id promises Rage won't be full of 'monster closets' photo

Cheap scares can work well in movies when done right, but when id attempted it for Doom 3, results were not exactly satisfying. The game was full of "monster closets" -- areas where enemies would hide and ambush the player when triggered from a certain distance. Maybe done once that could work. Not so much all the time. Lukcily, id has promised that Rage won't have such shenanigans.

"[In Rage] when you're going to the RC-Bomb base [from the demo] to deal with the Shrouded clan they're doing whatever they're supposed to be doing," begins Matt Hooper, "If they're supposed to be defending against you coming there, they'll be doing that. If they're just tinkering or having a conversation they'll do that. You will never see [a monster closet.]"

Good stuff. To me, an enemy that can actively seek you out or hold its ground in a defensive position is far more scarier than an enemy that sits still and jumps out at you. Rage sounds better and better the more I hear about it. Hopefully id can deliver on the huge promise.

Good!

In this day & age there's no reason for men or monster to remain in the closet.

It always made me laugh in Dynasty Warriors where you would see your allied soldiers and the enemy soldiers just standing there looking at each other, and they would only move when you got in close enough.

Hah. This just reminds me of when my roommate played through my copy of Doom 3 (which I still haven't really touched). He said that he started to back into areas because the game would so predictably spawn monsters behind you when walked into rooms.

I've always wanted to be able to shoot Sloth in the face. Thanks, id.

I liked the 'monster closets'. Never before had picking up ammo and health been so fucking intense.

Seriously... it seems like every enemy that comes out of id is a relative of Sloth from Goonies.

Bioshock was awesome/scary without the shit~jumping~at~you~around~random~corners shenanigans. There were like 3 "monster closets" I can offhandedly remember and those, combined with the citizens walking and talking till startled, made for a creepy experience.

I like that they're doing this. While I haven't played Doom 3, one of the reasons I quit playing Dead Space was because of all the "Boo!" moments. In an otherwise stellar game, I just couldn't stand it, especially when said boo moments would sometimes also damage you. Plenty of games can keep up the tension and fear without that crap, like Half Life 2's underrated Ravenholm chapter.

@xHOGUEx
You are right about shit not popping out at you, although they still liked to spawn stuff behind you. Somehow it still worked though, I guess because usually said spawned enemies were still unaware of your existence.

Good news for me. I just don't have the constitution to deal with monster closets.

Yay no more monster closets, this is certainly going to help Rage be more enjoyable than ID's previous games like Doom 3 (presumably)

Hopefully they don't bring the monster closets back for Doom4
