Future!
Christian Whitehead remembers when Sonic was good. I'm guessing that he's with me on the feeling that Sonic CD was the game series' highpoint. Why else would he be busting his ass to port the Sega CD game to the iPhone.
It may sound like a crazy idea, but his concept demonstration shows that this could be great. Check out the video on that page -- it looks solid. He credits his own Retro Engine, which he says allows him to create 2D games "in a fraction of the time it would take to start from scratch." The proof? He says that this Sonic CD concept only took a month to put together, and that's without using the original title's source code.
If you're interested in the release of Sonic CD for iPhone, Whitehead is asking that you let Sega know. Sega, if you're listening, know that this is an official request. Also, Shining Force.
[thanks, Tim]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Now all I need is a iPhone/iPod Touch...
Ah, what do I really care. I don't have an Iphone or an Ipod Touch.

Sega needs to greenlight this, to make amends for the embarrassing ports of the first Sonic to the iPhone and GBA.
On the flipside, this heavily dampens my hopes of Sonic Nexus, that sweet fangame whose team Christian's on, getting finished. I'm officially changing my bets to Team Plays the "Real-Life Commitments" Card and Weasels Out of Finishing.
1.) Sega would never allow this.
2.) I honestly don't believe this hasn't been reverse-engineered in some way. Some of the best Sonic hacks have been RE'd or whatnot, but this guy claims to have been able to make this proof of concept in the stretch of a month? Why aren't companies hiring him if he's so talented? The fact that it looks identical to the real thing makes me wonder.
3.) And honestly, virtual pad controls on the iTouch suck. Apart from the fact it obscures the screen, there's no feedback either. I'm not a fan of it, but thankfully it's not accelerometer-controlled.
*skeptical*
It's better for them to only pay the "porting tax" once if the hardware can support emulation.
There's a remote possibility Sony will look at this and see an opportunity for cheap labor here, but that is very unlikely. The more likely action is a C&D and a suit for damages in the form of whatever profits might result from the use of Sega's IP to sell his product.
I thought he was selling this concept to Sega as a means of having a not shit port of Sonic CD
Well, as close to "port" as you can get when your basicly making the game from the ground up again.
Also, Sega noticed it, it's going to be mentioned in a brainstorming meeting: http://twitter.com/SEGA/status/2892372715
Right, but he had to do illegal things to get it running, and he wasn't hired by Sega, so it's in their hands how to interpret it.
I hardly think this man is in any danger of having a lawsuit filed against him.
