IGN said Wii Bowling took skill, these dudes say no

6:52 PM on 12.05.2006, World Famous 44 comments

     wii

IGN, video game wasteland, says Wii Bowling takes true skill only a bowling master can comprehend. However, they have been proven wrong. Not by pros, no, but regular Joes stoned out of their mind with babies and cats crawling all over the place. Now, once and for all, we see the true potential of this legendary game.

Um, so you can tell this is satire, right? The wireless on the Wiimote wouldn't make it to the store. If they had video of somebody continuously getting strikes it would mean something, but they've got video that cut before and after each strike.

Regardless, I can imagine that if you got the motion down, you could hit strikes consistently. I definitely get more strikes in Wii Bowling than in real life bowling, but not much more.

I, too, can film videos of strikes, and add them to completely different shots of me swinging the Wiimote around at random locations all over town.

Seriously, my only questions were "how many takes that didn't result in strikes did we not get to see?" and "at what point did you actually start just adding canned footage of a strike?" (I fear for anyone who thinks every shot was real.)

It was still good for a laugh, but "EG 1, IGN 0" it ain't.

Well of course some of it is fake, but still its pretty darn easy to get strikes. I can probably say the other half of the video was true.

These guys are the hosts of "Epileptic Gaming" which is a podcast turned video show that's been around for about 3 years. You can find a bunch of their other videos at ggl.com (look for the big Epileptic Gaming gfx). If you guys liked their stuff, you'd love their show. BTW, they said on the show that is was blatantly setup, and just a satire (in case any of you are actually losing sleep over the legitimacy of the vid).

I am sorry but i have to cry foul play. Want proof?

When laying in bed, he swings it but if you look at his hand, it leans to the right and actually ends with him pointing towards theh RIGHT. look at the video and the ball goes to the LEFT.

It doesn't matter if you are facing the censor bar for this game, it is just registering the speed and angle to which you are throwing the ball and where you line yourself up at. if it matter where you stood, then theyw ouldnt let you pick where you start from.

So FAKE!

I thought this was really funny. It would have been even better if they hadn't reused the same strike footage repeatedly. At least that would have given us the impression that the makers of the video could get more than 3-4 actual strikes on video.

The really funny part is Summas final line in his post:

"Now, once and for all, we see the true potential of this legendary game."

Clearly this is a limp attempt at demeaning Wii bowling as unrealistic and a waste of time. On the contrary this statement is completely true. Thats because the true potential of Wii Sports is for a group of friends to get together and have a good time. It appears thats exactly what these guys did in making the video. So while Robert was attempting to lessen the Wii, his statement actually describes what really IS happening in this video. Who cares if the Wii leads to satire as long as it provides the inspiration for expression and amusement. Nothing against the PS3 but I honestly doubt this group of guys will have as much fun with it as they did making this video.

@subnet6... we acutally didn't reuse the same strike footage until the end when the wii-mote's range finally gave way to the many walls we tried to put between it & it's momma-Wii.

"Joe's" is plural possesive. "Joes" is the plural form of the proper noun, and what you should have used.

Go back to Joystiq.

...honest to God, I tried going back into there. It's like trying to walk into a burning building full of typed out shouting and fifty comments that all are some derivative of "this isn't news" or "wow, Joystiq is biased".

Plus, their site looks crappy. Black is the new black.

Hey, I said its funny. I particularly like the one from the kiddie ride at the store, that was good. I'm just saying, you should have recorded a few extra strikes on the back end for the footage so it didn't look like you were reusing them. Thats all.

Guys, it's been really emotional. Time for me to pack my bags and head to borestiq, where I am somebody. Someone that gets it, you know. This Wii sports is for chumps and is obviously easy enough to play with my penis tucked so I should stop being interested in it. After some soul searching, I've reread this masterpiece of blogdom and still come to the same conclusion: It doesn't matter. But oh how i wanted IGN to get it in the MOUTH. It hurts.

I like how they make a big deal about how they can hide from the sensor bar or bowl from any angle and still get strikes. Wii bowling doesn't even use the sensor bar (the only thing in Wii sports that uses the sensor bar are the main menu screens). It's all controlled by the tilt and force of the movement. As long as you know how to do the correct motion, it really doesn't matter where you're at when you swing.

This is satire, to be sure, but it's too stupid to be funny. "hey kids, let's all have a chuckle at the blatantly obvious!"

I am back from my exciting journey to borestiq.com and oh the adventures i had! They have the same video there too! It's amazing. Go check it out, you'll be glad you did. I've never seen anything like it quite frankly. The article describing the video actually understood the piece was satirical in nature before publshing it, which makes me question their credibility. I only came back to tell you guys of the promised land of boredom. Boy, do I feel like shutting up now. Thanks Diego.

That was an awesome video.

Yeah, not sure what IGN was smoking. While it may take a marginal bit of video game skill to be good at Wii Bowling, it certainly doesn't take actual bowling skill, at least as far as I've found from playing it myself. No more than it takes actual tennis, baseball, golf, or boxing skill to be good at Wii Tennis, Baseball, Golf, or Boxing.

(sarcasm)
And with this game... this Wii Sports, if you will... Nintendo has truly proven that it is time for them to go the way of the dinosaur.

Wow, do people really still think that the sensor bar is required for the proper operation of all Wii games? News flash - if there ain't a pointer on the screen, the sensor bar ain't doing nuthin'. The 'sensor' bar is just a couple of infrared emitters picked up by the remote - it only functions to paint a pointer for aiming arrows, or pointing guns, or aiming a little hand at menu items. Wii Bowling doesn't use the sensor bar any more than Baseball, Golf, or Tennis. Quit pointing it at the screen already, it DOESN'T DO ANYTHING.

I suggest you take the ethical tack used by rather more credible blogs such as boingboing: when you've published an article with a grammatical error and then fix it, you should document the alteration.
