How would you develop the ultimate video game television show? photo

If you're around the same age as myself or any other gamer that's been exposed to the industry since the 80s, then you're well aware that video game television shows suck major balls. Sure, there are a few gems here and there, but for the most part they tend to insult us and aim for the lowest common denominator.

Now, seeing as how the Destructoid community is one of the savviest groups around, I thought it'd be appropriate to ask you how you'd build the best video game television show. What elements would you want to see in there? What sort of "attitude" should the show have? Would you want to see a daily show or just a weekly round-up? Got good ideas, we'd like to hear them ... because you never know what's on the horizon here at Destructoid. *wink wink*

Shows now try too hard to look like a real television show. Just shoot for a Siskel and Ebert (cause Roeper sucks) style review show, cept remove the fake movie theater setup and the movie previews, and instead have your best friend's dingy basement apartment with the odd stains and unwashed dishes (maybe even include that piece of pizza stuck to the wall).
Then, have the hosts talk about the video games and play parts of the game.

This may be the exact opposite of destructoid, but I'd love to see some cover it and be SERIOUS.

No bathroom humor. No sexist jokes. No jokes. Report news, offer discussion panels with professionals... Meet The Press with video games. Its so completely the opposite from the extremely goofy (and getting goofier) way magazines, blogs, and tv shows cover games now.

I can't blame people for tuning in to that stuff, because I like a good laugh too, but you'll notice the New York Times Book review never has a photo of someone on the toilet to augment their coverage. You want to talk about non-gamers taking games seriously, we have to start doing it first.

It needs Adam Sessler.

It also needs anyone who thinks MTV has style to stay far, far away.

Hey guys. I made a post about this kind of thing in the forums awhile back, but I'd be happy to reiterate.
This is something I've been developing for the past few seasons. A show that incorporates what mature gamers are interested in. Relevants topics mixed with various content we all love and can't deny is a guilty pleasure.
We all know there are sponsors out there that would jump on the opportunity, my research knows this too. Currently I work in TV and Film, so I know that funding abounds for this kind of show. Be it weekly, bi weekly or daily, it's all about the content, delivery and personality that will make it work.
Your community and involvement in the industry has already made a huge impact on anyone that's between the ages of 17(next gen proliferates and virgins) to 45(for the mud lovers and business executive types). Tailoring a show to accomodate these groups is just waiting to happen.
As much as I love to catch an episode of AotS, it isn't enough for every consumer.

Contact asap if you guys are serious about this kind of show. If not, good luck!

fuck "show" - it's gotta be a video game channel. news updates in morning, afternoon, and night - webcam hour shows of live raids in azeroth, weekly starcraft tournaments, weekly tours of developer studios, strategy guide shows, pimp my console shows, speed rush shows, and 2d and 3d program tutorials.

after midnight i have the tv on all night but i dont watch anything special, cuz nothing special is on. it could be 10 hours of tbs or infomercials or maybe ill loop a movie 4 or 5 times in a row. there needs to be a gaming channel that's not afraid to run a ten hour speed run one night, followed by live video feed following a top world of warcraft guild on raid night.

oh yah, and it needs Dtoid in it 24/7 :)

I'd like to see a show that mixed reality show and game development. Basically, you get the rock star game designers. Cliffy B, David Jaffee, Will Wright, and have them come up with the ultimate game and then film the creation, testing, and ship. Afterwards, we all get to buy and play it.

I think the best way to really do a video game show has to be like EG. Where the viewers have a lot of call in time. The reviews maybe bias at times but the viewers will straighten them out! Adult content is needed IMO to really give it a fun flavor to the show otherwise it will be just another X-play.

Hitting up gaming journalists is KEY and having game developers is also important to give creditability to the show.

Humor, Attack of the Show (IMO) with Kevin and Olivia really make the show have some sort of SPARK that makes viewers enjoy what they are talking about. If you watch gametrailers on spike you just feel dry after even if they offered some decent news.

