Rumor explosion: HD Wii 2 / Stream / Project Cafe photo

Update:  The system is now rumored to be called Stream.

The rumors concerning a new HD console from Nintendo have ramped up to absurd proportions, to the point where it's getting difficult to keep track of everything.

Some of the rumors sound like total BS, while some are more sensible. Here's loads of them, so make your own mind up:

  • Square Enix, Capcom, Sega, Konami, Activision, Rockstar/Take Two, Electronic Arts, Namco and Ubisoft have development kits, and all have at least one game in the works.
  • Nintendo may not launch with any first party games, as it plans to really support third parties this time.
  • It won't have "Wii" in its name.
  • Third party support extends to hardware, with a better storage solution being developed.
  • Better download service.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword may launch at the same time as Project Cafe. This could lead to another Twilight Princess situation.
  • Hideo Kojima has been mentioned in conjunction with the system.
  • Retro is working on a title that "everybody wants." It's been suggested that it could be Eternal Darkness 2.
  • A Resident Evil game is in the works (when isn't one in the works?)
  • A StarFox title is being worked on.
  • Grand Theft Auto V will be a Project Cafe title in addition to everything else.
  • A mockup was discovered and posted to 4chan (see gallery).

Following this rumored leak IGN created this mock of what the system might look like:

Many of these latest rumors come from Gameolosophy, but similar or corroborative rumors have been popping up on other sites as well. A lot of the rumors make it sound almost too good, so don't get overexcited, but the sheer volumeof gossip seems to suggest that the system itself is a real thing, even if its features may not be quite so amazing as rumor would have you believe.

Guess we just need to wait and see!

Surely that couldn't be true?

^--oh it could. Look at the 3DS, even there they DID have first party games, but made sure they weren't heavy hitters that would interfere with other games at launch. They might just not launch with any must have first party games.

As for the system, I wanna say we'll see it at E3, but not in stores until 2012. It would be too difficult for them to compete with themselves at christmas, with the 3DS having just launched.

I still think Wiimotes will be fully compatible with the thing. Nintendo isn't likely to discard that casual cash cow they've picked up.

If only one of these rumours turns out to be true please oh great Gods of gaming let it be Zelda SS in HD.

Also that mock up looks like a bag of smashed assholes. I hope that one doesn't come true.

Other than the 4Chan mock-up (because it's 4Chan) none of those sound absurd at all. In fact I'd be a surprised if any of them weren't true.

The only one I think anyone can question is not launching with any first-party titles but it's totally possible. With the exception of Pilotwings Nintendo did their best to pull a similar move with the 3DS for the same reasons.

The Skyward Sword thing I totally saw coming and it's almost upsetting that a system with so much alleged power will be housing a Wii port as it's first Zelda title (I really want to see a Zelda game tailored for the Café) but it does mean I can play it with a traditional analog gamepad. And the touchscreen of course but that doesn't bother me much.

Star Fox being made makes sense. Nintendo is really tapping hard into bringing back franchises everyone wants. We have a new Kid Icarus for craps sake.

That said my guess for the Retro title is another Prime. Don't think it's another Eternal Darkness but, again, at this point looking back at the 3DS unveiling it could be anything.

GTA V I think almost has to be true, I wouldn't be surprised if they outsourced the online capabilities to make it more competitive with Sony and MS, not having Wii in the title is a little weird but nothing shocking, Hideo is kind of a god when it comes to pushing hardware so having him on as a consultant from a software standpoint makes sense (he also has so much experience with blu-ray).

I mean, yeah. Remember the 3DS announcement? A lot of that pre-E3 sounded too good to he true and lo and behold it was all true.

Call me naive but I have faith in all of these rumors. Except 4Chan. Because 4Chan.

Has Nintendo finally grasped how the industry has been operating for the past decade?

Most importantly: Blu Ray?

Sounds good.. except for The lack of first party support, that might create another 3ds launch scenario, but that mock up looks like a gamecube controller with a screen and xbox buttons.

I'm kinda confused about the whole Zelda thing. It seems like they're really pushing the 1:1 motion control, with enemies that can only be damaged if attacked in a certain direction and whatnot. How would that work with a traditional (sort of) gamepad? Would you swipe on the touch-screen or something?

I dunno...personally I think I just want Skyward Sword to be Wii-exclusive, and then a brand new title build from the ground-up for the new console, that can take advantage of all these supposed superpowers it'll have.

