Idiot pastor wants to have a videogame burning: Dark ages alive and well photo

Simply amazing. Yet another moron has come out of the woodwork to jump on the "games are evil" train and share his myopic, frightened views with the world. The real kicker here is that he suggests having a "game burning" without the slightest trace of irony.

Rev. Richard Patrick had this to say, blaming entertainment for crime, rather than, y'know, criminals:

We are considering having something similar to a rally where parents and children can bring CDs and video games that they consider are destructive to the mind set of our youth and have a burning, just like they had a gun buyback last year...

Young people are being influenced by what they see and what they hear. They are being influenced by television ... television and videos are telling young people a vision but something that's not reality...

[Violent media] has a tremendous influence on young people and violence. That's basically all they see. Most of them try to emulate what they see, when in reality, the people they see don't even live in those communities. Some of the rappers they see on TV portraying crime don't live in the urban areas — they live in the suburbs somewhere. It's all a facade.

Preach on, Reverend! I'll be sure to hold my tongue when you convince children to burn their videogames because they're being "influenced" by them, not that you'd be doing anything like that, right? Hypocrite.

It's just scary that the word "burning" can be casually tossed around like that, as if it's completely natural and not at all mental. Society really hasn't traveled far from the days when books were scary to crowds of clucking morons, no matter how much we think we've evolved as a species.

Look, let's not turn this into a philosophical debate here. This is Destructoid, after all.

Also, I hate religious nutjobs. Let people worship peacefully; when religion turns violent, that's when it goes wrong.

rarrgh, science vs. religion. would you both stop acting so retardedly ghey. Without faith, you have nothing, without out science, you have proof of nothing. Just because someone can't figure out the math on God, doesn't mean something doesn't exist.

I'm glad you hate Christianity so much (because it's never any other religion - fact) but just because someone mentions it, doesn't mean you have to throw a fit. We aren't trying to convert you.. hell, i could give to fucks less if you believe in a God, but you probably believe in evolution, and the big bang, which, are still theory, based on words of man, same as a book of religion.

On the other hand, religious zealot's are the worst kind of people, simply because they choose to believe what they follow is law without question. A challenge to ones way of thinking stimulates creativity, enlightenment, and questions, something science brings forth day in and day out.

blah blah TL;DR: Zealot's on either side fuck the pooch, but we still need them both.

Religion is a farce. It traces back to a bunch of superstitious morons who wrote a book one day and said it was the "word of God". And to this day, there are people that would do or say anything and stand behind that storybook to justify it. There is no God. No super-being in the sky. No all-knowing all-powerful deity thats made the promised land in the clouds. There is just us, the people of Earth. We forge our destinies. We, by our actions, dictate what the future holds. And based on our past, our future is fucked! Wake up and smell the crazy already! So many people in this world really are sheep, just waiting for the slaughter. Open your eyes and make your own decisions. Stop listening to others for guidance. They dont know whats best for you...YOU do!!

The internets and religious discussion most certainly don't mix. Hell, the internets can't even handle discussion about pieces of electronic equipment.

Also, all the random comments about "let's burn this or that" aren't helping. I know most of them are jokes, after all this is Destructoid, but that's just bringing our pro-gaming stance down many notches.

It's okay to bash someone or their beliefs as long as you think they're white trash, but as soon as you find out they're not, you draw back as to not be percieved as "racist, intolerant, prejudice" etc. Anyway, pastor's burning practices are fail, but that doesn't mean some of his views are in the wrong. You know, all the people who are saying we should burn Bibles or burn anything are basically just like that pastor. Can we not lower ourselves to his level please people?

Also, to all the "atheist eletists", the idea of a higher power creating the world makes just as much sense as the idea that there was a random explosion that created matter. For the record, their is a theory of a higher power that is accepted as being a legitimate scientific theory, just like the other theories that are yet to be proven.