Also I think the show has to have a daily format. News after a few days just seems old in the gaming industry. AotS’s loop segment yesterday just seemed out of touch after discussing the black Xbox. That was so old!

I think for a gaming news show to really make it big it has to be aimed for the hardcore fan base, otherwise it will be watered down and the fans won’t want to watch it. AKA X-play.

"How"? You don't.
The reason podcasts are so popular is because they travel with the listener and require possibly the least amount of effort on the part of said listener.
TV shows have to be loud, bright, stylish affairs because otherwise they WILL be insulting low-rent atrocities. You either get Wayne's World from some hyper-active kid's basement or you get some slick tying-way-too-hard-to-be-cool mess.
G4TV loses its core audience because of the built-in cynicism of the gaming public. It is far too easy to see through the veil of hipness, into the sad fact that WATCHING games -- not as fun as it sounds.
Personally, I like Gametrailers.com because there are little snippets of exactly what you came to see, be it gameplay footage, reviews, previews, what-have-you. You get in and you get out in under ten minutes before the personality becomes too grating. Like a good date.
So, if you're gonna do it, make it concise, professional, and for the love of Odin don't make me sit through 22 minutes of repugnant smarm.

First of all, keep the douchebags off the air. The hosts that aren't total jackasses are very few and far between.

I don't think I'd go for a daily show, because I think the amount of content that worth putting up on television can most likely fill a weekly show. If it was daily, they'd probably have to end up reading the headlines off the blogs.

Just stay the crap away from this "xtreme" style of program that went out of style a decade ago, but people are too god damned out of touch to ditch it, with crooked camera angles, zooming in on the hosts face, with neon graphics that look like they've been designed by skateboard companies.

Similar to rainbowblack just said, the one thing they absolutely must have are nerds presenting it. They can be reasonably attractive and charismatic nerds, but they must be nerds none the less. A presenters personality comes through, and if their gaming experience is primarily fifa/madden and need for speed/gran turismo, they are just going to suck like a crate of ass.

For those of you who need proving that gaming tv can be done right, you need go no further than consolevania.

Like many others here, I would appreciate a show that tries to limit the stupid jokes and lame attitude, but Im not against a show trying to have fun and being a little lighthearted.

The thing I would most like in a video game show is something akin to some of the podcasts in that you have a special guest from the video game industry on the show.
And I dont mean have this guest for just a 3 minute segment, let him/her appear throughout the broadcast and give their opinions on certain games, previews, industry practices, or whatever you are covering.

Whatever you do, keep it a weekly show. Too much of a good thing is overkill, especially with video game related shows. A week give you plenty of material to round up for a decent show.

Get Tommy Tallarico to talk about video games again. Like judgement day, except it could be more like a "Daily show" type show. You know how the Daily show takes the government and gives it their spin/makes fun of them. You could take news announcements made by top video game people and make fun of it. and offer REAL gameplay, not just a review and opinions. Also maybe show some highlights of top league matches in Counterstrike and the such. possibly offer them as side info for people that want it. But like Gameboi said, keep it a weekly show at the most.

but the key to the show is Tommy Tallarico.

Review shows should be real people who actually played the game and wrote their own reviews on it. No bull - just real views on the games.
Calls in would be cool. Maybe user content like videos or something.
Video Game News show that covers all the news from the day before or something.
GOOD HOSTS AND NO GARBAGE.
And keep it about video games - no recaps of The Hills or American Idol.
A video game quiz show would be awesome - like Beat the Geeks but with video game trivia.

As Gameboi pointed out, keep it if anything weekly. Maybe if something earth shattering happens, 2 times a week but no more. You don't want to give people too much of a good thing and then have them get very tired of it. One week gives ample time to pick out the best news stories and in depth. Maybe talk about mods to make your system better (i.e: bigger harddirves, homebrew apps), industry BS, game reviews... and maybe have a special "Get to know your Editors better" which would be kinda like a day in the life sorta deal. There are lots of possibilities w/ this.

