Hurry and cover your butt: Dreamcast survey may have been a phishing scheme? photo

You may have read on Kotaku or in our community blogs that Sega was curious as to how many people out there still owned a Dreamcast. There was a supposed poll for us to fill out, and as the page had a bit of moonspeak on it, most people simply assumed it was legit in hopes that Sega had plans to bring us something wonderful. Well, someone had plans alright, but it wasn't Sega.

As it turns out, Sega doesn't even own the domain Dreamcast.com anymore, and somebody's got their filthy, blaspheming mitts on whatever information you might have given out. If you're among those unfortunate enough to have been duped by this scam, you may want to stop by DVDDesign's blog for tips on how to rid yourself of the HIVs.

Now that we have that out of the way, I would like to put out an APB on whomever hatched this evil plot and sullied the good name of my console. If found, please take him into custody and deliver him to Retroforce headquarters, so that I may stomp repeatedly on his throat.

I don't know, but my love for Dreamcast is akin to Topher's.

Damn, and I went and entered both my social security number AND all of my credit card numbers. I wondered why a gaming company would need them...

man I think this has been one of the biggest gaming hoax ever... and brilliantly done. Somehow they used all medias (digg, reddit, delicious) and gaming blogs to spread the word...

I almost registered mine but the site was down... thank mr. G.O.D.

Congrats Dtoid on not falling for it like Kotaku. I was reading their story over on their site and I was laughing my ass off haha. What a bunch of dbags for falling for that, getting all excited and writing about it. I figured it wasn't nothing, why would Sega do something for the 10th Anniversary of the Dreamcast. I mean I know it was a kickass console, but you have to understand how hard it would be to bring a console back. If anything happens on the 10th anniversary, it will be from the fans, not from Sega.

thank god that I'm a procrastinator...

Also, shame on those that would exploit people's love for the Dreamcast! I don't believe in hell, but I'll start if it means these people will go there!

The only info they asked for was an email address and the console serial number. Not much you can do with either other than spam the email.

Hey look, its my blog! I was kinda hoping for a slightly better way of being linked on the front page but never mind.

Why the fuck would Sega abandon the domain anyway? I mean, it only costs like $10 a year for a domain name. I'm sure they could throw $100 away just to keep the name so people wouldn't do this kind of shit.

I thought that site looked fishy. It didn't seem particularly official and I thought it was strange that the bottom of the main page said "PAID ADVERTISEMENT"--although that may have been a glitch due to my ad blocking software. However, I didn't enter my info because I thought it might be a scam. Glad I made that decision.

@digitaldemigod

All they have to do is let it lapse (maybe accidentally) and then someone else picks it up real quick. They don't need to necessarily abandon the thing

Some people are on the look out for these sort of sites.