Also, not to generalize because everyone is different and hopefully makes their own decisions, many people who don't believe in God just can't fathom that there is someone who is smarter than they'll ever be and at a level of understanding beyond their own. Get off your soapboxes and humble yourselves, please, it's getting old.

Also, stop saying that "religion" causes more problems than X. It isn't religion, it is the crazy fanatics that could be representing anything, doesn't have to be religion. And for the record, many things that religion is blamed for, were really for money and power, under the disguise of religion to get people to follow them.

Stop assuming that just because someone believes in God and Heaven that they are a mindless sheep. I went to church faithfully until I was about 22 or 23. Then I realized that I was tired of hearing other peoples' interpretations of the Bible that I didn't agree with. Currently I don't go to church because I haven't found one that matches my beliefs and views of what the Bible says (or was supposed to say). But I never stopped believing for a second and am still very religious, just on my own.

So ya, that pastor is an idiot, but not all of Christianity is my point.

And I to created an account here to post on this thread.

Science has also proven genetically that all mankind comes from one woman in the middle of Africa supposedly. But no one spouts off about that. So everyone could be right and wrong at the same time. Let's just say I hedge my bets on the good side. Doesn't mean that I go around thumping the Bible saying its the end all be all. Just playing it safe.

What I love about this is how they juxtapose it with the gun buyback.

"Buy back the guns, but BURN THE GAMES!!!"

And boy oh boy could I type a lot about this "religion" debate but you know why I'm going to stay out of it (mostly)? Because I'm not a dick.

I'll just mention one thing (brought on by Awetopsy's post)

If you're prepared to call someone on their lack of "facts," you had better be ready to present your own.

This would have to be my least favorite aspect of religious debates. Both sides of the argument always end up resorting to yelling "Where's your proof?" over an over again.

Atheists are asking for proof from people who think it's unnecessary and Christians ask for proof (of things such as evolution) despite the fact that their entire belief system is based on faith which is a purposeful LACK of proof.

It's an unwinnable argument because both sides want something the other isn't willing to concede.

I mean, I love GTA4, but I'm not going to let my kids play it. I love the Family Guy, but I wouldn't dare let my kids watch it, and I think that underneath the "BURN TEH GAMEZ!" rhetoric there is a better message rather than just setting games aflame.

Religon has killed more people than it has saved.

It is the worst mental disease on this planet where sufferers are deluded and try to blackmail others into believing there fictional god and are nso warped they can not see sense of what is real and what is fake.

Both the above is indisputable FACT!

Religon is no good and serves no purpose what so ever in the slightest. It just causes pain and suffering, blackmail and false hope, delusions of grandure, a fake crutch for the sick, silly arguements when time could be better spent, a money spinning business for the masses, propoganda without substance, conflicts of interests threatening voilence, and at the end of the day created by man for there own intent and changed through the years by man to mean different things to suit there needs.

Even people of the same faith dissagree with each other and cherry pick what they wish to believe.

It's all a load of bullshit that should be banned to make the world a safer place.

I find it hilarious that so many supposed devout Christians are the least Christian people you will ever meet. The values preached by Jesus are simple and beautiful and represent an ideal of behavior we all should aspire to.

My Issues with religion don't stem with the message they stem with jackholes like this preacher who use religion as a justification for inflicting their fears and views on society.

His actions are nothing more that fear and ignorance lashing out at a world and ideas that he is incapable of comprehending.

Hitler burned books because they spread ideas that undermined his rule. All religious book burnings have had similar basis in maintaining power over the masses. Cant have the people thinking for themselves and making rational informed decisions. NO, they must obey the word and do as we say.

G.W. Bush and Cheney pull the same shit in office.

