I love announcements about announcements. For instance, at this year's QuakeCon, id Software spoke at the opening press conference and revealed that there would be no Doom 4 reveal ... at least, not this year. Giant Bomb reports that the only thing id did say about the game is that there won't be any announcements regarding it until next year's QuakeCon. See ya next year!
One small (but really cool) tidbit that leaked out was that Kevin Cloud, id's co-founder, will be running the Doom 4 project, and since he's been around since the original Doom, that can only mean good things. A year is a while to wait, but it's better than having no date to look forward to at all, isn't it?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Yes this is one of the grand-daddy's of FPS games, but with so many other, better ones out since the first one, and lets face it Doom 3 wasn't the savior people had thought it would be, its hard for me to get excited about this.
The writing was already on the wall when Doom 3 came out, and in 2009/2010 I just don't see Doom 4 doing all that well, no matter how well executed it is.
"the PC gaming scene has died"
everything you ever say about PC gaming is now totally irrelevant.
Look, I love the PC as much as anyone, but compare the numbers: PC game sales in the USA in 2008 totalled $701million, while in 2004 (when doom3 came out) it was $1.1 billion and it 1999 it was $1.9 billion. That is a death spiral if ever I've seen one, especially since console game sales have gone from $4.2 billion in 1999 to over $20 billion in 2008.
Hardware sales for desktops are also in a death spiral, and netbooks - which don't play games - are the only thing keeping PC sales from dropping.
Put your fanboyism aside for a second and think about that. The PC is on the ropes as a video game platform.
I'm actually suprised we haven't seen a Doom 4 yet. I mean what...It's been 5 years or so?
So please, do not doubt doom 4, it will be nothing like doom 3.. which honestly I quite enjoyed.. and honestly wouldn't be surprised if 50% of the people who played doom never even finished it or even played it and just jump on the mindless 'fuck doom & id bandwagon'
Benzido: Those numbers are also misleading since they only include the small number of retailers that NPD tracks. It doesn't even include things like amazon, let alone online distribution platforms like Steam.
those are NPD's retail sales figures for north america, which don't include digital distribution figures. steam sales are up 97% from june 2008, while retail sales for videogames on all platforms are down 31% in the same period.
also try taking into account MMO subscription fees:
"DFC expects that in 2013, 72 percent of MMO revenues will be coming from PC games, and 28 percent from console games – and, “right now, 33 percent of revenue generated by games in the United States is generated by people playing MMOs.”"
as for hardware sales:
"Market analyst Jon Peddie estimates that the market for PC gaming hardware stands at $20 billion today—and predicts it will expand to $34 billion by 2012."
pc gaming is not dying, it's growing just like console gaming.
I love Doom 3 and finish it but i can't help but feel like i'm watching a power ranger monster of the week show for the way that they are introducing new monster every 1 or 2 level and not much happen. The puzzles are fun but not as much fun as Half Life series. The graphics and monster design are really awesome though.
I can wait for Doom 4 till late 2010 (or early 2011) since i'll be so busy playing every jan 2010 released games ever!
