Idiot pastor wants to have a videogame burning: Dark ages alive and well photo

Simply amazing. Yet another moron has come out of the woodwork to jump on the "games are evil" train and share his myopic, frightened views with the world. The real kicker here is that he suggests having a "game burning" without the slightest trace of irony.

Rev. Richard Patrick had this to say, blaming entertainment for crime, rather than, y'know, criminals:

We are considering having something similar to a rally where parents and children can bring CDs and video games that they consider are destructive to the mind set of our youth and have a burning, just like they had a gun buyback last year...

Young people are being influenced by what they see and what they hear. They are being influenced by television ... television and videos are telling young people a vision but something that's not reality...

[Violent media] has a tremendous influence on young people and violence. That's basically all they see. Most of them try to emulate what they see, when in reality, the people they see don't even live in those communities. Some of the rappers they see on TV portraying crime don't live in the urban areas — they live in the suburbs somewhere. It's all a facade.

Preach on, Reverend! I'll be sure to hold my tongue when you convince children to burn their videogames because they're being "influenced" by them, not that you'd be doing anything like that, right? Hypocrite.

It's just scary that the word "burning" can be casually tossed around like that, as if it's completely natural and not at all mental. Society really hasn't traveled far from the days when books were scary to crowds of clucking morons, no matter how much we think we've evolved as a species.

I think we should burn the Bible. Religion has caused more chaos in the past and present then videogames and music will ever do. I think these people are mad because their religious scare tactics arn't working anymore.

These are the guys that tell people to do stupid shit like this to protect the children, but later on you find that they molest kids, smoke crack, hire hookers, have sex in rest stop bathrooms...

And people still follow them. Amazing. So many sheep...

Man, this guy is great. Do you think he has a newsletter I could subscribe to?

"Young people are being influenced by what they see and what they hear." Awesome. lets let them see and hear that they should burn things they don't like.

That went over really big in Salem a few years back.

P.S. - "... have a burning, just like they had a gun buyback last year." I thought fire produced smoke, not dollars. Have I been doing it wrong?

What I love is that you have to purchase these games in order to burn theme. Somewhere in Kyoto, Miyamoto is laughing at you while lying on his piles and piles of money.

I don't think they'll be burning too many copies of Mario Party, buddy.

Also, I'm not surprised at all. As the great Agent K once said, "A person is smart, people are stupid."

I think this is a great idea. I'll show up with as many copies of the Left Behind series as I possibly can.

By the way, when we give such caustic responses to the preacher, we're essentially letting him win. Flamebait exists in places besides the internet, y'know.

Can't we burn something more natural and bio-degradable?!?!?! Ahhhh, what about a Pyre Fire burning of Reverants, Vicors and all them other loony Religous peeps who have obviously dropped too much LSD and pretend that they have not touched it to believe such nonesense.... very naughty and evil people as this picture proves FACT!

Hehe... I love burning sessions. Don't they realize that they have to buy the stuff first, to burn it? I really don't think companies care if you burn their shit after you give them money.

I suggest stealing it first.

And I don't think burning the bible would work. I think I'm pretty much a Christian, but even I realize the bible isn't supposed to be taken literally. It's a book of lessons. When people decide to take one sentence out of a book of millions of lines, and say "LOOKIT GAWD SAYS SO!!!!!" they obviously aren't in the right mind to tell anyone else what to do. But that's an entirely different story.

While Book, CD, record, and book burnings are the dumbest freaking thing on the planet how about the rest of you get a freaking clue and quit with the religion bashing.

Not every pastor or priest, or Christian (protestant or Catholic) subscribes to this type of crazy. If your going to toss someone under the bus then quit generalizing.

That's right don't get rid of your games sensibly by exchanging them for cash, exchange them for carcinogens instead.

I'm sure there's a study that proves that cancer has a less profound effect on people than video games

And let me be a little crazy here, but I read the entire interview with the pastor. While I still think the burning is a little extreme, he's got a lot of good to say when it comes to things in our culture that are influencing our kids.

Try reading the entire article before you pass judgment, please.

What good has religion done?

Religion teaches ignorance and hypocrisy. Most people I know manipulate the church by using "confession" as a way to keep doing sinful activities.

Back in day religion was used to give poor people and slaves hope so they would keep working 22 hours a day while living off of moldy bread and dirty water. Religion is used to manipulate and scare people into doing fucking stupid things that have a false meaning.

Religion that can evolve with societies ever expanding mores and scientific discoveries is alive, fluid. When crystalized dogma has subverted true religion, then it has lost it's usefulness to man. People who pathetically cling to the old ways and traditions are doing a disservice to our world. Religion MUST change with the tide of mankinds new understanding of the world and universe.

MINOR THREAT:

I believe it has. Not entirely, no, but there are plenty of Christians, Muslims, Jews and Buddhists who are able to conform their beliefs with the rest of mankind and live peacefully.

Of course, that's boring, and will never make the news. Hence, why you always see the religious nutjobs and fundamentalists in the headlines.

Also, Jack of No Trades, didn't you know many of society's charities (including the Salvation Army and the YMCA) are religion based?

What you call fiction I believe is truth. Do you have a problem with that?

When the "evolution only" and the "creation only" people realize the one logical solution, we will have made a monumental step forward.

The solution? -Evolution fits perfectly into God's plan. What greater achievment than fostering a single cell organism into a God conscious being can you think of?

Zardoz: No one is trying to end society, so fuck you.

Christians (at least the normal ones, anyway) believe that if the world is indeed ending, there is nothing AT ALL that will either bring it along faster, or be some sort of 'sign' that it's coming.

I love space, evolution, and the possiblity of multiple universes far more fascinating because it is something we can test and explore. Unlike science, religion is all based off a book that was created by man and represents a fairytale.

Spanish Inquisition, Crusades and destroying other nations religious systems, to install and spread your own, never mind the paedo priests and the cover ups and protection of them.
