They're all sequels. shooters. what Republicans call "lamestream". been there, done that. Nothing to see here folks, move along.
I've played 7/20. Trust me you're not missin much if you havn't played some of those.
examples? cod? bfbc2? another halo?? expanswion on fallout? plz how about something new?
Unless damaging the enemies makes numbers fly out of their heads, Dale gives it a pass ;)
There is a whole world of games that don't fit into the genres and styles covered in this Top 20 list. Dale does a great job of covering them. His work for Destructoid is completely valid, whether he's played the above games or not.
And writing off every game with guns, without even dipping your toe in to try one of them, when you want to be an authority on gaming (and I'd assume a game blogger/reviewer wants some authority on the subject) is ludicrous. He's paid to be write knowledgeably about the gaming world and is ignoring a gigantic part of it? I mean even Armond White sees the films that he ends up hating. He doesn't isolate himself from them.
How anyone hasn't played at least 3 of these is beyond me! It's ok to ignore the mainstream, but some of these are just so good you can't miss them, no matter what type of gamer you are.
I don't really know your tastes that well, but from what little I've gathered, I assume you would at least like Mass Effect.
Also I own only 8 of those titles, and furthermore only have played 3-- though it's a bit slanted as I only own a PS3. It's just too cookie-cutter of a list, with carbon-copy games.
I still don't understand why having played the latest multiplayer modes in COD will give Dale a wider perspective on the JRPGs he tends to cover. Having those experiences won't do anything to improve his skill as a gamer or writer.
And it's not like he's working in a Japanese vacuum. I'd be willing to bet that, as a Destructoid contributor, he reads a majority of its content, including the posts that touch on these Top 20 games. With YouTube etc. it's likely that he's seen most of these games in action. I know I have, and I don't own a 360.
There are people at Destructoid who cover these Top 20 games on a regular basis. Why is it so imperative that everyone play the same games?
Remember where you are; many of the writers of this site pride themselves on covering games and news items that might fly under the radar elsewhere. Many of them don't consider Bulletstorm and Gears of War to be the be-all and end all of gaming experiences (see: Max Scoville's recent brush-up with Epic). Many of them classify themselves as geeks, and their coverage skews that way. If you don't like it, maybe you're in the wrong place.
Anyway I feel kinda Spoiled I have played 11 out of 20 of these games Mostly rented them with gamefly ;D or blockbuster.
But reviewing JRPGs and only JRPGs as a niche without playing games like New Vegas is missing a large amount of the point. We all have seen some amount of stagnation in the JRPG genre and to properly criticize it, you have to know the alternatives. Through contrast, both virtues and flaws become more apparent. There is much that the JRPG world could learn from Fallout: New Vegas and Mass Effect 2 but without playing those games, you're missing out on the potential.
Honestly, rigid adherence to genre isn't a good thing, not from developers and not from writers.
(Lists 20 games representing a broad cross-section of gaming genres available: RPG, Sport, Open-world, Action, FPS, Sandbox, Sci-Fi, Period-Piece, and even Family-Friendly,)
"I've played none of them."

To what dark, quiet niche of the blog-reading, gaming public does a writer who does not play games cater? Perhaps you simply misspoke? By that I mean, you could have just said, "I only play imported, non-dubbed, non-subbed, Japanese voice-tracked games on my non-region-locked [/insert console other than Xbox 360]."
After someone mentioned how these results were compiled it's more understandable that AvP is there, but Army of Two and Crackdown:Rebooted?!
Okay, okay, I admit I got ripped off on Crackdown 2 as well *facepalms* not that I don't think it was a decent game but not worth anywhere close to $60.
Y'know Dale I have to concur you are missing out on some games that I have personally enjoyed very much, but I don't want to be another commenter that sounds like he's convinced that whatever I like everyone else should like as well. To each their own!
And I play the majority of my games on my xbox, so I won't argue that playing MP can be pretty annoying if you don't have friends to play with. But if you're going to try and say immature behavior doesn't happen on PSN you're talking out your ass.
Like I said, though, to each their own :) I enjoy reading your articles just as much as anyone else's, if only to inform me of games/genres I'm unfamiliar with
@rentson
I'm with you, Dale liking and writing about a specific type of game is fine with me. There are other writers on Destructoid to handle what he skips. Personally, I've only played one of those listed, though I own another that I haven't gotten around to playing yet.
@mrandydixon: AvP? i'm more concerned about Kinect Adventures even making the list.
I can honestly (honestly) say that I had more fun playing Kinect Adventures than I did playing AvP.
The way I look at it is this: If you like the games you're playing than you're a gamer and more power to you. Sure, I agree you're probably missing out on some good fun, but that's OK. I'm sure I'm missing out on some epic RPGs due to my lack of time and ever-changing tastes in games. It is what it is. So long as you enjoy yourself it's all good.
This random image happens to come from a company outing last winter. At first I thought some sort of weird fb joke was being played on me. But nope, that's us. Ha ha.
The interwebs are smaller than we think. :)
