IGN's Casamassina has a secret photo

IGN's resident Nintendo commando Matt Cassamassina pulled a Greybush on his blog on friday -- I mean, of course, telling everybody that he has key information that would rock yo' world, y'know, if we was only able to spill it. Mind, the Greybush is a fundamentally different maneuver than the Linde, which -- well, you know.

There's some shady stuff goin' down, kids; stuff so shady I created an ill-fated reference to a forgotten Conan segment just to express it. Matt dropped the bomb Friday that he has bombs to drop, but can't, because Nintendo would drop bombs on him. Since that sentence makes virtually no sense, witness the following quote from his blog:

There are some potentially crazy-awesome games coming down the pipeline for Wii, by the way. You guys have no idea. I know that's vague -- has to be, but I've seen some stuff that you simply have no idea even exists and frankly, if you did, you'd flip out. Comments like these have a way of backfiring on me and i'm sure some people will be annoyed that I've even brought up, since I'm unable to give even a hint about the projects in question. Others will undoubtedly say that I'm merely making crap up because there's no way anybody can disprove statements that are intentionally so unrevealing. But whatev. I know that if I was in your position, I'd be happy just to know that some very cool, unexpected stuff is brewing somewhere way behind-the-scenes.
Happy? Not quite, Matt. I love my Wii and I'm having a great time with it, but once I've finished with the current stock of games -- what then? Sure, I'll be the first to acknowledge the fact that the first year of a console's existence tends to be the slowest. But if developers (particularly Nintendo and their illustrious and legendary in-house development studios) have something up their sleeve, now is the time to tell us about it. No amount of "oh god guys you have no idea seriously" is going to make the wait any easier. We're gnashing our teeth! Slide us an announcement or two, already!

I'd say the Wii in 2007 looks like it may be the best year for a console ever. Metroid 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl. I'm excited.

Wow, he really gave himself a lot of outs there with the whole "I have cool news that I can't announce but I promise it's cool and I know you probably don't believe me but whatev" routine there. I think "I have cool Wii news that I can't announce" would have been sufficient.

He just knew he'd get backlash for saying it in the first place. Tried to brush off the haters before they even started. Personally I'm sick of these announcements. If you can't say what the news is then stfu about it until you can.

I don't want to be a troll, but the best year for a console ever? Really? Your optimism is refreshing, but they haven't released a good game for the Wii yet, and the three games you listed seem to be pretty much the long and short of the good games coming up in 2007. The 360 has far and away a better line up than the Wii, and even the PS3 might challenge the Wii for second place. The coming few months *might* prove me wrong, but I'm just sort of baffled how you could look at the 2007 Wii lineup and say that it's the best for a console ever...

uh hippel.....didn't you get the memo about what is going to be released for 2007 just for nintendo titles only? that's the reason for his optimism. i believe the secrets matt c. is harboring have more to do with unannounced 3rd party titles that are coming that are suppose to be groundbreaking. in any case, here's the link:

http://wii.ign.com/articles/766/766803p1.html

personally i'm excited for whats upcoming for the wii. that forever blue game, and wii fitness look interesting, as well as disaster.

acp, I guess that's exciting, but that list you linked to has maybe 4 games that I would be interested in. I'm sure it's just different tastes (for example, I would rather play Mass Effect than Mario Party), but that list doesn't blow me away, to say the least. Having said that, SSBB might be enough by itself to make me buy a Wii, but only if it has online play.

I'm just glad I'm not the only one who likes playing with their Wii, or their Wii for that matter. There has been some serious Wii-hatin' going down and I'm sick of it.

I like my Wii, I like the games I have for it. I want a 360 then, if Sony pulls its heads out of its ass, I want a PS3. Until I save up the scrap. I play and enjoy my Wii.

gotta agree with hipple here.

it's hard to imagine that the wii in 2007 will best a console that'll house the likes of halo 3, mass effect, bioshock, too human (if it comes out this year), UT3, the darkness, orange box, gta, alan wake, alone in the dark, fable 2... i could go on. it just goes without saying that the 360's lineup is absolutely killer this year. i'd say it's seemingly got triple A for almost every genre, but if you want a game where you play a surgeon or cook cartoon eggs then you need to have a wii... just kidding. i'm really looking forward to mario galaxy and metroid 3, but i just can't imagine how the wii's lineup this year is the best EvAr! considering the contents of this post.

I'm really sorry if I've offended anyone; I tried to be nice about that, and I hate to go out of my way to bash the Wii, but I just wanted someone to explain how the Wii is going to have a great 2007 line up. Again, the opinions expressed here are obviously indicative of differing tastes, and I tend to get jumped on whenever I say anything remotely negative about Nintendo, so I guess I will refrain from any Wii discussion henceforth. It would be nice to have a discussion about things like "The 2007 Wii lineup for the Wii might be the best ever for a console" without things getting chippy, but since people obviously get very sentimental about their console of choice (myself included), so it seems unlikely that it will happen here.

Sonic turned out to be actually a lot of fun and SSX Blur comes out Tuesday. I haven't paid much attention beyond that, but I believe Paper Mario is in April.

