There are times in my life where I think I'm going insane. When I'm up late watching Comedy Central and they actually start dropping the f-bomb despite it being basic cable. When I go to a McDonald's and see that they sell veggie-burgers. Right now, it's thanks to these videos of Extra Mario Bros.
The amazing powers wielded by some of the fan developers out there never ceases to astound me. From the looks of these videos, this game could go toe-to-toe with New Super Mario Bros in terms of raw Mario-ness. But it's the multiple Mario/Super Metroid mash-ups contained here that push this one into the "must have" category for me.
From the looks of these videos, Extra Mario Bros may be an actual game. With that, I'm officially on the hunt to track down a copy. Or some anti-psychotic medication, which ever I can get first.
More vids of this maybe real game can be seen here, here, here, and here.
Thanks Sistermind, who ever you are.

What in the hell?! Do want!
"adn" "soem" "Marion-ess"
spell check ftw. that is pretty freakin sweet tho.
That's batshit insane.
sweet.
There should be a link to every single mod posted here.
i just saw this. the final boss is odd
id love to see some more real nintendo character crossover games other than super smash. a kirby/mario game would rock.
Metroid/Mario mash-up? Looks pretty sweet. Nintendo should wise up and do something like this.
For anyone who's interested: http://smbarchives.run.buttobi.net/
Click on Lab File and it's #162. It's a SMB1 hack, so you'll need to patch the IPS to onto the ROM.
Ummm, wow. I expect a follow-up or update the moment you discover the location of this epicness, Mr. Holmes
Sorry for the spelling errors. I accidentally went live with my draft and not the final.
Please don't have me fired.
@lukich
Read the comments, theres a link to it.
As for this, Man, I watched the whole thing. Pretty damn great.
I would certainly get lost.
This is a strong candidate for technological achievement of the year.
@Tino
I watched the entire vid before commenting... oops.
When I opened the story there was 0 comments, so my bad. Thanks for the link though Slaughterhouse
Be real cool if it was an undiscovered alternate version of Mario 3, Nintendo had been working on after SMB2. Intended to be SMB3, but Nintendo scrapped it. Started over and we got the SMB3 we all know and love today.
They never threw this version away though, stashed it somewhere. Hidden from the public. Someone working at Nintendo stole the code and here we have it today.
Nah! That would be too cool. Probably a hack.
Hmm OR! judging by the way mario looks. He looks like the Mario from Super Mario World. Maybe it was gonna be SMB4. I dunno, whatever. It is intriguing though.
Totally sweet. Gotta go download this later.
Be sure to link it here.
Figured it was probably just a ROM hack...
There's some pretty sweet SMW ones too.
Congratulations guys, this is a one year old SMB1 ROM hack.
The way the author added so much that seems impossible to be in SMB is pure ASM6502 (The NES Assembly) hacking and adding. It is a nice hack, though.
I wanna learn ASM.
I know a little ASM, it's really not hard to learn, just have to have about two weeks patience with some tutorials.
Way to spoil the mystery for the rest of us, Sonicandtails.
Actually, since the bizarre language you aliens speak means nothing to me (pure ASM6502?) I guess the mystery remains.
If you all like this, you should look into Super Demo World by Fusoya, which is a hack of outstanding proportions of Super Mario World.
If you're more into speedruns, there's one on http://tasvideos.org/
Think of everything you like about Super Mario 3 and add it into Super Mario World. Oh yeah, and throw in a 100 story ghost house just to mess with you.
There are backgrounds from several different games, though the music is still the same. The hackery was apparently done with Lunar Magic, a SMW level editor.
Check it out!
@Johnathan Holmes:
ASM = Assembly language
6502 = Main CPU in NES
I fucking hate all these stupid fan hacks. They're all made for insane hardcore players and rely on glitches and insane techniques to play them and aren't any fun for 99.99% of the people out there to play. None of these people that spend time hacking this stuff ever try to make a game that would actually be fun.
Chain-reaction moves are what I miss about 2D games. 3D games have almost none of that these days, unless you count rocket jumps, which I don't.
Well, the sprite is almost certainly taken from Super Mario Land 2... The rest looks pretty danged cool, but I DO hope there's a map system of some sort in there. Otherwise, it's way too damn confusing-looking.
Wedge: The game does actually look like it's supposed to be played without glitching through it, given the amount of stuff the player in the video outright ignores or skips through.
@Wedge, its true, but most of the guys that make hacks make them for themselves then everyone wants a copy.
That was B E A UTIFUL!
@Wedge, I don't think so. The ones you see on YouTube and other video sites are those type, the ones that noone puts any effort into, but I have been in a ROM hacking community since 2003, and I have seen so many hacks that are full on level edits, graphic edits, translations, all kinds of things that had alot of work put in to them and are pretty. Mega Man hacks, SMW hacks, FF, Zelda, you name it. I reccomend taking a peek through www.romhacking.net and checking out the hacks there.
@twentythoughts
Y'know, at first I thought that you might be mistaken, but with the abundance of turtles about, you can definitely get through the walls that the player glitches through legitimately.
I'm gonna give this one a try.
Just looks like another average hack.
I think it looks pretty cool, wish there was an HD version of the first Mario Bros with new sprites and such :)
Whoa. What the heck?
A tool-assisted speedrun of a ROM hack? Is there anything that could possibly piss Nintendo off more?
I just hope i will never care enough about any game to get that ridiculously good at it. Hint that you spend too much time on one game: When the only way to find a challenge is to learn the programing language and design levels that are un-godly difficult. My question is what he is doing to top it.
If it's an actual game (though certainly just a ROM or something), I'll download it if it gets a bit more refined.
Excellent video.

Awesome.
It doesn't look like you can get hurt by the enemies. Only by the spikes...
Necros- Does your average SMB hack included newly remixed 8-Bit versions of music from the Super Metroid soundtrack? I played Super Abe Bros from beginning to end. No Super Metroid music to be found.
So either you're lying, or somebody sold me an unfinished copy of SAB.
The guy selling it to me did seem a little shifty. And I $1000 was a little steep.
Here's his picture. If you see him around, call the cops.
That game looks great. I'm in love with all mario games. We need this one.
This looks stupid.
@Jonathan Holmes: You see, you guys have played those shitty hacks that you see on IMockery and stuff. Those hacks like Super Penis Pros and Mega Gay. Those aren't real ROM hacks, those take a whole 10 seconds to make. There are hundreds of good ROM hacks out there, but because it's so accessible and easy to do, many morons make shit. There are tons of hacks out there with custom music too if that makes you happy.
What itemforty said.
My brain just melted.
Your mom looks stupid, but that didn't stop anyone from making YOU with her. just stopped em from sticking around afterwards. AW SNAP!
Kill me, but I found it rather dull to watch. *shot*
On second thought, yes, the graphics, gameplay and music isn't what oyu find in your average ROM hack, but it seems to miss a few of the loveable quirks. Maybe Mario and Metroid are just not compatible.
