Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Look I drink...

And I have been through the ringer lately. Over what you might ask. Well, that would be something that I personally can't discuss. But... and this is a big one. I can in fact bring you news that any company has made public.

This week the good folks at the lovely gaming company Konami released a video. Now I know that all of you Matlocks are already saying, "Konami said it wasn't a new video, but the same thing with a few new effects." Well, don't worry, the world needs idiots too. There are things in the video that are very clearly different that for some reason, have not been getting a lot of press. Kotaku and Joystiq were among the plethora of sites that covered the new version of the video, but even they made no mention of one thing I noticed. [Kotaku did actually]

Click "full story" and enjoy the show.

First off. I am sorry it has taken me so long to get this post up. I was a really tough choice to make, and I needed to think about it.

It is time for a contest. It is called "Spot the difference." The prize for getting a correct answer is an all you can eat buffet of common sense. I know you Matlock's are going to love this one.

Picture A is from the original old video:

oldbusted

Picture B is from the new and improved video:

newhotness

Do you notice anything missing from the second one? If you need more proof, (and I know some of you Matlocks do) check out the video below. The part you want to see is about 90% of the way in.

What does all this mean? Well... nothing really. I am just happy that Paris Hilton is back in jail.

[Thanks CannibalCalvin for the video]

[Update even before it goes live]

Cannibal's video is a joke. I know the comments were going to boom calling him a Ron Workman fanboy (Which is a huge mistake to be one) and that some people may not get it. It is a Dtoid community thing. If you don't understand, then hang out more. The long credits are greatness that comes with the territory of Toidland.

Love,

Ron

I work at Photobucket, so I have developed something of a hatred for humanity on the whole, but if there's one thing that makes me feel a little bit more benign about it all, it is Destructoid and it's awesome community.

Yeah, so do I get my check now?

Have you not seen the MGS4 trailer with otacon controlling the little robot? That whole trailer is pretty much a hand job for the cell processor. So even though konami is making it they were promoting sony...until now.

I wonder if people will ever realise I don't want to stare at their face while they express their opinion into a webcam for 5 minutes blandly. Hey you know all those bits where you're stuttering and your sentence falls apart? Yeh you know what editing is? You know when the sound is crap? Maybe you could record the sound again and dub it over. But then life's too short and you need to be an internet star now! The people must know the truth!

this whole business has gone really far enough...I bet this kind of news excites all players in the industry, but the actual chances of Mgs4 becoming a M$ 4 will be debatable for a bazillion light years in a far far away galaxy...have you guys not noticed a common trend...Konami rarely makes games for the Xbox platform and Bioware rarely makes games for Sony and both developers are great in their respective fields...I ve never heard rumors of mass effect coming onto the Ps3...Or Kotor III hitting both consoles

I don’t know whether anyone will remember the fact that Kojima had stated that Mgs3 would remain exclusive to Sony's console and It did...It would have been a waffle for the developers to port it onto the Xbox but they never did...I would love Mgs to come onto the 360 bloody FD#$% will save me a lot of money...but the chances of it actually occurring are pretty slim...Sony needs the game all right I this also goes out of hand then the company has to seriously reconsider a price cut otherwise a Monopoly shall it be in the console wars...

Btw this whole talk has me kind of puzzled...i wonder what the game is going to be like....I hope I don’t have to wait for 15 minutes watching an In game generated trailer to actually playing the game....

@Neelesh - Of course you will, it's metal gear.

You've never heard the rumors because that's not happening. You only need one thing to keep titles exclusive, and this one thing is the only thing that huge developers really care about.

. . .

. . .

That's right, it's money. Let's do some math, shall we?

If:
consoles = opportunities to sell a game
MSRP = $50
Developer cut = for the sake of discussion 20%, so let's just call it $10 (That's ridiculously high, publisher, retailer, supply chain cuts take a huge percentage, but for these purposes it doesn't really matter)
cost to develop MGS4 = $10M (I also think this is a very conservative estimate. WIth PS3 dev kits rumored to cost between $15K and $22K, if someone has a real number, please let me know, it doesn't take long to add enough kits, plus literally years of salaries, plus fluff and expenses to hit $10M)

If the above is true, then for Kojima to break even on MGS4, he has to sell a million copies.

Anyone know of a PS3 title that's sold a million copies? I don't.

So Kojima really doesn't have to port his title to the 360, only if he wants to sell enough games to make enough money to make MGS5.
TheStripe's Avatar - Comment posted on 06/09/2007 21:10

The other way Kojima makes money is a huge chunk of change from Sony to not put it on another console. And unless I misread something, Sony doesn't have the deepest of pockets these days.

Do you think that maybe, just maybe, Microsoft inked a deal long ago, but still neither party can say a word until after the Sony exclusivity deal into 08 comes to a close? Most likely that would be the case, in my opinion.

I still don't understand this at all. Why are so many people so fucking dead set against MGS4 even possibly coming to the 360? It's almost like they're afraid that the mere idea of it will afflict them with AIDS or something, and so they must attempt to crush the concept with all of their might.

