Impressions: Intense co-op action with Ghost Recon photo

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is going for a different and unique approach on the Wii. Hardcore fans of the franchise will be able to get into the game and it will be able to accommodate new casual fans that have never touched a Ghost Recon game before too.

What's really interesting about the Wii version is how it's able to put two players in third-person perspective on one screen at all times. You wouldn't think it, but the unique view actually seems to work really well.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon (Wii)
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
To be released: November 2010

Think of this Ghost Recon as an advanced on-rails shooter. There's one set path but you'll have control over when you can advance forward from cover-to-cover. You can run between cover points, but it will mean your shots will be scattered. You can also walk for more precision shots but you'll be more vulnerable.

The big thing with this Ghost Recon is the big emphasis on teamwork. You'll always have a partner, whether it be the AI or a friend who can drop in or out at any time. On one of the levels I saw, snipers were hiding in various buildings while soldiers were pouring into the streets. One player needs to focus on the ground soldiers while the other uses his sniper rifle to take out the enemy snipers. Communication is key in these scenarios. If both players focused on the soldiers on the ground, then the snipers would have killed off both players in no time.

Sadly, there is no online co-op. Communication is important and playing online probably wouldn't strike up the same feeling the developers are hoping players get when working next to each other. The only online feature will be the leaderboards tied to the arcade mode.

Arcade mode takes place through the same levels as in campaign, but you'll be gunning for as many points as possible. Campaign follows Ghost soldiers Hibbard and Booth, a two-man team separated from their squad in the streets of Moscow. The story is about eight hours long spanning 12 missions.

From what I saw of the new Ghost Recon, it looks pretty great. I can't comment on the controls as I didn't get any hands-on time, but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more. Check out the debut trailer to see how Ghost Recon looks on the Wii.

This seems kind of dumb. If it's an on-rails shooter, why even have characters on the screen?

@SayWord Already been done!! Say "Hi!" to The Punisher for NES and Wild Guns for SNES.
Anyone that thinks this game will not get boring after 10 minutes is in for a rude awakening. The only "done right" on rails shooter for Wii is still Dead Space: extraction

Sounds like the perfect weekend rental.

So basically, this is gonna be Time Crisis with on-screen avatars. That's not a bad thing at all. Adding cover mechanics to a rail shooter is more than welcome in my house. Though 12 missions seem a little short and I wish they would've added DLC support to add to the tail of this game. I'll keep an eye on this.

Listen: abandon all hope. It will be baaad. We´ve been there before.

The whole "well, it´s not a watered down version of the full HD game, its a different game altogether and will probably be a great experience"

No. It wont. It will be a terrible experience. It will be like that depressing Transformers wii game. It isnt worth of a single rental rental.
Luckly we have a lot of promissing FPS for the wii at this years end.

"Sounds like the perfect weekend rental."

That's pretty much how I felt.

I just don't see a lot of replayability in on-rails shooters. I mean, I'm about the biggest Dead Space nerd in the world, and I've never felt better about renting vs buying than I did with Extraction...

Umm... another "proper HD game" gets a "Wii spin off" that is "on rails" yet nobody, not even dtoid utters the words "on rails" because Ubisoft puts a spin on it calling it "unique" and "innovative" because there are a couple branching paths you can point your dudes toward? Wow... This will hopefully sell 10 copies worldwide to give them the finger they give the Wii audience. Same developer as the Wii Transformers game too, which was also an "on rails" shooter unlike the HD games.

Ok, nevermind, dtoid did mention "on rails" but sugar coats it calling it "advanced" because of cover (Time Crisis hello?) or other minor things that don't do much for gameplay. By the by, the PSP gets a proper GRAW-like game with all the tactical goodness intact. Granted, it'll probably suck, but at least they tried.

Damn, on-rails... Maybe worth a rent at best.

Didn't any developer learn anything from Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition?

Meh, I doubt the developers "intend" to auteur a feeling between two players side-by-side that can't be experienced from afar. They just want to shorten development time and the Wii doesn't have the online attachment rate that would make many give notice of an online mode.
