IGN continues to outdo self in retardedness

IGN continues to outdo self in retardedness photo
     Ads

IGN may be one of the single worst gaming sites around, yet for some reason, people still flock to it like it's an oasis of insider knowledge. Perhaps it's time to really wake up and smell the smoke coming from the pea brains within. Case in point: Check out what made their GAMING peripheral of the year:

Xbox 360 HD-DVD Add-on
Sony made a controversial choice when it chose to base the PlayStation 3 upon the brand new Blu-ray disc technology, and has since run into some pretty serious production complications as a result. Microsoft stuck with regular DVD at launch, but has now launched the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive add-on. The $199 drive connects to a 360 via USB, and will also work with Windows Vista when it launches next year for the PC. Though limited via the 360's lack of HDMI output and support for 7.1 sound, for gamers that already own a 360 it is one of the best ways to get into next-gen DVD.

That's weird. Last I checked the HD-DVD drive only played movies. Hmmm, odd. Better still, look who won best new console (which is a strange category in itself because there's only two to choose from):

Sony PlayStation 3
Console launch years only come around twice a decade or so, and they're always guaranteed to be exciting years. The 360 matured dramatically since this time last year and its second-generation titles like Gears of War and CoD3 made the PlayStation 3's job of shocking the world with its immense power rather difficult.

Nintendo's Wii launched to massive mainstream applause and a lot of hope has been placed in the potential for gaming innovation via the console's unique controller. Nintendo disappointed some, however, by choosing not embrace HDTV or to compete with Sony and Microsoft in processing power. The Wii can't even play normal DVDs.

IGN: Worst. Gaming. Site. Ever.

And now they have sections for cars, girls, movies, comics, candy, phones, cake mixes, rape tools, elephants, short stories, ice sculptures, midgets, basic calculus, carpets, and reptiles. I may have forgot some, but clearly they're branching out where they shouldn't be.

I wish I could see a list of the 'nominees'. The 360 Steering wheel came out, that got some good reviews right? Vision Camera got a sort of luke warm reception, other than that what was there? PS3 and Wii don't have a lot of accessories yet do they?
I can kinda see where they are coming from, the HD DVD drive is the #1 Xbox 360 accessory i'm looking forward to getting, but it isn't exactly for games..........yet?

Much like Summa, 1UP is the only mainstream news site I have any respect for, which is odd given my hatred for EGM. I used to be a Gamespot loyalist, but I really just can't stand that windbag Greg Kasavin.

I'm surprised the Wii remote didn't Win best accessory, that's all it is!

Sorry, had to take that away before someone said it and actually meant it.

Actually, while I am no fan of IGN, or 1up/gamespot for that matter, I don't see a real problem with the HD add-on winning as the best accessory. It's really just a matter of semantics. If they had called it the "Best accessory for a games console", we would have fewer complaints.

As far as I'm concerned, I really appreciate the upgrade potential of the 360. While I'm not really interested in HD-DVD right now, I'm sure I will be eventually and $199 is a pretty cheap entry price for anyone already owning a 360.
It adds value to the platform as well as mainstream appeal which is really important this gen. (cool that I can call it "this" gen now. I was SO tired of the term "next" gen.

And such is why superlatives like "best" don't work; they're too subjective. Determining the "best" should always be left to the masses (thank you, Dtoid - http://www.destructoid.com/giveaway.php) - though, of course, it's ultimately up to the individual.

I agree, IGN is crap, BUT, the only thing it IS good for is for it's previews (case in point, the crackdown preview they had last week was friggin awesome, but it was really information that was done by Realtime Worls GIVEN to IGN...so it really doesn't count as theirs)

1UP is ok to a certain extent. I'm actually a fan of their 1UP show only because I normally watch it on Saturday mornings instead of Bratz or any other piece of garbage morning show they have on now.

Gamespy...weren't they originally supposed to be a program to help connect people to online games? Who the F are they to give me the latest news?

And GameSpot...well...I still have nightmares from the Wii/PS3 marathons they broadcasted online.

I don't bother talking to people about gaming if their source of gaming info is IGN. Once that's established I'd rather skip the subject and let them think they know what they're talking about. Most of the time someone says something retarded about gaming in general, I ask them where they get this info and they say "oh I read it on that gaming site IGN" and everyone else in the room ignores the dude and proceeds to drinking beer and talking trash about something else..

One thing I love about Destructoid is even though they're a big site, they don't seem bound to maintain some "professional corporate demeanor". I got a kick out of reading this post, and seeing a major site rip on another one. GG Summa.

By the way, you DO know IGN is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, right?

Murdoch also owns MySpace.

"What Myspace means to Murdoch"

It is not a coincidence that the suckiness of IGN coincides with the suckiness of Murdoch's other properties like FOX News.

IGN does suck, especially the writers, but it is a necessary evil; go there get what you need, and get out, quickly.

I went there a lot prior to the PS3 launch and the tone of the writer was so pretentious and holier than thou, even his pic pissed me off.

Oh No! Lezbros quest to educate us strikes again!

As if IGN started sucking just last year when newscorp bought them. They sucked well before late last year, as if the change in ownership would change much anyway.

And myspace? Ok, well that place sucks. You can blame Rupert for that if you want, I don't care to argue.

Oh, and Emokidsmakemelaugh, your post was HILARIOUS.

MySpace & IGN sucked long before Murdoch purchased them. IGN is good pretty much only for the media sections. It's the legions of annoying attention whores that make MySpace blow, if you ignore them it's not a bad way to keep in touch with friends.
