I am 8 Bit opening draws the best of LAs chic geeks photo
     Artsy fartsy

There is something about being surrounded by video game art and jamming out to chiptunes that makes me feel at home. Apparently I am not the only one, as Gallery 1988 on Melrose had a line wrapped around the block last night to see this year's I am 8 Bit premiere. There wasn't an inch of room to spare among the throngs of geek hungry attendees.

In addition to well loved artists like Luke Chueh and Amy Sol, we got to check out the work of tons of other Gallery 1988's wicked alchemists. Interpretations ranged from serious to hilarious. It's a thrill to see this show getting bigger and bigger every year, although at the rate they are going, the gallery may need to expand by the time I am 8 Bit 2008 rolls around.

Check out the pics and tell us about your favorites.

Cool art, but why the hell are the pictures at such horrible angles?

Too bad, LA is a bit far to go see an expo, I think the shortest way is by traveling west.

That's some pretty sweet art, and I have to say that the Last Supper one is amazing.

How does someone go about submitting their work for that?

Okay. So. Goal for next year? Get something in this exhibit. Nermal has some friends who want in.

I think they were at angles so the flash wouldn't reflect off some of them. Not sure, though.

I was loving the four pixelly pornographic ones - Super Mario, Zelda II, and Kung Fu(?) if I'm not mistaken. It's nice to see sleazy video game art that DOESN'T involve those DOA floozies.

Yep, head on these pics showed a lot of glare, hence the angle.

I was just happy there was some Burger Time art in there at the end. It would have been a travesty if there wasn't.

Good stuff as usual. I would love to go to one of these shows. Alas.

My favorites are the Qbert in a straight jacket portrait, and Mario frying up a Yoshi egg.

Just to be clear, I had to take the pictures that way so the flash glare didn't show up. You can see it in some that I did do more head on.

Pixellated porno, tee hee.
The black and white Q*Bert Civil War-esque portrait got to me as well. Every time I don't recognize the game referenced by a work I get sad :(

Dammit, I should try and make it up there this year.
