I really don't know what to think of this. I don't think every game needs to be a franchise, and with Rage imo looking as bland as ever, I really don't think they should be saying stuff like that.
I'll pick a new IP over a franchise any day, if both choices interest me and I have to pick only one.

Each story needs to have a fairly neat close that will wrap up the story arc presented in the game. If you want to have an overarching arc that you can drag out into a sequel or into an entire universe thats great. But finish my damn story you bastards!! I don't got to the store to buy Half a book...
I'm also all for getting away from the established characters and presenting another viewpoint to whats going on, a la Halo 3: ODST, or using established characters from a previous game as supporting characters in a new game which advances the story line, a la Metal Gear Solid 2.

I would be willing to agree with the "we need to turn games into franchises" mentality more if it meant the extra money the franchise games pull in was put towards decidedly one shot games. At the moment, they seem to be funding other franchises, and that is a goddamned shame.
I feel like playing a lot of games this gen is like watching a regular season basketball game. More than half the teams in the NBA make the playoffs, the regular season has almost no meaning. Why should I buy Dead Space, or Assassins Creed, or Mass Effect when I know there's going to be who knows how many more games continuing their stories, likely with enough DLC to choke and die on? I know not everyone feels that way (I put off watching The Wire for years knowing that it would end sooner than later, and I could enjoy the whole series at once), but that is my mentality with a lot of these franchises. I don't have that "ZOMG I NEED TO PLAY THIS NOW" mentality when it comes to games that will provide no closure, and charge me $20-40 more on top of what I paid for the game to play the DLC.
One of my very favorite games this gen is Mirror's Edge. It was clearly designed to be a franchise, and that franchise never materialized. Now, in my head, I get to wonder whether I'd rather have a new Mirror's Edge, a game that would likely be mainstreamified (likely ruined) in an attempt to bolster sales, or whether I would just rather leave it be. Franchises.

So does this mean we can stop looking forward to Doom VI, VII, and XIII and start expecting Doom '11, '12, '13, '14, '15, '16, etc.?

There is way too much time between games to not have a full story arc in each installment. I never really buy games based on story at least I wouldn't buy a game I didn't like the mechanics of the prequel to just to finish up some crap story.
And where the hell is my Bethseda/id racing game. Elder Scrolls Horses and Stilt Riders, Rage Buggies, and lets not forget Fallouts ... ummm .... Fast Travel? .... may be a bit unbalanced
See I personally hate this idea. While I believe franchises are nice because not o.ly are they a safe move for deve/pubs, they are also usually safe buys for consumers as well. What I would rather see are franchises like pixeljunk. Where the series carries the quality assurance from game to game, but it also means more innovation can happen in a relatively less risky atmosphere.
Oh I see ... we need more Brink and Hunted ... those were great games. In some universe, I'm sure. Right?

I only paid $30 for rage on amazon (preordered it super early and used $25 gift card) so I figure I can't lose..... I'm really hoping this game turns out good.... I'm off work next Tuesday, wed and Thursday so ill get to really jump in.
I can`t wait for Rage to come out on the market. I must confess I bought this similar and I tried to install in on my computer but I encountered some trouble with some exe files. It must have been some compatibility issue with the system, or so I acknowledged it. Anyway, franchises are a good deal for expansion throughout the world, so go ahead with it.