Seems like everyone agrees with solid hosts that aren't fake. There isn't a time in which I think Kevin Pereira is faking his love for games. Maybe he can just fool me, but I think thats the essential part of making one of these shows good. You must have REAL gamers, not some boobies that can speak well

Tommy Tallarico is a douche. Don't get him!

Revchu said it best: don't use that "xtreme" style that was only cool maybe the first time it was used more than a decade ago. And also don't use man-children as hosts. And don't assume your audience is comprised of only straight boys. Girls and gays play games too. It'd be cool to see a show that is respectable and intelligent but funny at the same time. I think you guys are capable of something like this. Make it so!!

If it's going to be a video game show...make it about video games, not the latest nut crushing video on the net or potato chips shaped like lincoln being sold on ebay. Real hosts who give a shit about gaming and the industry who are honest and not afraid to grab the friggin brass ring and shove it over their cocks. Sorry for the language but gaming television puts me off in a real bad way to see how it's handled in its current state. To pull it all off is not impossible it just needs to be handled by people who share the same passion gamers have. The people who stand hours in line to get the first console, the people who play a retro game twenty years later and smile just as big as the first time they set down with it. Intelligent gaming reviews given out by the people who actually played the game. Dtoid TV FTW! I would wholeheartedly support such an idea. I would even support a weekly video podcast hosted by the editors and would gladly pay a small fee to help fund it.

Victor Lucas is probably the only one to get it right so far. Don't condescend to the viewer and act like the audience are MTV retards. Tommy Tallarico gets a bum rap simply because he plays bad cop to Lucas on TV. I enjoy X-Play, but I consider it more of a gaming comedy show with reviews. Consolevania is pretty good stuff, but I seriously can only understand every fourth word of what they're saying. Silly Scotts.

The ultimate videogame show is simply eloquent and charasmatic GAMERS talking about games in an uncensored (therefore non-corporate) venue (i.e. the Internet).

Videogame television through the corporate filter is just not possible. That's why most (all) of the stuff on cable is pure shit. Corporations will never, EVER truly fund unfettered, uncensored commentary.

Ever.

I mean take that Summa clip yesterday... the topics were all bullshit, corporate shovelware. The Apple TV? The Elite 360? Why would I want to watch ANYONE opine on those non-topics in 10-second soundbites? It's like watching a bank tellar talk about corn flakes or fabric softener.

And they think if they put a pretty face up there telling us about that fabric softener, somehow like chimpanzees, we will sit attentively in front of the screen.

Nobody.

Likes.

Commercials.

In fact, we hate them.

I think they should create something along the same lines as Nick Arcade. I love that show. The only thing that I'd really change (aside from the overall presentation, as it's far too childish in its known form) is the questions and puzzles, as it's always bothered me that the questions are rarely video game-related. It's a video game show. The kids are supposed to be good at video games, and they're supposed to know a lot about video games. Why are you asking them geography questions?

In short, Summa, if someone of influence on your staff does not have the principles of Dan Harmon, your "show" will rise like so many other trial balloons and the stench of insincerity will quickly torpedo it as even your most loyal fans turn away in embarassment and disgust. Sure, you'll get paid for six months. You'll get to say you're "on TV." But in the end, no show and back to the Internets.

Consider that the entire success of Destructoid is uncensored user contribution and community. All of the above is antithetical to the corporate paradigm. It can't be done.

A show about gaming should cover all aspects of gaming. You cover the hot rumors for pc/console/arcades. Give your impressions on upcoming releases and follow that up with a review upon release to see how the games panned out. If possible, this should cover the importing scene as well as arcades. Try to work in coverage of the competitive gaming circuits. Don't just have a blurb about just the MLG because it's a huge commercial fed. Expand coverage to the likes of EVO, Tougeki, Quakecon, and all the other major scenes that you don't hear much about. You can have developer/industry talk about upcoming products. As stated before, modding/sustomization or pc/consoles should also be covered as people are doing amazing things with electronics. Viewer feedback is always something that will expand the show. It really boils down to the duration of a show as to how much content you can cover.
