ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection tops charts! photo

I may have confessed to not being a fan of Team ICO's games, but that doesn't mean I can't celebrate its success. The ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection has topped the multiplatform sales chart in North America and Japan. Now that's encouraging!

Team ICO's collection actually managed to knock Gears of War 3 from the top of the chart, shunting it to second place. When you consider that neither ICO nor Shadow of the Colossus were particularly successful back in the PS2 era, this is pretty damn impressive.

Things like this let me know that gamers can have more varied tastes than just wanting the next Call of Duty. We talk about original games dying and single-player titles getting forced into extinction, but then something like this happens and you can't help feeling that things are going to be okay. At least for a while.

That's awesome, I always thought both of these games were pretty underground in general. I didnt think it could compete with the triple A titles, but shit, number 1? Excellent!

I'm a little confused. Gears 3 is multiplatform? I thought it was 360 exclusive...

Great news, either way!

Holy shit! I knew it had to be selling well when no place I've been to has had a single copy left but that's quite amazing to knock gears 3 off the top.

Kudos to the Ico team! Now bring us Last Guardian!

Well, after 5 years of us who actually played these games telling everyone else how awesome they are, they better go buy this!

I spent $120 on these games; you sure can afford $40.

@redeemer, multiplatform meaning the combined sales chart for all platforms.

Nice! I was worrying that it wouldn't do particularly great, and felt guilty because I haven't picked it up yet I'm sure there are plenty like me who still intend to purchase it soon, so the sales will likely continue.

I'm really glad to see it doing THIS well!

When I went to get this game in best buy on day one I was shocked and saddened when I couldn't initially find it because all copies had been picked up... except for one lonely copy hidden behind some other no-name game.

I knew right there this game wad gonna do well (trust me, for it to be sold out where I live is pretty damn impressive), and I'm happy to see its reaching the AAA status it rightfully deserves.

Fuck you, Ebert.

Ico sold well in the U.S (the creator even said it), and SotC was a greatest Hits title - you have to sell more than a million to get that! People sure do like to think they're in a club that loves some obscure game. Sorry to break it to you, but these games were not obscure when first released. My friends and I all owned Ico.

ugh, I get to look like the party pooper here.

from the link:

"Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded."

So take that as you may. It's through amazon so a realistic population would be in the thousands, not the millions. Also lacking from the source are raw data, no numbers are given. The charts show relative rankings. So if you want to woop woop, just keep that in mind.

Ironically I'm typing this post from a statistics lecture.

@Basstomouth The fact that it's #1 at Amazon is still a very impressive feat considering the competition.

Woo Hoo!! Good for Team Ico! Reading that second and third paragraph gives me a warm feeling inside. Also, kudos on using the word "shunting", Jim (If you're not sure why that's awesome check out a movie called "Society").

For some reason I had trouble just finding this damn game on Tuesday. Long story short, went to 2 best buys only for them to be sold out and then learned that all best buys in the city were sold out. Gave up and went to wal-mart where they had like 15 copies just sitting there. Victory!

You are telling me that a exclusive title of ps3, a re release, managed to kick xbox most selling exclusive new game gears 3? Wow, now that I call impresive. Now ICO & shadows get the glory that they deserve. This also let me know that the las guardian is going to be a supreme master piece too. Congratulations team ICo, you made history once again.

"pre-orders disregarded"

I hope people read the linked article, because this is not a straight "most units sold" ranking. ICO/Shadow sold a fraction of what Gear 3 sold, and by fraction I mean 1/30th. That's no slight on ICO/Shadow, of course, because only a few games will get close to 3 million units at launch.

What this means is that a lot of people are going for the Amazon deal that includes ICO/Shadow. I noticed it yesterday, that ICO/Shadow was number 1 on Amazon, and God of War Origins was in the top 10. It's a real-time slice of what's selling best when the author wrote the report.

What's a little misleading is that the data referenced here is really just from various Amazon sites in different territories. Gamasutra provided sales numbers for the week ending the 25th in Japan and Dark Souls (a PS3-exculsive there) had sold 279,567 and the Ico/SotC collection sold only 91,902. Of course, in the rest of the top-20 Ico and SotC being sold separately also amazingly make it in at 20 and 14, respectively. Good nes for great games all around it seems. :)
