Impressions: Time Crisis: Razing Storm on PS Move photo

Light gun games haven't quite gone the way of the dodo, but I've generally considered them to only be worth playing for a few minutes at an arcade (before I get tired of them). But with the launch of PlayStation Move this September, they may be poised for a comeback. Namco Bandai is doing their part, packaging ports of the arcade versions of three light gun games -- Time Crisis: Razing Storm, Time Crisis 4 (2007), and Deadstorm Pirates -- and releasing the bundle as Time Crisis: Razing Storm in North America this fall.

I got to check out Razing Storm on Move at a Sony press event in New York last week. I played by myself for a while, and then tried out same-screen co-op with a Namco Bandai representative. I can confirm that it is an on-rails light gun game where you shoot many, many people and robots. But I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it, and I think that the amount of fun I had was tied to PlayStation Move.

1

If you're not pressing any buttons, you'll be behind an impenetrable metal shield. Holding the Move button will have you pop out from behind the shield, ready to fire with the trigger. Instead of "firing" off the screen to reload, you'll automatically do so when you re-enter cover. Razing Storm is the first Time Crisis game with destructible environments, and while it isn't exactly Red Faction: Guerrilla-level destructibility, it's still fun to take out some scaffolding and watch the enemies who were standing on it collapse in a heap on the floor. A second player can hop in at any time, and that brings in the wonderful cooperative-yet-competitive element of "my friend and I are kicking ass together, but I'm going to kick more ass than him."

Move matters here because of its accuracy, the benefits of which were palpable. I've often found the targeting in light gun games to be finicky, but I had no trouble racking up headshots in Razing Storm. That was Arcade Mode, but Razing Storm also includes a single-player Story Mode that plays like an FPS -- you have freedom of movement around the stages. Here, you'll play with the Move Navigation Controller in your left hand and the wand in your right; flicking the wand upward (i.e., away from the screen) will put you into cover. (I didn't get a chance to see the Story Mode.) You'll also use the FPS controls in the eight-player Online Battle Mode, which features shooter standards such as deathmatch.

2

All three games in the bundle will be playable with PlayStation Move (and the optional Move Shooting Attachment), the Guncon 3 (which came with the PS3 version of Time Crisis 4), or a regular PlayStation 3 controller. Time Crisis 4 and Deadstorm Pirates will feature online leaderboards, although I presume you'll be stuck with using your PSN name instead of a clever arcade-cabinet standby such as "ASS" or "FUK." Pricing is yet to be determined, but the bundle will be available right around the launch of PlayStation Move. Depending on the cost, it could be worth picking up for some mindless shooting fun.

They'll need to do better than that to get me on board with the Move. Once Sony gives me a piece of software that makes the initial investment worth it, then perhaps we can talk about games like these, which are really only good for mindless fun for an hour or two at a time.

But first they'll have to get me interested in Move. Not happening so far.

Hey, this is sports!

Just kidding. Kind of. Nice write up. Sounds solid, but still not quite sold on Move. Glad to hear it supports GunCon.

This certainly doesn't justify the moves existence. I'd rather have a lightgun that has, y'know sights 'n shit.

I kinda wonder if the comments would be similar if this trilogy came out for the Wii, a system that is perfect for light gun games. regardless of that, I will be getting this, maybe with move or maybe finally get TC4 for the guncon controller.

Unprecision is the Wii's most inforgivable faults that make it the baddest system around.

I was totally asleep until you described the free roam mode, at which point I became instantly awake and began to stroke my stubbly chin.

Three for one? Now I want.

Shame that it won't likely have GunCon 3 support since I was hoping that either Crisis Zone or this would find its way to it.

@The-Excel: Please read the last paragraph of my article. (Notice that I didn't say "re-read," since you obviously didn't read it the first time through.)

Oh snap, son! You just got tolds!

I'll definitely be getting this game. First Move-capible game I'll be getting, but seeing as I already have two Guncon 3s, I might skip the Move itself until something else comes along.

@Netnavi:

The Wii seems like it should be perfect for light gun games, but it isn't...it's actually far from it. To enjoy a light gun game, you need to be able to aim at the screen and trust that what you think you are going to shoot, you are going to shoot...sadly, the Wiimote and sensorbar just can't do it justice. The Guncon3 is basically the same concept as the wiimote, but is MUCH better and closer to an arcade experience. I'm not sure exactly why that is, but I suspect it's due to the IR emitters are able to be further apart from each other, and thus tolerates the gun better from different angles.

Lightgun games are why I'd get the Move...I really hope that SEGA follows suit, and if so, I'm down for at least two sets of controls and a gun attachment (although, would just prefer a real light gun configured to suit the Moves system.

This game pack is the closest thing I've seen thus far to making me want to get the Move.

This sounds awesome! This + Socom + Killzone + The Fight + LBP2 + Even Sports champions looks pretty cool.

Move, I'm so fucking in. I'm gonna pre-order.

@ Monkey News - Why not?

It will be a nice break from all the AAA core-games coming out to play a bit of table tennis, or a bit of sword fighting, or archery, or volley ball or whatever amongst all the shooting.

Also, we all have friends and family (well, most of us) so when they come round, or when mrs SC wants to play, I'm pretty sure they're not going to want to play Socom, but Sports Champions - that's for everyone!

It's like one Natal/Wii style game in amongst all the other awesome looking games really can't hurt.

What would suck, is if move was packed with load casual games, an on rails Star Wars game, and a dancing game and that was it.... wait? What?

Thank god for Guncon 3 support.

A stupid remote in a plastic shell is not a substitute for a real lightgun. I'm glad Namco realized that, for those of us who prefer our lightgun games to have...y'know...lightguns.

True, but i just dont want this one game to introduce a wave of shovelware. No matter how much sony say they will stop erm.....games such as 'carnival games' being released on ps3, if they prove to be popular and generate a fair revenue then they are not going to handle it well. Dont get me wrong, when i had a wii playing golf etc agaisnt friends was good fun, but sort of lost its fun value after a few hours. Especially with the wii's super accurate tracking system.
