id's Carmack says iPhone Fallout for Bethesda possible photo

Thanks in part to id Software's Technical Director John Carmack's iPhone love, most of the developer's back-catalog of games seems to making its way quite nicely to Apple's portable do-it-all device. While its upcoming title RAGE is already slated to get the iPhone treatment, Carmack has already had conversations about bringing some of its parent company's titles to the platform.

Speaking with Kotaku, Carmack says he's spoken with Bethesda's Executive Producer and Game Director Todd Howard adding, "we want to make something happen for those products as well." He says that he already has an internal proof of concept made for a portable Fallout, but that the companies are so busy with other projects right now that nothing has officially gotten off of the ground.

As a fan of Wolfenstein RPG and at the very least impressed by Doom Resurrection, the idea of a portable Fallout is -- at the very least -- intriguing. I'd say the platform is ripe for a return to the series' isometric strategy roots. What kind of game would you like Fallout iPhone to be?

Maybe an RTS conquer-the-wasteland type game?

Dude, Fallout wasn't an RTS. Tactics was the closest, and even that's a stretch.

Good. Let them ruin another perfectly good game by putting it on the stupid iPhone. What are you going to do...run the entire combat system in VATS? Because I see no other way a first person, or even traditional Fallout would somehow be any good on that thing or even playable.

Should I bring up Metal Gear Touch?

fallout 2 would work on it Panda. it is turn based. and anything turn based can be ported with ease.

Well, in theory, anything can be ported, but to be playable is another issue. I played all 3 Fallout games, and while 2 could be done, I don't trust the accuracy or consistency of touch screen only interfaces. Especially with Fallout, you'd have to increase the Hex size dramatically.

But, I assumed they meant trying to make a Fallout 3-ish game, since it was arguably the most accessible of the three in terms of play.

Accuracy and consistency haven't been issues in my experience.

@testmunky:
Yeah, and it wouldn't even matter anyway considering Fallout 3 was a game where the Sniper Rifle was your least accurate weapon if you weren't in VATS.

enough with this "@" bullshit everyone. type like you're talking to someone.

i still haven't played fallout3 so i can't make an opinion about what is there. its on the download now but taking forever. but with fallout2, aside from bugs, it would need to zoom in a bit to see what you're doing but i think it would work well.

Ergh everyone! No more of this Internet standard that helps clear up confusion and help people catch when they're being directed to about something when scrolling down walls of text! Blargh! Internet blog commenting should be more like real life! Hgralb!

Who do I sound like? C'mon...guess! If this were real life I'd be looking at him so I won't address him directly.

...okay that was dickish. You get the point though. Sorry if I offend.

It's hard to not be incredibly skeptical of any addition to the Fallout series on the iPhone. Some say the Wii is shifting the industry to focus on casual titles to the detriment of deeper games and gameplay. I say the iPhone is the true culprit in this trend.

I want a Legend of Zelda-style Fallout game on PSP. Either that or Elder Scrolls.