If they do the same thing with Skyward Sword that they did with Twilight Princess I'll be so mad. "Hey, you know that Wii you own and how you've been waiting for Skyward Sword to come out on it? Well now it's getting the inferior version, LOL!".

As long as Skyward Sword comes out on the Wii, I'll be happy. I don't buy a new console until it has at least a dozen or so games I know I want to play for it, but at the same time I'm antsy for some new Zelda action.

Being Nintendo I will not fall for the hype and lower my expectations to the point that I will not expect a good console, so when they reveal it it will excite me.

"Has Nintendo finally grasped how the industry has been operating for the past decade?"

No, they still make consistent profits, every year. When will they start launching overpriced consoles that still lose them money for the first several years? The 3DS is a bit overpriced, but still profitable, indicating that while they are taking lessons from how "the industry has been operating for the past decade", they have much to learn. Maybe the next version of the 3DS will lose the ability to play 3DS games, ala PSP Go.

Am I the only one bored by these rumors? Until there is something "real" can we be spared the daily wii successor rumors on the front page? This is starting to get as bad as the daily "3DS is a failure/overwhelming success" stories several weeks ago.

Nothing really unexpected here. A lot of this would fall under the "no-brainer" category. We need something controversial!

I did laugh at the idea that "a better storage solution" is being developed. Probably a good idea, that.

Saying that it has got a "better download service" isn't saying much. It's kind of impossible to create a system with a "worse download service".

I'm a bit skeptical about a day-one purchase of this for me, after not being impressed with the 3DS that much. But I really do like the fact that so many companies are already working with this.

And honestly, I'd be fine with Skyward Sword being in HD, but doesn't that mean they WOULD be doing at least one first-party launch title?

I can imagine that that Project Cafe will be backwards compatible with Wii and GameCube and hopefully should be able to spruce up the graphics for software of those systems! I'm hyped, all Nintendo really need to pay attention is a really good and nimble online experience, First party support with titles like Metal Gear Solid 5, Grand Theft Auto 5 and finally they need few good exclusive titles like Super Mario Galaxy 3 and Kid Icarus HD!!

If they delay Skyward Sword to coincide with the launch of Project Cafe, I am going to be so pissed. I mean, the Wii has way too much first party support right now, amirite?

But I'm really stoked to think that Retro will be developing a new Eternal Darkness. After seeing what they've done with Metroid and Donkey Kong, I am of the opinion that they should immediately be given control of all of Nintendo's franchises.

Depending on who you ask it's generally considered that the GameCube version of Twilight Princess is the better version. So I don't know where you get the idea thatthe Wii version of Skyward Sword will be inferior unless you really need your Wii visuals upscaled that bad.

So there will be no first party software at launch, but Skyward Sword will be a launch title. Both of those rumours cannot be true. Also, Skyward Sword is "mostly done" by this point and all of the rumoured projections of this next console launch are 2012 and given the disparity between the rumoured hardware and the Wii's specs I simply don't see it happening. Everything else is mostly just software gossip which doesn't sound too far out there.

While this all is cool and all, I just really don't know what to do cause I figured that all of this would happen on the wii and it flat out didn't.

So I feel like nintendo owes me somthing, like the new system cause the wii was not teribly great it had its moments but right now they are all at lost to rumors of this new system and I felt that I bought the sega saturn and now sega saying oh sorry that last system was a mistake we are putting out a better one that you will have to buy again sorry!

So you could see how I am sort of pissed off at nintendo for putting me through this, I hope the new system is cheep since it is running basically off of the 360 hardware it better cost $200 or less cause I do not have the money to pay more than that again for a new nintendo system.

Zelda rumer smells like bullshit. Several interviews have said they wanted Skyward Sword built from the ground-up for the Wii. Miyamoto even admitted he didn't like how limited the implementation of the Wiimote felt in Twilight Princess and wanted to really capitalize on it with Skyward Sword.

I don't think anyone wants or cares about a sequel to Eternal Darkness. It was a fun experiment, but not a very memorable game. It wasn't terribly scary, either. Retro's probably working on another Metroid game given fans really like their take on Metroid better.

Anyway, this all sounds way too good to be true. Hell, I'd still be happy even if only half of these rumors were true. A new StarFox would especially make my day, not to mention what Retro and Hideo Kojima could possibly be working on.