In addition to the whole thing about posting random links to unofficial and irrelevant fansites, they also keep bringing up other games that similarly have zero relevance to the situation in any way, like Zelda or Mass Effect or Halo or whatever. If there was precedent for these games appearing on other systems, it wouldn't be all that far fetched to believe that future versions of them might do so as well, right? However, there isn't any precedent for them, aside from maybe KotOR and Jade Empire and Halo on the PC or, heaven forbid, those shitty Phillips CDi Zelda games. That's about it. Therefore, it's harder to believe than that MGS4 is coming to the 360. That doesn't mean it's impossible that it'll ever happen, just that it's harder to believe. And, as unlikely as it is to ever happen, even if, let's say, Zelda did come out for the PS3 or 360, that's certainly not something that I would be having a gigantic hissy fit about, regardless of however big a Nintendo Fanboy™ I am perceived to be. Hell, ten years ago, I wouldn't have thought we'd ever see a Sonic the Hedgehog game on a Nintendo system, but look at things now. As such, I won't say that you'll never, ever see a Nintendo game on a non-Nintendo system.

The Metal Gear series, on the other hand, has appeared on all three last gen consoles, and even the god damned Game Boy Color around roughly the same time, so why is it so incomprehensible to some that it maybe, just maybe, won't be a PS3-exclusive title this generation as well?

No, really, why? I seriously don't get it, except to just write it off as simple fanboy asininity. But I feel that there has to be more to it than that. Can mere fanboy assholery truly be the sole motivating force behind all this shit? Ron seems to have all his ducks in a row for the most part, so why are so many people so bound and determined to make a liar out of him? Given the past, it's very likely that he indeed knows exactly what he's talking about. Because, as others have already pointed out, considering the limb out onto which he has climbed with this thing, heaven help Destructoid if he doesn't.

Well !million copies aint that much, it will still be awhile for MGS4 to come out.As we know MGS4 is one of the most awaited games for PS3 and by October when most of sonys 1st party games are out, more people will have a PS3 meaning more people will buy MGS4.And im not sure if there is a ps3 game that sold more than a million but i think Resistance sold 600,000 copies in Uk alone, so i think it might have passed 1 million, adding all the sales in other regions

The more people that get to play it, the better. This whole fight needs to fucking end. I am willing to cut down both mgs and ps3 fanboys that stand in my way. This fight is fucking stupid. Support Kojima and Konami not the fucking system.

Kassatsu- why don't they brand systems on TGS trailers? Is TGS a high holy day and one must not take the lords name in vain?

I'm Ok- I think it all boils down to this. Most people bought a 360 to play "traditional" kick ass violent games. Most people bought the Wii to play Nintendo games and weird games.

Most people bought the PS3 for a trophy, and to be a part of the "winning" team. Every time they lose and exclusive, their trophy gets less shiney. Their team loses a point.

I'm not saying every PS3 owner thinks this way, but a lot of the more vocal internet savy ones do.

Tron Knotts: "Jenny: Why did they put the PS3 logo on the first video then?"

The first video was used at the Sony E3 press conference back in 2006, this video was released through Konami without the intention of it being used at any public Sony conferences. Again, there is no reason to put in a PS3 ad.

Man, you people probably still believe that Santa Claus exists somewhere with the Easter Bunny.

Why would anyone spend 600 dollars on a system, when the one real game they want is years away? Wouldn't the obvious choice be to wait until the game came out, and then buy it? Especially when by the time it comes out, the system may even be cheaper.

I still don't understand the reasoning. If she's just pissed because she wanted it to be exclusive, then that's fine. You can be pissed at yourself for being stupid enough to buy a game system for a game that has no real release date or anything yet. You can be pissed that Sony fails at keeping exclusives, that's Sony's fault. Not Ron Workman's, not Destructoid, and not even Hideo Kojima. It is entirely possible that Sony is fallible, I know, I was shocked too.

They should actually be pissed at themselves, for not buying enough sony shovelware to fund Sony's exclusives.
Tron Knotts's Avatar - Comment posted on 06/10/2007 10:29

Jenny- Your reasoning is not convincing. The placement of the PS3 logo at the end of the vid is not an advertisement. It's an identifier of what console it will be on, just like all game commercials have on tv, etc, etc. But I know you know that. You're just trying to be funny, or something... right?

Tazarthayoot- Most people didn't buy the PS3 to play games right now. They bought it as a trophy right now, and they bought it to be "winners" right now, and to maybe play games on next year. The more exclusives the PS3 loses, the less their trophy is worth, and the less winners they are. The fact that they will still get to play games on the thing next year means nothing. The trophy and "winner" aspect is much more important to them than actually playing fun videogames.

Can't people just selltheir PS3's on ebay for $500, then buy a new 360 with the money?

Here's one currently going for $455, $22 shipping. Not a bad price for a system with next to no games.