I don't know about you, but I'd be more irritated that Nintendo itself isn't announcing all these cool games. Casamassina signed NDAs, and if he doesn't want to get left out of any potential exclusives, he has to kowtow to them, as ridiculous as the concept may be. I'm sure this is just his way of trying to let people know that 2007 for Wii is going to turn out different than 2002 for Gamecube.

If it's not true, well, that's fine too. I'm sure I'll get over it and play some of the numerous games for other systems.

I actually believe it to be true, every studio always has unanounced projects in the works. I wouldn't be surprised that quite a few studios saw the huge success of the Wii the past few months and decided "hey, it might be good to get on this" and start making their own projects. I would expect more and more projects getting anounced over the next few months as these projects move past prototype and a little further in production.

Matt's post is a vanity jig.

"I got a popsicle! Yo mom's on welfare!"

Whatever.

Industry talking heads don't have shit to say.

Game "journalists" who "interview" them have less to say.

BFD, Matt signed a EULA that says he can tell us about the hot, new games exactly three hours before they hit Best Buy.

Game journalism is straight-up horseshit.

I believe Nintendo has something up it's sleeve.

But in absolutely no way in hell is it going to be as big as Mr, tight-lips swears it will be

He makes it sounds as if Nintendo is going to win the console war singlehaldedly with these titles.

You can hype a good game. He can say he saw the Wii exclusive new Zelda title and hype it and BOOM the internets explodes. But you simply cannot take "nothing" and hype it like Cassamassina is doing. this is like last months Konami's announcement. Only difference is Konami had shit to show for all the hype.

Nintendo has something great in the works. nothing groundbreak or earth shattering. But something very good that we will be anticipating

There's also a load that are on the back of my mind, like the ones in that top ten list that was released on the blog here. I could describe some of them (I don't remember the names) and if half of them are good, I'm happy.

I should preface this by saying that I don't have a nexgen gaming system...nor am I really interested in one for another six months to a year. I'm going to milk my PS2 for its last dying breath. And then some.

But I don't really consider the decision to buy a Wii as an exclusive thing; if/when I go nexgen, it'll probably be with either a PS3/Xbox360 AND a Wii; they just aren't comparable. The huge games that come out on every system will still be on the Wii, usually with a neat twist (Marvel Alliance, Call of Duty 3, Madden). That also said, there's not much on that list that looks that appealing. I'll wait for the reviews on Metroid, but I've never been a big fan of the series. The tech demo of Scarface, the Manhunt game (if it materializes)....those are the games that I'm excited about. Every other console relies on 3rd party developers to create the coolest stuff on their console; Nintendo's going to be the same way.

I'm almost starting to think that the big in is crazy like a Fox for making the Wii such a low-tech graphics thing....developers can't just port in the exact same titles that are going Xbox360/PS3, they have to develop SPECIFICALLY for the Wii...which also makes sure that the controls actually take advantage of the wiimote and aren't just tacked on. Because of it the Wii is probably going to have the most exclusive titles of any system this gen. And low price means that you'll pick one up JUST for the exclusive stuff. Crazy. Like a fox.

I never thought of it from that angle, that's actually a really good point. I know everybody has already said to death that great exclusives are the only thing that will sell the PS3 and there aren't that many on the way, but I never thought about thinking about the Wii like that.

I'll admit that I'd like to get a 360 to have a stab at some good shooters but the problem with the system is the same as the Wii. Too many games in one direction. Unfortunately I don't have the time or energy to keep up with two systems let alone one.

Consumer electronic marketting is meant to appeal to the emotional sense.

Did people buy the iPod because they tried what the competition had and made a rational decision? Nope, they bought it because it had cool ads and all their friends had one.

The reaction when Sony showed off prerendered Motorsports footage? Ho hum. The reaction when Raving Rabids ran around scraming with plungers? GOTTA HAVE IT! Neither campaign showed any in-game footage, but we all know rabbits with plungers are cooler, so the game is going to be better!

For crying out loud... buy a console when games you like come out. Stop falling for this hype bullshit, or it's only going to get worse.

Yeah, the only reason Im buying a Wii, is b/c a few games I like are coming to it. Thats the only reason I buy a console. I didn't into a ps2 when it first came out, b/c I didn't see any games that were intresting to me, I waited until 04 to get one.
And I bought a gamecube for Smash Bros. and Zelda. Same for any other game. So every console I get its based on what games I see and what I like, not hype or promises of what my roughly 300$ investment might turn out to be.

It should be said that the last time Casamassina hyped a big Wii announcement that he couldn't talk about it ended up being that Dragon Quest Swords game... Which is neat I guess, but not exactly megaton. However, I have been hearing similar hints about a lot of great Wii content in the pipeline from the 1up.com podcasts. Nintendo is notorious for holding their cards close to their chest, and I doubt they're going to change anytime soon.

I'm still not fully convinced that third party developers will make any *good* games for tbe Wii. It may get a lot of exclusives but will those exclusives be fun?

I expect the Wii to sell a lot of hardware, but not a lot of software. Nintendo is attacking the casual gamer, and casual gamers don't dump tons of money into games. The few games they do buy will be those first party games Nintendo is releasing.

Didn't we see comments like this all the time when the DS first came out? Just like the DS, give the Wii a little time. Developers see how well it's doing and believe it or not, they have some creative people working for them and we will see good things come from it.
