minigame where you need to hear the pig noise to know where the bunnies are hiding, maybe it was the game and not the controller.

The wiiconect not available, i've had that, it disconnects sometimes when im downloading things, but doesn't reconnect by itself. I need to turn on the console and do the whole internet connection thing again.

While my Wii is working great, my buddys is a brick out of box. Another buddys Wiimote will not sync with his system. Works will all others but wont main sync to his, very strange. I am waiting for a patch that will make Zelda as fun as everyone promised me it would be.

You know what we should do, we should make a list of problems that people all around the world are having with one system that we dislike, then post the problems. Because that's journalism.

nonstop connection errors, was such a pain in the ass to get th eweather and opera beta updates ... next update ill prolly just skip... 360 and ps3 use same wifi connection and have had 0 problems (the 360 and wii get used nonstop online with no issues @ same connection)

hopefully they fix it before they try to have real online games otherwise will be a disaster

Proof that Summa sucks. I thought he was a writer? Someone must have spelt it wrong and put in hater instead. He qualifies greatly! As soon as I see a Summa post, I know there's a big chance it won't be about something awesome one of the three companies does, but about how much Nintendo are shit personified. Time to move on to a post by a real games journalist.

what a lame excuse for an "article"

FYI to anyone that has connection errors with shop channel/updates/24/etc... changing your wireless router to channel 1 or 11 (as per nintendo's support site) will eliminate the connection problems in almost all cases.

it pays to use your head and not just whine all day long.

Had the shop channel connection crash, had wiiconnect24 problem once, couple of system erros, and 2 times a wiimote lost accelerometer function on me until I switched games.