Burning Games or books or Pastors isn't the answer. Having a rational intelligent discussion is. Sadly most Americans are incapable of rational intelligent thought as I discover on a daily basis living in South Florida.
To stave of those trolls who are gonna say go back to my country or whatever I am American. Most of the time my own Country is an embarrassment to me though.

xe-cute, read earlier post please. Religion did none of those things, people did those things. People do those things every day, not always because of religion, it's a trait of humanity, not religious people. Non-religious people do fucked up things all the same. Stop blaming religion because you don't agree with it and want it to go away, that's what babies do.

I like your post dinnertimeninja, because you're right. It boils down to proof. Here's the problem, everyone who trusts science disowns religion because it isn't proven. They don't realize that science is just as fallable as anything else is, scientists are constantly disproving each other. This means that even if there is proof, it came from a human and could easily (and probably does) have mistakes. At the same time, Christians believe by faith. Therefore, they're not going to try to prove it, because they don't need to.

For example, on more than one occasion, archeologists found an old animal tooth while digging around the same time that the caveman theories started to emerge. They claimed it was the tooth of a caveman (later being proven wrong). These were accepted, prominent scientists, so how do we know that shit doesn't happen all the time?

Just another trait of humanity, always wants to be right and will go at any length to win the argument just for show, even if they know they're wrong. This argument will never go away, just like the console internet wars

When people believe in fictional invisible character to a degree that they spout there beliefs at every oportunity and try to 'persuade' others to believe in something that does not exist than I and many others believe there is something mentally wrong with them.

For example if I was to say that I believe in The Flying Spaghetti Monster would you think I was mentaly insane? Yes you would and with good reason, and there is no difference between believing in the flying spaghetti monster and your religion.

P.S. I am sure I do not need to defend the fact that religion has caused more lives than it has saved, I am sure even a miss-guided individual with delusions can work that one out pretty easily. Christianity even endorse killing through the crusades, also just read the old testiment and you get the general idea.

It is a shame parents still brain wash there kids from childhood to believe in such crap, and is the only reason these outdated dangerous cults called religion carry on spouting there nonesense with some silly desire to convince all none believers for some weird reason (why try and spread such a disease to perfectly healthy people by blackmailing and scaremongering with fictional visions of eternity in hell for not believing?... wow very healthy).

And stop using religion as a scapegoat. PEOPLE kill people. PEOPLE fuck things up. PEOPLE are idiots. Let's not blame the belief system, but blame those who thought it up and follow it. As someone who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ -- something that, though I don't care for the word "religion," obviously is a religion -- it has done me good and it will do me good, and I say God bles- er, sorry. Slipped into Dickens there, for a second. Anyway, you condemning all religion is the exact same thing as Ben Stein saying that a life based around science will unfailingly lead you to commit murder. (Yes, he said that.)

Anyway, if anyone here thinks an atheist society would be less violent and less hostile, you're out of your mind, to put it nicely. The failings you attribute to religion are humanity's failings first and foremost, and humans are humans, no matter what they believe. If you really believe religion alone makes our society worse, you're living in a fool's paradise. (Figuratively and literally.)

It wasn't about religion, just the people who organised it said it was to get people to fight with them (the sheep, which is a shame). You really can't bring up anything coming out of the medieval ages because the church was extremely corrupted by PEOPLE during that time and used to gain money and power. No..I dont like to preach...that would rather make me a hypocrite wouldnt it?

I simply was stating my own personal opinions. I believe that religion...ALL religion...is complete and utter nonsense. Its the blind leading the blind in search of an invisible "God" that does not exist!

I know its not a popular opinion. I know that people have always and will always NEED the belief in a "higher power" to handle the ups and downs of life. They need to blindly follow the leader and do what they're told in order to function in life.

I understand that....I just dont prescribe to it.

I am my own person and I make the decisions in my life and I decide where it leads. I dont need a leader to follow. I dont need a magical fairy-tale Father in the sky to help me cope with life. I am confident in my beliefs and I know that my destiny is what I make of it...not what some book tells me its supposed to be. I think for myself..unlike most religious followers Ive ever encountered.

Thats my opinion and I will stand steady behind it.
