Hunted's pre-order items revealed, are all over the place photo

inXile's third-person action dungeon crawler-y thing, Hunted: The Demon's Forge, isn't out until next year. But that's not stopping the game's publisher, Bethesda Softworks, from dropping a slew of pre-order items all over North American consumers right now.

As is becoming the norm with these types of things, figuring out what you get and where you get it requires its own Prima Strategy guide, because it's all over the place. There's the "Darkset" pack, and you get that from GameStop. Then there's the "Griffin" pack, and you get that from Best Buy. The "Demon" pack (my favorite, in name, of the bunch) you get from Amazon.com and Direct2Drive. Or you know, order from Walmart (in store or online) or get the game from Steam, you'll get the "Assassin" pack.

What do you get in each pack? Bosses, weapons, armor, skins, artifacts… oh my! Keep reading and take notes -- you wouldn't want to make the wrong choice. You can just purchase four copies of the game, each from a different retailer, right?

The "Darkset" pack - GameStop and GamStop.com

  • Caddoc’s Darkset Armor – exclusive shoulder armor for Caddoc
  • Caddoc’s Darkset  Axe & Shield – exclusive Darkset Axe and Shield used by Caddoc
  • E’lara’s Darkset Armor –exclusive magical artifact which improves E’lara’s magical abilities
  • E’lara’s Darkset Light Sword –  exclusive Darkset Light Sword used by E’lara

The "Griffin" pack - Best Buy and BestBuy.com

  • Caddoc’s Griffin Bracer – exclusive magical artifact which improves Caddoc’s magical abilities
  • Caddoc’s Griffin Maw Crossbow –  exclusive crossbow used by Caddoc
  • E’lara Griffin Hide Armor –exclusive armor used by E’lara
  • E’lara’s Griffin Claw Bow –  exclusive repeating bow used by E’lara

The "Demon" pack - Amazon.com and Direct2Drive

  • Demon Boss–Demon boss unlocked in Crucible
  • Demon Level – Demon boss level unlocked in Crucible
  • Annuvin – Annunvin character skin unlocked after completing the campaign
  • Notch Axe – Caddoc’s notch axe unlocked

The "Assassin" pack - Walmart, Walmart.com, Steam

  • Assassin Boss – Assassin boss unlocked in Crucible
  • Assassin Level – Assassin boss level unlocked in Crucible
  • Seriphine – Seriphine character skin unlocked after completing the campaign
  • Assassin Bow – E’lara’s Assassin bow unlocked

I saw a lot of this at QuakeCon, but didn't actually get to play it (lines for Brink and all).

From what I saw, it looked pretty good, although the camera angle sometimes looked a bit weird.

What's up with that notch axe, it looks like it consists of at least six separate blades. Talk about overkill.

These better come out as fucking DLC down the road. Im not going to buy the same god damned game 2 times to get the levels and bosses.

Its only a matter of time they start dividing entire games between retailers: buy at amazon get the first 3 levels, go to gamestop and get the other 4

... the game sounds good but I wish they had done something more unique with the character design rather than the standard overmuscled "tank" character male, and the over-sexified, under-attired range fighter for the female.

If it's like Diablo, I'm in.

Griffin pack is, umm, sexy.

I remain skeptical about this game. The videos I watched on the dashboard showcase some pretty choppy animation. I just don’t believe the title will be as smooth and “realtime” as they (devs) would have us believe. I would love a great new hack’n’slash, but I think this one may leave me wanting still….where’s the updated coverage for Kingdom Under Fire II? BlueSide’s grown uncomfortably quiet.

This kind of marketing plan is a border line scam in my book. As someone said soon whole parts of the games will be retailer exclusive gimmicks. This kind of stuff really needs to be stopped.

I hope the ECA would step-up and get involved in developing a set of standards for publishers and developers regarding marketing programs.
