Impressions: The Witcher 2 photo

The Witcher was a highly ambitious RPG and one which achieved considerable praise upon release. Praised for its deep storyline with morally gray decisions guiding the player, most everyone I know who has played the game enjoyed it considerably. Now, armed with a new engine and the promise that the game will actually make it to consoles this time, The Witcher 2 looks to be an even stronger offering.

CD Projekt has revamped the way combat works in the game. Combos are no longer constrained by a timing system as it was the first go round, opening up freedom to the player. Attacks now chain together easily and can even incorporate magic. Also added is an option to put the blades away and engage in bare-knuckle brawling for those times when kiling an opponent might not be the best idea.

As a genre, RPGs should be all about the story and have traditionally been attractive to players who might lack some of the skills needed for action games. If you're the sort who is likely to stumble your way through every combat encounter, an easier combat mode has been added just for you. I'm not really one of those people and this feature appeals even to me. Sometimes, I just want to know what the story of a game is and it's nice to see game design which can cater to that if I so choose.

The dialog system from the original title, with time restrictions in certain conversations that force you to make a choice quickly, returns. CD Projekt promises ambiguous choices will still be a big part of the game and that consequences for decisions will be felt long after they are made.

The most impressive thing I took away from the gameplay demonstration came from seeing a boss encounter set at the end of the game's first act. In a forest, the party encounters a monster called a "Tentadrake." It looked like a huge, armored beetle with tentacles and a round, toothy maw and is one of the last things I'd want to encounter on a lazy forest stroll.

The battle with the Tentadrake showed a combination of the game's standard combat and QTE elements, not unlike a boss fight in a God of War title. What set the fight apart were the multiple methods of dispatching the beast. Instead of getting the same canned conclusion from certain fights, you might be able to discover a less straighforward means of victory and your success will be rewarded with a different conclusion. Brilliant.

Even in this alpha stage, The Witcher 2 shows immense promise. The new engine looks great and the refined gameplay mechanics are exciting. PC RPG fans, it's time to start getting excited.

The first did a lot right in terms of story and creating a world to play in. My two big gripes though from the first were that I always felt like I was kind of floating a little bit while running around and I thought the companion protection quests where a little too tough (due to crummy AI and low hit points for your pals).

This looks really awesome, but I hate that the devs are being all noncommittal with regards to a console release now. It sounds like, if we get one, it will come at a later date than the PC release, and we all know how that worked out for the first game.

Loved the first one to hell, even though it was a little "floaty", as RichardBlaine said. Great choice of words, specially given that I'd extend the term to pretty much every aspect of the game.

Wonderful ideas, wonderful application of such ideas, but everything felt somewhat disconnected, "FLOATY", like things would sometimes connect and revert to the stage of air juggling of concepts.

I really wanted to play the first one, but didn't have a gaming-ready PC. I'm looking forward to this quite a bit.

I never could get into the first one. I tried 3 different times but I just found it somewhat silly and eventually boring. Oh well, I'd still give the second one a shot.

Hopefully this game won't take place in 1 littel town called vizima making you travl to the swamp to give some people a random amount of wolf pelts to prgress through some parts of the game, some o the quests were soooo tedious in the game.

Just finished the first not too long ago and I was amazed that it didn't get more publicity than it did. Since this one is guaranteed to release on console, hopefully CD Projekt will get their propers this time around.

When it first came it it Witcher 1 had Crysis-style problems, not supporting lower-spec PCs well enough. Hope this either sees a console release, or better PC support for slower rigs.

Or maybe they could do both versions from scratch(which means no ports), at the same time or not, and completely unrelated to each other from a programming POV, so anyone shouldn't worry about "MY PLATFORM IS SUPERIORZ!". I would also like to point out that if you're using a bad engine on a superior platform, the bad platform with a good engine might win. Choosing the right platform certainly isn't everything.

Also, "Well, that's what it feels like playing a 360/PS3 game ported to PC lol." HOORAY for generalizing! lol, yes!

To close it: "Imagine they did a Wii game, then ported it to 360/PS3. It would be disappointing, because it wouldn't take advantage of your system's hardware."
It's a pity No More Heroes HD didn't leave Japan, denying you the chance to realize how wrong your own words are.

Strangely, I just bought the enhanced edition of the first game YESTERDAY. I can't wait to play it--I'm waiting for my computer to get back.

This will blow away anything Bioware has done... dunno if console players will be interested though. Last one sold well over a million on PC though, so it's got an audience there at least.

could not play the first due to DREADFUL translation!

Hopefully this one will get some decent voice work in it. So shit makes sense.

Otherwise yeah I could do with a great RPG. But anyone saying this will beat anything bioware has ever made is being a bit hopefull... (although gameplay wise that aint hard!)

The Witcher is so awesome. Hopefully this will be better. The first one sold over a million based mostly on word of mouth and a lot of good will on the developers side (enhanced edition upgrade for free!). I hope they keep this mindset.

Unfortunately (well for non-pc'ers), I believe I have read that they are completely focused on creating a great game on PC and will focus on the port afterwards.

I'm extremely excited about this. I didn't think I'd enjoy the original nearly as much as I did. I am thankful I played it after the bugs were fixed though. Damn good and bloody engrossing game. One of the best RPG's in years.

Seriously looking forward to this. Witcher I never played, never got around to it... and a few things about it's design I heard were not so great. I'm glad they are doing a sequal, and assuming it's as good as it sounds I'll probably jump right on this.

@BrunoDeckard so im guessing you wouldnt mind if all the multiplatform games were native to the Wii then, and they would have to work within its limitations and the be ported over to the 360/ps3?http://www.destructoid.com/elephant/images/comment-button.gif

Game looks totally sweet. I hope it makes its way to console because RPGs are starting to dry up on the consoles. They are there but in less quantity compared to the earlier years of their lives.

Get the Enhanced Edition, the translation is much better in it and dialogues make a lot more sense.

Also this is looks amazing. I loved everything about The Witcher and it looks like I will love the sequel too.
