Ikaruga LOL: Top scoring player on Live hates Xbox 360 port photo

Ikaruga frightens me. I tried to play it once and it smacked me and told me I am terrible at videogames and also not a very good human being. Other people make Ikaruga bow down to them, and I envy their majesty. One such champion has not only bent the XBLA version of Ikaruga to his almighty will, he has also verbally humiliated it, pouring salt into its shmuppy wound. See, he absolutely detests the Xbox Live Arcade port, despite becoming the top scorer on its leaderboard.

"The XBLA version of Ikaruga is a horrible port," states Kingoro58k on his gamertag bio. "This isn't Ikaruga, this is Ikaruga LOL."

Kingoro58k is offended by the number of changes found in the XBLA version versus the Dreamcast version, such as different enemy placement and the mirroring of certain elements so everything's backwards. Our resident Ikarugauthority, Topher "Mothershmupper" Cantler, considers the game a worthy port, and wasn't nearly as upset by the changes as this particularly peeved gamer.

What do you think? A case of a purist completely over-reacting because he's a knobhead, or is this port indeed worthy of the subtitle LOL, whatever he actually means by that?

The kid obviously knows enough about the game to criticize. I'll take his side. Though I'll never play it.

They seem like pretty trivial things to me..but I'm not a pro-Ikaruga player.

The mirroring of that part just sounds like they are trying to give something to challenge the better players and old hats at the game a little bit, i don't know anything about the changes in enemy placement though that could be a major foul up

They obviously made the changes to give old players a slightly different challenge. But what they could've done was just make 2 different play modes: Original and Arranged.

Two play modes, might have pushed it over the file size limit for XBLA.

BTW Why is this a news story? One guy doesnt like ikaruga port, so lets blog it on kotaku and dtoid. They changed like 3 tiny parts in the game, this guy had his shit memorized to a T and is now whining because he died once or twice.

Doesnt every player think a game should be changed in a certain way? We are lucky to have this game come out for 10 bucks without having to go look for it at gay-mstop or ebay.

I have never played the DC version, but this game absolutly rocks! It is a challenge that I have never encountered in a shmup. I love to get my ass completely kicked at this game, and then pick myself back up and try, try again.

Complaining just for attention? Maybe. I find it rather amusing that he complains about a game that he is the best at. That would be like the winning quarterback of the superbowl giving a big middle finger to the NFL, or for you european folks, the winning team of the World Cup giving a big middle finger to all of soccer.

The fuck man, enjoy being the best at something before opening up your cakehole and letting out a word grenade.

I dunno what he's bitching about. He bought the damn game and should've known something was gonna be changed.

Either way, people like this make me LAWL. they play, bitch and moan, then continue playing it as they make some BS exscuse on why they continue to play that version.

but either way, I don't mind the changes. it's not like the game was raped entirely. Me being the fighting game buff I am, changes are a great thing. You think you know everything until you find out something isn't the same.

How would two play modes push it over the MS file size limit saysay? The game was 48MBs. a slightly tweaked enemy pattern isn't gonna take up 100MBs+.

Also the guy moaning is a knobhead for sure. Treasure love tweaking their games to mess with the hardcore. That's why they make games so tough to beging with. To make it so the hardcore have to get really obsessed to get good at the game. A little tweak like this is their way of saying "oh wait, you didn't expect that did you?"

I don't know. I don't have this same Ikaruga passion that he and Topher seem to have, but I think I'd appreciate a curve ball in a port if I have such a thorough connection to a game that I own and have access to readily. It allows it to be this living experience. Plus, knowing that there's this subset of people that are passionate and actively perfecting their scores, in the spirit of competition, I think its good to allow relative newbies to have a chance to be competitve on the leaderboards. Since the leaderboard insists on existing.

But, if you're someone looking to have copy of the same exact game just permuted onto your currently plugged in and active game system, I can kind of see that being an issue.

Either way, it feels like a nitpick to the overall experience.

Not to mention, if he doesn't like it, he can just plug in his fucking dreamcast or gamecube and play it on there. I know that I was NOT happy with the port of Contra on live, but if I really wanted to play Contra the way I wanted, I would just plug in my NES and play some goddamn Contra. Half the time I just play the inferior live version because it's less of a pain in the ass than blowing on a cartridge for twenty minutes.

Yeah, I kind of agree. Knobheads don't necessarily need more attention on the internet. But it does make for good discussion/ fake controversy, since it goes slam against what one would expect from a top ranked player.

I'll echo the popular sentiment. If I were an Ikaruga master, I'd like for things to be slightly different, because then I'd get to go through learning how best to play it all over again. If it were the exact same game, I'd just play it like I have been for the past ten years, collect my Gamerscore, and then move on without experiencing anything new.

I cna't see how the changes should really bother anyone, if they want the dreamcast version go play the dreamcast version. So they changed a few little things so that the bat-shit insane hardcore would have to slightly alter their strategy, is that really such a big deal? A few weeks from now they will have all adapted and be back to hitting their ususal scores.

All the game asked for was a little effort.

I agree with calpis, and they should have put in an original game mode and the remix/mirrored version. I've had a Dreamcast and never knew of Ikaruga 'til a few years ago (since before the xbla ver.) I wanted to import it and all..... Anyway, I'm glad to get to play it, glad it is ported despite the small changes, pure or not.. Sometimes, I wish Nintendo would 'finally' release Donkey Kong in its 'pure' arcade form, (w/the Concrete Factory lvl.) Even then, the Japan release has diff level seq., etc. SU-JPG lul

Something like that

I can kinda see where he's coming from, as he's invested a lot of time into it but (and if I'm completely incorrect please let me know) but didn't Treasure help port and publish the game? I would feel that since they made the game, they should be allowed to make changes to it.

I guess I am a knobhead too, because I completely understand where this guy is coming from. I'd be irritated if a port of a game I absolutely loved was altered in a way that affects game play. Are you telling me no one would have any complaints if the upcoming port of Soul Calibre has changed the movements required for some of the specicial moves? I mean, if you learned them once and mastered a character, you can do it again.
