Hut! Nintendo patents a soft football controller photo

The above patent image? HA! Hilarious!

It looks like Nintendo has been cooking up a soft football controller for the Wii, according to a recently filed patent submitted by Howard Chang, VP for R&D. It looks to be something like a NERF football with a groove cut out for the Wii Remote. You wrap your hands around the ball as normal, and your fingers can touch the Wii Remote buttons. Other images in the patent suggest that even the Nunchuck could be stuffed inside. Siliconera explains that the ball would even be able to sense shifting and running. And in true Nintendo fashion, there's a handstrap to keep things safe.

Look, it's going to be hard for kids to resist the urge to throw this thing. If you're supposed to mimic the football throw to control it, these kids are only one step away -- letting go -- from having this ball fly into your television.

What do you think of this thing? Do you see yourself using this kind of controller?

Truly the ideas Nintendo patents are pretty wild these days. I could never see myself using a football controller, but I have a slight suspicion that one day I will turn on the news and hear a news anchor blaming Nintendo because a local five year old destroyed a plasma screen with one of these.

@Moofey What the hell? Maybe you put your Wiimote in the dominatrix whip and attach the Nunchuck to some string.

I like that they got an actual screenshot from the game for the concept art. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Wii handles such advanced graphics compared to what it normally puts out though.

Holy shit, that's funny. You made a joke about Wii's graphical capabilities. He'll be here all week, folks!

Honestly, as everyone should know by now, patents like these rare see the light of day. And didn't Sony release a patent about a laughing emotion controller or some such bullshit? Everyone company is guilty of this.

You'd be surprised at the number of patents that any one company applies for in a year that never lead anywhere. Just saying.

I really hope this is just the product of some genius at Nintendo going, "Hey, Microsoft and Sony are copying everything we do, so let's throw them off the trail with a patent for something just retarded enough to be believable!" Because if they're serious, holy shit.

Even if I did play sports games I wouldn't use this controller.

You wouldn't throw it out of your hands, so what's the point - you'd just be frantically jerking it back and forward to "pass". You'd look like a fool.

But just because it has been patented, doesn't mean it will be made. Many patents are filed, but no product ever comes of it. Even I don't think nintendo would be silly enough to make such a thing.
