If you're around the same age as myself or any other gamer that's been exposed to the industry since the 80s, then you're well aware that video game television shows suck major balls. Sure, there are a few gems here and there, but for the most part they tend to insult us and aim for the lowest common denominator.
Now, seeing as how the Destructoid community is one of the savviest groups around, I thought it'd be appropriate to ask you how you'd build the best video game television show. What elements would you want to see in there? What sort of "attitude" should the show have? Would you want to see a daily show or just a weekly round-up? Got good ideas, we'd like to hear them ... because you never know what's on the horizon here at Destructoid. *wink wink*

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Then, have the hosts talk about the video games and play parts of the game.
No bathroom humor. No sexist jokes. No jokes. Report news, offer discussion panels with professionals... Meet The Press with video games. Its so completely the opposite from the extremely goofy (and getting goofier) way magazines, blogs, and tv shows cover games now.
I can't blame people for tuning in to that stuff, because I like a good laugh too, but you'll notice the New York Times Book review never has a photo of someone on the toilet to augment their coverage. You want to talk about non-gamers taking games seriously, we have to start doing it first.
It also needs anyone who thinks MTV has style to stay far, far away.
This is something I've been developing for the past few seasons. A show that incorporates what mature gamers are interested in. Relevants topics mixed with various content we all love and can't deny is a guilty pleasure.
We all know there are sponsors out there that would jump on the opportunity, my research knows this too. Currently I work in TV and Film, so I know that funding abounds for this kind of show. Be it weekly, bi weekly or daily, it's all about the content, delivery and personality that will make it work.
Your community and involvement in the industry has already made a huge impact on anyone that's between the ages of 17(next gen proliferates and virgins) to 45(for the mud lovers and business executive types). Tailoring a show to accomodate these groups is just waiting to happen.
As much as I love to catch an episode of AotS, it isn't enough for every consumer.
Contact asap if you guys are serious about this kind of show. If not, good luck!
after midnight i have the tv on all night but i dont watch anything special, cuz nothing special is on. it could be 10 hours of tbs or infomercials or maybe ill loop a movie 4 or 5 times in a row. there needs to be a gaming channel that's not afraid to run a ten hour speed run one night, followed by live video feed following a top world of warcraft guild on raid night.
oh yah, and it needs Dtoid in it 24/7 :)
Hitting up gaming journalists is KEY and having game developers is also important to give creditability to the show.
Humor, Attack of the Show (IMO) with Kevin and Olivia really make the show have some sort of SPARK that makes viewers enjoy what they are talking about. If you watch gametrailers on spike you just feel dry after even if they offered some decent news.
Also I think the show has to have a daily format. News after a few days just seems old in the gaming industry. AotS’s loop segment yesterday just seemed out of touch after discussing the black Xbox. That was so old!
I think for a gaming news show to really make it big it has to be aimed for the hardcore fan base, otherwise it will be watered down and the fans won’t want to watch it. AKA X-play.
The reason podcasts are so popular is because they travel with the listener and require possibly the least amount of effort on the part of said listener.
TV shows have to be loud, bright, stylish affairs because otherwise they WILL be insulting low-rent atrocities. You either get Wayne's World from some hyper-active kid's basement or you get some slick tying-way-too-hard-to-be-cool mess.
G4TV loses its core audience because of the built-in cynicism of the gaming public. It is far too easy to see through the veil of hipness, into the sad fact that WATCHING games -- not as fun as it sounds.
Personally, I like Gametrailers.com because there are little snippets of exactly what you came to see, be it gameplay footage, reviews, previews, what-have-you. You get in and you get out in under ten minutes before the personality becomes too grating. Like a good date.
So, if you're gonna do it, make it concise, professional, and for the love of Odin don't make me sit through 22 minutes of repugnant smarm.
I don't think I'd go for a daily show, because I think the amount of content that worth putting up on television can most likely fill a weekly show. If it was daily, they'd probably have to end up reading the headlines off the blogs.
Just stay the crap away from this "xtreme" style of program that went out of style a decade ago, but people are too god damned out of touch to ditch it, with crooked camera angles, zooming in on the hosts face, with neon graphics that look like they've been designed by skateboard companies.
Us Nerds are Elitists, If it's not done by us then its automatically fails
For those of you who need proving that gaming tv can be done right, you need go no further than consolevania.
The thing I would most like in a video game show is something akin to some of the podcasts in that you have a special guest from the video game industry on the show.
And I dont mean have this guest for just a 3 minute segment, let him/her appear throughout the broadcast and give their opinions on certain games, previews, industry practices, or whatever you are covering.
but the key to the show is Tommy Tallarico.
Calls in would be cool. Maybe user content like videos or something.
Video Game News show that covers all the news from the day before or something.
GOOD HOSTS AND NO GARBAGE.
And keep it about video games - no recaps of The Hills or American Idol.
A video game quiz show would be awesome - like Beat the Geeks but with video game trivia.
I think I'm the only one who likes X-Play. However, it does not fill the gaming television void.
Revchu said it best: don't use that "xtreme" style that was only cool maybe the first time it was used more than a decade ago. And also don't use man-children as hosts. And don't assume your audience is comprised of only straight boys. Girls and gays play games too. It'd be cool to see a show that is respectable and intelligent but funny at the same time. I think you guys are capable of something like this. Make it so!!
Nothing better than a group of people sitting around in a room, talking about what's going on, what isn't, and what sucks for a good hour or so..no prepackaged style, just being yourself works better than any marketing ploy.
Videogame television through the corporate filter is just not possible. That's why most (all) of the stuff on cable is pure shit. Corporations will never, EVER truly fund unfettered, uncensored commentary.
Ever.
I mean take that Summa clip yesterday... the topics were all bullshit, corporate shovelware. The Apple TV? The Elite 360? Why would I want to watch ANYONE opine on those non-topics in 10-second soundbites? It's like watching a bank tellar talk about corn flakes or fabric softener.
And they think if they put a pretty face up there telling us about that fabric softener, somehow like chimpanzees, we will sit attentively in front of the screen.
Nobody.
Likes.
Commercials.
In fact, we hate them.
Well.
These guys are in exactly the same boat.
Channel 101 will let you do anything, Acceptable.TV won't

Consider that the entire success of Destructoid is uncensored user contribution and community. All of the above is antithetical to the corporate paradigm. It can't be done.
Ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever.
EH-ver.
All they ever do is yap around their NDAs about the "great new stuff coming up they wish they could talk about."
Fuck that.
M. Net (Mister Net), on Musique Plus (Quebec's MTV).
I haven't been there in months but I'm pretty sure it's still on...
The host also has a blog: http://www.denis-talbot.com/
It's a daily show (Mon-Thu) with the "best moments" on the weekend.
IT IS POSSIBLE!
