With a video game, you have a cardboard box or a plastic case, and you're locking away everything that makes the thing worth having in the first place. If I bought this collection I'd be opening every sealed item just to see everything inside. I definitely wouldn't though, even if I had that sort of disposable income. I'd rather have a variety of great things than a vast collection of one style of thing.
I mean, unless I'm missing something, he has only 79 items on here. Even if we assume that, on average, they're worth 100 each.. that's 7900 dollars. And, honestly, I really don't see most of these being worth 100 dollars. Only newer games are sealed, which wouldn't make much of a difference as many of them are still buyable new. Also, I don't think many of these games are terribly rare. I mean, come on, these are FINAL FANTASY games people! None of these (with a few rare exceptions) had limited production lines....
I guess you could say that, perhaps, some of the big ticket items could bump up the value. But, honestly, I basically see the PS2, the GameCube, the cell phone, and maybe a few of the collector's editions as being it. Some of those are certainly worth more than 100 on average, but I really don't think they make up for the fact that most of this stuff just isn't going to be terribly valuable.
On top of everything else: people don't want to buy a bulk purchase and pay the same price they would for individual items.
I'd say this would probably sell for under 10k and would certainly sell for under 6k. I just don't see it selling where it is now, but I guess a big enough FF fan with enough money could make this happen regardless.
Unless you value the convinience of not having to trawl through akihabara's underbelly at about 5-7K that is, I guess... someone with more money than time (or sense) will probably buy-it-now.
you do know that despite the titles selling at that original price(back when they were release) the reason why the prices are high is because of rarity
seriously some of these are impossible to find(even in ebay)nowadays so it's kinda expected for prices to jack high.
though this guy is probably stupid for selling all of these. i would NEVER EVER sell this kind of rare games no matter how high the price is. i don't know maybe im just too fond of my collection. the only games that i have sold so far are sports game(PS2) used that i already have new conditions of, and games that already have a expansion to(SFIV still i regretted selling it though) will sell SSFIV for SSFIV AE soon.
though if he's in need for some cash i guess it's fine.
Still, who knows. It'll only take one.
@PrinceHeir: I guess some of these items are particularly valuable, but I still don't see 15k total here. Also, just because something is highly rare doesn't make it highly valuable. I mean, people are going to have to be willing to spend 200 dollars an item here on average. That's a lot of dough to shed out on a single collector's item.. much less 79. I'd say about 80% of the value of this collection is probably spread over about a fourth of the content. For that fourth, maybe we're talking 400-500 for the pricey items and maybe 250 an item on average. That gets us back to around 7000 total value.
As for your other points, I agree. I have a minor little collection, and I'd rather not sell any of it.
Point is, I would like to think that my own collection, arranged in exhaustive, perfect, OCD-driven order across numerous bookshelves, is worth a small fortune. But the truth is that the value of games, even sealed and mint condition, usually depreciate. If I ever wanted to sell all my stuff (and I won't) I doubt I could recoup what I paid for my collection.
I can't find any pricing on the PS3. There are two listings of it on ebay for 800, but neither has sold. In fact, no FF PS3 console has sold on ebay. Let's say it's probably worth somewhere in the range of 400-700. Even that combined with FF MSX gets us nowhere near anything resembling 15k.
