Images and video: THQ's Conan (PS3/360)

If THQ's next-gen action title, Conan, has one thing going for it, it's the fact that it's retarded bloody. Also, after looking at this video, it's hard not to compare it to God of War; that's good company to be in.

Strike one? Unfortunately, the next-gen title manages to not look as good as God of War. Is it me or does Conan's face look like a slab of handled, raw beef? Still, looks aren't everything; and if the gameplay is solid, we could have a winner on our hands.

Strike two? The game is being developed by Nihilistic Software, whose only console projects have been the ill-fated Starcraft: Ghost and the terror on a DVD-ROM known as Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects.

While I'm sure you guys will think of strike three (and four through twenty) in the comments, I'm still going to give Conan a chance when it comes to the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 in 2008. As long as I don't accidentally pick up the Funcom PC/360 MMORPG, Age of Conan, by mistake. Because, you know, that's not confusing at all.

step 1- replace chain blades with swords
step 2- obtain recognizable license
step 3- profit!

Looks pretty cool. A LOT like God of War but that's not necessarily a bad thing. From what I read of the GI article it sounds like there'll be a lot of variety in combat (more-so than God of War actually).

Wait.....they made Marvel Nemesis? Then Fuckem!

looks like a solid game from THQ..

nothing as great as god of war or devil may cry... but still looks like it could be a solid action game and i will definitely play it all the way through (most likely).

The camera looks like it would piss me off something awful, and the AI might need some work, but theres still time to fix it, I suppose.

Some of the character animation looks really good (the enemy flailing at his neck after being decapitated comes to mind) but other times it looks stiff, like when Conan runs. The part with the giant octopus looks so much like God of War's Hydra battle it's ridiculous. Still, the game looks like it has the potential to be pretty good. Hopefully it will distance itself a bit more from God of War.

Seems weird to have Conan without Arnold's face. The Kraken battle looked like a lamer version of the Hydra battle in God of War. That and the combat looked really slow. Hopefully this isn't the final build. My final verdict: unimpressed.

Well, they stayed true to what the original Conan was drawn like. It wasn't pretty and neither is this rendering.

Uhhh...Conan as a character has been around since WAY before Arnold ever played him. He was created in the early 1900's and is supposed to be an ugly piece of fuck. This actually looks more like he's supposed to look as described in the stories and drawn in the comics. He IS a barbarian after all, no?

I'm glad to see my fave savage gettin' some lovin' these days. This Motherfucker was the greatest AND one of the earliest fantasy characters, predating Lord of the Rings by about 15-20 years...

plus...it's so bloody....bloooodddyyyy....

God of War style games are the new sidescrolling beat-em-up.

I'm a Conan geek, so no matter how generic this turns out, I'm sold. Anyone remember the Savage Sword of Conan comics? This game's look reminds me a bit of the Ernie Chan art style.

Idunno.

It just looks incredibly blah to me.

First off, the combat looks INCREDIBLY slow. Conan needs to wind up on EVERY hit he does. And Conan's movement just looks well, LESS than smooth.

Second, the collision detection is crap. I mean, guys are teleporting to be thrown, being hit when they're not ACTUALLY being hit and vice versa.

Third, the sound is aweful. I mean, how many times do we need to hear the EXACT same *SPLOTCH* sound, even when fighting different enemies? It honestly sounds like some bad playstation 1 game.

Last, did anyone see that the burning baricade just *POOFED* out of existence after burning for a while? What the heck was that? It didn't even fade out, it was just gone.

Next-gen indeed.

Mmm, Frank Frazetta-licious. I want this to be awesome, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed this game will be getting a good deal more polish, especially the sound effects. And I'm really glad they're going with the 60's Conan look instead of making him an Arnold clone.

You know, this is getting ridiculous. A sandbox game? It must be a GTA clone. An action fighting game? It must be a God of War clone. Neither of those games invented those genres. Maybe I'll start calling FPSs Doom clones, that makes as much sense.

@ Matthew Mac:

Actually, we used to call most FPSs that back in the day. It's a simple way to relate to others how a game plays and feels. And while GTA or God of War weren't the first games to do what they do, they're among the best in their genre. If a particular game is successful, other developers are going to borrow from it. Not only because they probably loved the previous title, but because they want to capture some of it's success also. Just because a game is a "clone" doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing.

Oh, thats totally understandable, but most people (over)use terms like 'GTA clone' as a derogatory term. Its like there's only one game allowed to be in a genre or something. Of course, its usually fanboys of a particular game that say all the 'imitators' suck, so that should say something right there, I suppose.
