In addition to MS points, Mass Effect DLC to cost a couple hours of gameplay photo

Even though Mass Effect doesn't actually contain any full-on nudity or graphic displays of sexuality, we still like it. So when the "Bring Down the Sky" downloadable content pack was announced, we were thrilled to continue our adventures. Set for release on March 10, the pack will contain an additional 90 minutes worth of gameplay. Cool beans.

For those who have already played through Mass Effect, though, now might be a good time to start playing again. BioWare's Ray Muzyka has confirmed to MTV's Steven Totilo that players wlil have to [spoiler alert!?] play past the game's opening Eden Prime and Citadel sequences to access the new DLC. Once you unlock the game's galactic map, the new missions will appear. In short, you're going to have to sit through a few hours worth of gameplay before you can get to the new, juicy stuff.

So is this a huge deal? Considering the scope and style of Mass Effect, it's hard to imagine them doing this any other way. Bethesda Softworks had a different approach with their Oblivion DLC (once downloaded, it was usually simply a matter of "finding" that new content in the game's world), but that game works a bit differently with its open world.

Is something like this going to turn you off from picking up the DLC? Or will you veteran Mass Effect players happily work through the game's opening hours to check out your new content?

Not a big deal. If you don't do all the sidequests at the Citadel, I don't think this would take that long. It's probably good to have a gamesave going that you'll use for DLC as its released...

Not really a big deal for me. I still need to finish the game for the 1st time...

What about future DLC? This sounds pretty shoddy.

Eden prime and the citadel can take you half an hour or less if you know what your doing.

Im just glad I have a reason to start the adept class now.

I've been steadily playing ME since day one, I'm on my third play through this time. Still trying to get the Completionist and Ally achievements so as long as I can get to the DLC from my save then there won't be a problem.

Fuck Fox News Channel!

I started over again with my character anyways, but moved on shortly after. This'll give me reason to dive in again, maybe beat once more. It'll be easy since I won't feel compelled to go through all the side stuff again...

Will it involve driving a brick through featureless landscapes and occasionally getting out to shout a couple people in an ewok land rover that looks the same as the last one? In the future the ewoks seem to have 100% market share of the land rover market.

Don't own the game yet (still too busy playing Rogue Galaxy), but I'll probably get it in six or so months and by then I'm hoping to have some good content extras to add on to it right out of the case.

It doesn't bother me. I'm actually going through the second play through. I'll stop and wait for the DLC and for people to review it. If it's going to be more planet's with two dudes and one base in them then I'll pass.

I can see how this can be sort of annoying, but like someone else said, if you skip the beginning side quests than it probably is around an hour play.

I haven't gone through this game once yet. I'm probably 3 hours in so I'll just wait for the DLC before I play again.

You can do Eden Prime and the Citadel in about an hour-hour and a half if you proper speedrun it. Anyway it doesn't matter, I have plenty of save files at the right time and different classes too. It's reasonable when you look at how the game is designed.

I still need to complete it on Insanity.

I always keep a save before the point of no return, so I shouldn't actually need to replay anything should I decide to purchase this. That said, I do actually have a second character who's just finished the citadel anyway.

This is discouraging for the sequel in that it shows they seem to be primarily unable to integrate or support pre-existing characters from other playthroughs.

And the DLC gets inserted into a portion of the middle of the game? This smacks of withheld story lines from the original game, and kind of hokey. DLC should be a continuation where we left off, not some side quest that just gets haphazardly grafted into the old game.

I'm sure I'll need another playthrough by then, so I don't see this to be a big deal. Still, as the guy above me says, I was kind of hoping the DLC would be small stories inserted between the first and second games.

I'd rather have DLC that unlocks part of the map of ME2 too. I want to see what happens after ME1 more than I want to know what could've happened in ME1. If they made you go past the first game, they could then revisit those planets in ME2 when more time has passed; they wouldn't have to redesign all the maps in ME2, just make the DLC maps look a bit more aged. And it would be cool to actually play in the ME2 world before it's out.

Then again, screw all that and give us Korriban/Kashyyyk DLC instead!

I have barely even played this game yet, so i'm nowhere near to completion, therefore I have no problem with the DLC...except it costs money. I am proud to say I have never purchased MS points.

I got the 360 on release day too, i've just never seen ANYTHING that would result in me buying points, well Rez if I didn't have it on DC or Puzzle Quest if I didn't have it on PSP I suppose would be exceptions.

Meh, whatever. Though I'm hoping the mission is better than "Drive around this desert planet to three predetermined locations and fight the bad guys there."

You don't have to complete all Citadel Quests and can become a spector in fairly short order. I am going to check but I don't think it is anywhere near a couple hours of gameplay. This is a non issue

Yep, surely most people already have a save file somewhere in the main story beyond the opening couple of hours, and for anyone that's finished it already replaying Eden Prime and the initial Citadel bit are a negligible chunk of time.

I have mixed feelings on this. I loved Eden Prime, but found the Citadel incredibly slow and boring!

The side missions in ME were the worst part of the game. If this mission is anything like the ones in the game, I've already played it 30 times.

Even if it was free I wouldn't download it. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how people thought the game had a good story. :p

This sounds really, really lazy to me. This DLC is stuff that's primarily meant for people who have went through all of the original content and are looking for more. Having them play through the beginning again? Balls. I don't know if I feel like doing that again just to play 90 minutes worth of new stuff. I'm sure they have a dozen reasons why they have to do it this way, but it's still shitty.

hmmm i havent played ME yet but i think now im just gunna wait to see what the consensus is about the DLC if its good ill go buy the game and content and play it like that.

on a side note if i had already played the game chances are i wouldnt care about this just because i usually hate going thru RPG'S twice extra content or not.once its beaten its beaten....minus chrono trigger.

Couldn't you just load up a save game (perhaps, not 30 seconds before the end) and just go access it?

Sounds to me that they don't mean you have to start a full new game to access it, simply that you must be able to travel of your own accord... which happens after the Citadel.

Honestly, if anyone has a problem with that... you suck.

No issue at all. This is one of the few games I can see myself playing through 3 or 4 times, easily. I am on my second playthrough now, on Hardcore. Customising your new character is awesome, and I want all the achievements ;)

This is a non issue period. Mass Effect was designed to be played multiple times and becoming a specter takes barely any time at all.

@Eschatos: Oblivion is not a trilogy first off, and second its an open world game , unlike ME.

I work for Bioware and I worked on this DLC.

You can access the DLC by loading any save game where you have control of the Normandy.

Creating a new game and advancing past the citadel is not required, it's a remedy if you don't have such a save available.

Can't wait to see future DLC for Mass Effect.
