Idiot WoW player suing moron who took his character; wahmbulance dispatched photo

What's worse: Spending your whole life inside World of Warcraft or falling for a spam e-mail and giving away your WoW info which turns into you losing a character you spent your life working on?

Well, that is what happened to this guy who apparently forgot that you don't give your credit card info to anyone over any e-mail -- you'd think in 2006, most people would know better by now. So now, because he's an idiot and was probably upset he gave that Nigerian prince some money as well, he's going to sue the phishing e-mail culprit over his own stupidity.

View more of this tale of woe after the jump.

Here's how the guy got fooled:

On December 25th, 2006 I woke up to a big surprise. No, not a big pile of presents! I woke up to find my World of Warcraft character no longer existed. You may say, “Sure it’s just a video game, what’s the big deal?” Oh, when you put 286 days of playtime in one character, it is a huge deal.

For you WoW fanatics that actually care about the details... I had a level 60 human warlock with my full tier 2 set, full grand marshall set, (3/8) tier 3, and more gold then you could ever ask for.

I figured it was a mistake by Blizzard and I would get my guy back. But, I was oh so wrong. After contacting Blizzard (through Game Master and telephone) at least a dozen times, I was finally told, “the password to you’re account has most likely been stolen due to phishing. Please change you’re password and good luck! Sorry we could not recover your lost characters.” I had no idea what the hell “phishing” was at this point and I was pretty pissed off that they would not give me my guy back.

I wasn’t just going to leave it at that! I am not going to just let someone delete my guy and get away with it. So, I looked up what phishing is. Turns out it is when people send you e-mails and try to steal your password by setting up fake websites. Then, I checked all of my e-mails to see if there was ever anything from Blizzard. Turns out, on December 23rd 2006 I received an e-mail asking me to “update my credit card information.”  Which seemed to fit perfectly considering I just got a new credit card!

I am a man who is not concerned with money (which is why I play World of Warcraft all day), so I found an Investigative Research firm to locate the one who sent me this e-mail! One of the best in the Eastern United States. Sure, it seems a little far fetched over a computer game. But, it’s a computer game that I invested 286 days of my life in to. So, it is just the principal of the thing.

I was completely amazed with their service, within 3 days I had a name of the person I was looking for. Not only did I have his name but, everything else I’d ever need to know about him.  Luckily enough, this man is not from some crazy 3rd world country; instead, he is from the good ol’ United States. So, it should not be too hard locating the culrpit.

Now, for the fun part. Finding a law firm that will pursue this case. I will be suing for the 286 days of life this man stole from me, and the $2000 it cost me to figure out everything about him. Plus I am sure the feds will be happy to hear I found a man who has been phishing people’s credit card numbers through e-mail.

Seeing this man sentenced to years in prison, and me getting all of his life time savings (plus everything he will ever make in the future) will surly make me feel a little better.

Spammers beware, there's an idiot out there looking for you right now.

On the one hand, this guy's an idiot. On the other hand, I'm glad he's doing something about phishing. Maybe if this story gets out, phishers will beware and cut the crap? A man can dream, I suppose.

I'm going to have to go against the grain here. There is no law against being an idiot, even though there should be; but there most cetainly are laws broken when stealing someone's credit card information.

Is the guy who had his info stolen an ignoramus? Absolutely. But in this case, I hope that the asshat who sent out the spam/phishing e-mail gets a nice, long prison sentence. I applaud the ignoramus for going as far as he has.

In this world we live in..I am not surprised this guy is suing for something that was his fault....but it reminds of another case where someone was suing McD's cause the coffee was too hot..remember that?..and alot of people were saying that was stupid...or how about suing fast food restaurants cause they make people fat?...heard that somewhere too...so at least he is doing something about this phishing that people still fall for...how far will he get?...who knows... :)

I dont care how much money you have but if someone had my credit card information I think WoW would be the last thing on my mind...

Seriously if you had all this guys information and apparently enough money to be more worried about a game than your credit card information, what would you do with it?

I'm pretty sure... no one stole his credit card information, he gave it away. I'm not a lawyer, I guess it's still fraud.

I also like the fact that in his own write-up he was bragging about how much of his life he wasted playing this game, though that wasn't the word he used.

Personally, I'd hunt him down and pull his nails out untill he gave the account back. I don't even like or play WoW (Guild Wars for me :D) but I wouldn't want others to know what a retard I am.

Guild Wars FTW...

Seriously though, I don't know whats worse, that he got his character stolen or that he paid a freakin $2000 to get that information. There's GOT to be a cheaper way.

Cry more n00b. But honestly, I play WoW and 286 is... just unheard of, I know it's not impossible but f*ck it's damnright retarded... I relize that his character has such impressive items and that so much time has gone into it but when does one decide that it's no life to live? Everything in moderation. I know that not the point of this article but I just wanted to mention it.

Maybe this break from WoW will do him good, he can get a life or something in the meantime...

Haha. How long has this guy been on the internet? Seriously, if phishing is completely new to him, maybe he should spend less time in WoW.

Haha. Why in fuck's sake would Blizzard be aware that he got a new credit card and want to update his payment information? We live in a connected world, but it's not THAT connected.

This guy and people like him deserve the stuff that happens to them. Just like the people who open email attachments and give their computer a virus, or fat people that eat a lot of McDonalds and in turn get fat, you make your choices and you must live with them. Suing someone doesn't right a stupid decision.

Only 286 days...pfff...

No matter how hard I try, my mom still forgets no matter how many times I tell her that people will try to steal your CC in emails by the same method. All she does is play on yahoo games and check her email and it scares me because I know she can fall for things like this :(

He isnt a idiot because hes a victim of a phishing scam. I HOPE THAT BASTARD GOES TO JAIL FOR TAKING HIS CHARACTER! If it were half of u people that got ur char taken away, im sure you would have been very upset too. the only idiot here is the people who flame him for playing an online game that most of you probably play yourselves. Shut the hell up and get a life yourselves. Wanna phish peoples accts? then have fun in jail. GOOD JOB PROSECUTING THIS ONE! WOOOO THROW HIS ASS IN PRISON!!!
