How to make GBA games on your 3DS not look like ass photo

It was really nice of Nintendo to give us Ambassadors all of these free GBA games, but man, they looked all stretched and washed out. I remember these games being beautiful. Is my memory fading, or is it the 3DS pulling some funny sh*t?

It's the 3DS, of course. Nothing's wrong with the top screen, but something is up with how legacy games are stretched to fit it.

Here's the easy fix: Hold SELECT when starting a 3DS game. That's it! The system will change the display mode to show the title in its original resolution. This also works with Game Boy games, and the system displays a cute Game Boy frame graphic around your title.

The only drawback is that the original resolution is much smaller. Still, I'd rather enjoy the game in its non-stretched form.

Or you can play them on a emulator. My PSP GBA emulator is running smooth as silk and looks sexy as ever.

i actually like the stretch for some reason.

black bars can be distracting to be honest.

i play PS2 games on a component cable and they look awesome.

sure you see those jaggies but the picture and sound is much better than the the AV cables.

but it's all preferences.

thanks for the tip though :)

I know it's blasphemous, but I think I'm gonna use the stretched option. It's pretty washed out and fugly, but original resolution is just too small for me.

So you'd rather play it at GBA micro levels than at a viewable levels.

Okay...

Just tried it and Yoshi's Island looked sharper, but it looked lost in the middle of all that black :(

I take it the cute Game Boy screen wrap thing is only on the original games not the GBA Ambassador ones....

Dale, you forgot to mention this also works when playing DS games on a 3DS. I tried playing Pokemon White on my 3DS, and it looked terrible and pixelated, but the Select+Start trick made it look somewhat better...... If you have a 3DS and a DS, I'd recommend playing those DS games on your DS. It looks better there, and feels better anyways.

It's not as bright as it could be, but I way prefer the minimal stretch. You get used to it pretty quick.

this is a common issue things with a certain ress generally look better at there native ress than scaled up, this can be fixed by an image processor like on a tv or by having nice upscaling like a lot of emulators on the pc have but if there isnt something like that it will look worse.

Anyone who can play these games in that tiny resolution deserves some props. I think some of the games look worse stretched, but others, specifically Metroid: Fusion, looks so much butter in the higher resolution.

I actually didn't notice much of a difference, and tbh even knowing this I think Ima stick to the way it is right now, I think they're much more playable this way.

really don't understand all the pissing and moaning about the gba games... the games look FINE! I'm loving Minish Cap in all its stretched glory. People will bitch about the littlest things I swear...

I tried this trick yesterday and Fire Emblem, which I'm loving and never played before, is hard to play with that small a screen so I decided to keep it stretched so i can read what I'm doing. I thought the strecth would bother me but I honestly don't see the difference.

Any way to increase the brightness when playing GBA games? It automatically drops and there's no way I can see to change it.

I just popped out my original GBA and compared Fusion to it on 3DS and doing that trick actually makes it smaller then the original GBA aspect ratio. It's kind of hard to see the difference so I put red borders around the screen.

Jack8274: The PSP has the exact same problem. Actually, it's worse on the PSP! The PSP's screen is larger, but still not an integer multiple of the GBA's screen, so the 1:1 mode is even smaller.

I just re-edited that pic and put the new 3DS size on top of the old GBA size, and it's so much tinier.

I think he meant the original pixel ratio of the GBA onto the 3DS screen, which have smaller pixels and a larger screen.

So its the same exact thing you can do to make DS games look better if you wanted to?

Either way, I think the games look fine they way they are and I'd rather not stress that stupid flawed designed Select/Home/Start film they've decided to use over that section of the 3DS. My roommates' came out of the box new already sort of bubbled off towards the start button (as in if you look at it close you can see a gap where its bent off the framework, and if you take something like a toothpick you can push it down only to have it pop back up) and it really pisses me that they did that. Constantly afraid mine is going to do something like that.

... stretch is NOT an issue... i played GBA games on emulators so... that "looked all stretched and washed out" is fine by me

The original resolution on 3ds is about the size of GBA Micro's screen, I don't see the issue really, use whichever you like best.

Yeah I wrote that a little weird I was just trying to point out how much smaller it is now then what it originally looked like on GBA.

I've done nothing special and the GBA games on my 3DS already don't look like ass. Both Minish Cap and Yoshi's Island look beautiful as always, though Yoshi's is a little on the dim side and there's no brightness adjust. That's not what this troll-post is even claiming though, so.

Or you can not squint at your 3DS screen like an ass and have them as they are, totally fine.

What is wrong with you people!?!? Stop staring at it and PLAY THE DAMN GAME.

I don't have an SP or Micro so I can't compare them, but according to Wikipedia the The Vanilla GBA & Sp both have a 2.9 inch screen while the Micro is 2 inches.

How do you measure a screen? Lengthwise or diagonally?
I have a ruler...diagonally the screen size (playing mario vs donkey kong is 2 and 1/4 inches, while lengthwise is just under 2 inches.

Lengthwise is what the system specs usually used, but the 3ds is advertised using the diagonal measurement of 90 mm. lengthwise its 77mm

I have a feeling 3ds Could have pulled this off better. I've seen emulators run these games at larger than original resolutions without this much blur or color fade.

Is there no option to "scale but maintain aspect ratio"?

ie you would expand it vertically as far as possible, but not stretch it horizontally once you hit the top/bottom of the screen. Most video cards have that option, in case you are playing a game that doesn't support your screen's resolution.

@Jinx 01 The default mode does exactly what you said. Not sure why people are calling it stretch mode as the 3DS still maintains the GBA's aspect ratio when playing on the default mode.

If you look at the header image you can see the buildings in the background still look like perfect squares on both resolution modes, so aspect ratio isn't changed.

Everytime I emulated a GBA game, I'd play at 2x size option.

Not a single time did anyone say that looked bad. I did hear comments regarding x1 being a strain to read. I don't see why the same would apply to 3DS. Looks fine to me.
