Huge Super Smash Bros. Brawl news: Brand new sidescrolling action adventure photo

This is news too large for our weekly Smash Bros. Dojo roundup. Visitors to the Dojo today will read of Super Smash Bros. Brawl: The Subspace Emissary, a brand new single player experience for the upcoming Wii fighter. While there have been paltry single player modes before, this promises to be a fully fleshed out, standalone game in its own right, bringing together the Nintendo universe in one story.

The Adventure mode also emphasizes character development. You’ll see many famous characters persevering under the weight of their personal histories, shouldering their unique burdens... It’s really something you won’t see anywhere else.

With so many wonderful characters appearing together, it’s like a dream action game. We’re putting tons of fighting spirit into making this game, so I hope you’re all looking forward to it.

A dream action game. Those are high words to live up to, but just lumping so many nostalgic characters together for one adventure  will be enough for most people. So tell me, Destructoid, are you excited for this? Has this made Super Smash Bros. Brawl all the more appealing, or is it disposable fluff? Enquiring minds want to know.

Well, if Nintendo PROMISES to not have some half-assed single player mode, I better go reserve three copies right now!

This is awesome news! It's going to be even better than I hoped for. It won't suck because HAL are one of the best developers in the industry.

I'm still mad over Ike's likely replacement of Marth...I'm going to sulk for a little while.

Considering that they've had sidescrolling levels starting way back in the original game, I'm not surprised they'd eventually try and make them a major element.

I second the "As long as it's not half-assed" notion.

Is anyone else extremely nervous about the lack of information for online plans on this game?

I remember that awful phase when Reggie was skirting around the possibility that Metroid Prime Corruption would have multiplayer. I love Metroid's single player, so I'm not really complaining. It just irks me that online was alluded to for it to get our hopes up. Nintendo certainly didn't do anything to squash the rumors until recently.

Nothing came out of E3 about Smash being online. Meanwhile Reggie was boasting about how great it would be to play Mario Kart online next year.

Is this just paranoia or do we have something to worry about? Is this beefed-up single player a way of placating us?

Oh god, don't care. If they come out with 20 more games that are supposed to be system sellers, I'll consider the wii.

December third needs to be a national holiday. No one who owns a Wii should be going to work or doing anything other than playing smash the entire following week anyway.

As far as the side-scrolling adventure goes, it may be a nice way to waste some downtime, but for me its all about the multiplayer experience.

@Tristero: I pray every night for some hint of online functionality. They can't in their right mind release a game like this without online play.

SeraphX don't whine about Marth. I used to play Ness & Pikachu in SSB and look what happened to them in Melee. I don't even want to start with Kirby, but hey why shouldn't the cheap guy with the sword that nobody in America really about not be replaced by a more known Fire Emblem character? Honestly all characters haven't been announced anyway. Who knows he might still make or maybe Ike will be really similar.

The single player, if done right and it does keep the peeps with their own storyline in tact, will be a big bonus. To anyone who remotely remembers reading any of my previous post (ie no one), I'm the big fan of King of Fighters. I think it's the best fighting game series ever because the story with each character stayed true, new characters blended well, and everything that was put together was so fluid you'd thing they were together from the get-go. While others were playing Street Fighter and Tekken, I was happy at my NeoGeo machine playing KoF. All that, and it was a great fighter by itself as well!

As for the online portion, I have a feeling that Tristero's fears will come true. If this is something to destract us from online possibilities, then that would blow big time. I'm pretty sure the game will sell out nonetheless, but a big dissapointment like that might prevent future games from being as lucky.

@Jim Sterling - Online as in "5415685214788963 wins?" Greetings from a fellow dour English gent, good to see our shitty little island can still spawn gamers with taste from time to time.

I could never get into Smash bros, I felt like I was missing something when I played it. I was absolutely pathetic at it though, which goes a long way to explaining why it didn't sit right with me. The same friends who loved Smash Bros also hated Soul Calibur, my personal favourite fighter. Different strokes I guess.

If the single player mode is good, I will definitely buy this game! I owned both the N64 and the Gamecube and never purchased a Smash game. My reasons were primarily because I don't care for single-player fighters and it's hard at my age, and in my profession, to find people to play games with locally.

But, an action game with a huge cast on Nintendo characters?? Sign me up! Especially if Ness is involved and I'll finally get to revisit some Earthbound locales. EARTHBOUND!!

This game was already going to be the best game ever and they are continuing to add things that are going to make it even better. If I didn't have one I would buy a wii specifically for this game, online multiplayer or not.

So far this game just keeps getting better and better. This is the type of stuff i'd like to see go into fighting games! It's no secret that fighting games in general have been getting stale and the genre has been on a rapid decline. Props to nintendo for trying to bring something refreshing to the genre and making a game that is fun,but does not require memorization of long intricate combos.

I wasn't going to get it due to the lack of online, but if it has a decent single player than I might pick it up. On the same TV multiplayer really wouldn't do much for me in this game as I rarely have people over, and even more rarely Smash Bros. fans.

@Tristero

I freaked out about that too during the Ninty press conference. I kept mentioning it and people kept ignoring me, QQing about Wii Fit.

I have yet to preorder the game specifically because I'm not sure if it has online or not.

I have heard that IGN has confirmed online, but I won't believe it until it's on the DOJO!!. Our best bet is that the announcement at the end of September is that Smash will be online, and that Prime 3 will get an online update.

Yeah, it looks alright. I'm a bit more worried about online though, to be honest. Nintendo were really enthusiastic about it a couple years ago but have since gone mum on the subject, not saying one way or the other. That's the only reason I'd be buying this game to begin with; The game looks great and all, but I've never played Smash Bros before and a game with the same capabilites as its last-gen counterpart wouldn't exactly make me jump ship. Kinda gettin' worried about this...

Nice fancy words which basically describe an updated version of the side scrolling game from Melee.

Brawl will be great but c'mon, this is secondary school try and make up stuff on the bus journey to school because you didn't do your homework. In other words, they've been given the job of revealing snippets of the game until launch, they're going to have to milk it and go into blag mode, for example:

A screenshot of Mario jumping, "This jump represents the hopes and dreams of all brawl fighters, you have never experienced a jump like this, not only can you jump but you can now jump with pride and honour." That's monday's update covered then.

Maybe I'm just a Ninitendophile but I came after watching the little video.

I might be stuck in the past, but if this game lacked online multiplayer it wouldn't break it for me. I mean if its a kick ass game even with average fighting game single player and no online capabilities, its still a kick ass game. I'm not at the point where online capabilities are the main purchasing point for game, despite how some people seem to live by it.

If you don't get this game just because it doesn't have online (which it won't), you are a bit sad. Find 3 friends and invite them to your home, the ping is way better anyway.
