How SimCity made me fall in love with Jazz photo

[Editor's Note: We're not just a (rad) news site -- we also publish opinions/editorials from our community & employees like this one, though be aware it may not jive with the opinions of Destructoid as a whole, or how our moms raised us. We all have our favorite videogame soundtracks that move us in indescribable ways. The ones that make your skin shivers and your head all numb from the head-knocking. Out of all the classical themes of Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and the chip-tuned rock anthems of Mega Man and Castlevania I have an unconditional love for a very particular soundtrack of a genre that is shamefully misrepresented in videogame music.

Realised in part by Jerry Martin, the SimCity 3000 soundtrack is one of my favorite jazz-flavored scores of all time. Combining both Jazz and New Age, it gives a strong urban vibe to the king of city management games and is a delight to the ears. Let’s dig in deeper beyond that suburbian transmission signal and see why I fell in love with Jazz because of SimCity

Ten years ago I bought one of my favorite games of all time. I still play SimCity 3000 Unlimited every now and then like any other classics in my collection. Creating huge metropolis, challenging myself with weird urban designs and landscapes, I’ve always been fascinated by Will Wright’s series from the very beginning. One of the best aspects of the game however is the music, vilely infused with pure post Hard-Bop era smooth-jazz and some cool New Age Electronica.

It took me a long time however to finally realize that I had this secret love for Jazz. Prior to two or three years ago I had no idea who John Coltrane or Miles Davis were yet at the same time I knew these songs and rhymns. I was familiar with the specific era of which I am now a huge devoted fan.

SimCity introduced me with it’s relaxed beats and sharp notes to one of the most prolific Jazz eras in the history of music. The Hard-Bop, Smooth-Jazz; Free-Jazz era of the 1950s and early 1970s were ground breaking years for the advancement of Jazz music. It was one of the most creative periods and spawned countless sessions and improvisations now revered for their masterful execution. This musical sophistication is greatly reflected in the SimCity 3000 soundtrack and in my opinion represents perfectly the vibe of this era.

However , how does it make it so great? I mean it’s just music right? Well not necessarily. The musical score of the game reflects a very strong urban feeling during the gameplay. Rather than having a modern type of musical representation (namely Hip-Hop), the composers decided that a classical rendition would provide a more accurate feel to the simulation. Cities like New York and Chicago have been built on Jazz and it’s culture. To put it simple, the soundtrack just feels right, it’s spot on on the vibe it wants to vehiculate and at the same time broadcasts a cultural milestone in modern urbanism.

The cherry of top is that most of the tracks on the retail release are available free here on EA’s website. If you like the soundtrack I could also direct you to some similar artists that greatly influenced the album such as: John Coltrane, Miles Davis (earlier work), Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Cannonball Adderley, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock and Dexter Gordon.

Jazz is worth being discovered by any genuine music lovers and one of the best ways to be introduced to the genre is to play SimCity 3000 like I did and taste this raw form of musical expression. A mix between urban lifestyles and designs boasted with an outstanding soundtrack, this is how SimCity made me fall in love with Jazz music.

One of the reasons I really dig the SimCity series (Or what it used to be, at least)

Never been much into SimCity, but that's awesome how a game brought you appreciation of another artform. Fapped for a great topic, good writing, and Miles Davis!

I think Bioshock was a great game for jazz.

One of my most memorable gaming moments (I have a few from that game) came when I had just cleared out the medical pavion and started heading torwards the Stienman. The whole place was quiet, crumbling, and Billie Holliday's "God Bless the Child." I love Billy and the song at that moment encapsulated everything I was feeling about Rapture at that moment. It was perfect in a way I have not found yet in gaming.

@NateT : I agree , it adds a lot to the atmosphere , Bioshock's soundtrack is an amazing reflection of the jazz Rag-Time era of the 20's and 30's.

Fallout 3 also has a great BeBop soundtrack.

I'd recommend Fallout 3. I couldn't play unless I had my Pip-boy radio on. Had a few good big band songs in there from the late 30s and 40s.

As a bari sax player myself, it's nice to see some appreciation for the classics every now and then in gaming; it really does well in creating some atmosphere. Too bad jazz is a dying genre. I'll have none of that new-fangled smooth jazz.

I really enjoy jazz. I started listening to it after watching Cowboy Bebop (which was admittedly very recent... a little over half a year ago? :P) and found out there was a soundtrack. since then I've really loved the genre for reasons I haven't really thought too much about, but I just haven't bothered finding any good music. :/ I do love listening to it, though!

great blog!

You should check out Mulatu Astatke's stuff, it may not be your cup of tea but give it a whirl. I've always been a big jazz fan as well, mainly thanks to my private trumpet teacher who showed me the simple magic of jazz improv. Anyways, nice blog.

I love Jazz and playing Jazz (And Sim City). Met some famous Jazz musicians too.

Personally I'd love to switch around rap/hip-hop with Jazz. I doubt people would do drive bys listening to Miles Davis or Wynton Marsalis.

Nice! Fallout 3 prompted me to get a bunch of awesome music from that era, and Eternal Sonata, despite not being a very good game, instantly made Chopin my favorite composer. I'd absolutely love to hear more jazz (and, honestly, just more genre variety) in games. Imagine some nice Ruby, My Dear in our games. Yes, please.

Brilliant read, my friend. I've always been a fan of playing and listening to jazz, and when I tasted the sweet sounds of SC3K I found it the perfect compliment to my city building binged. Do you also find the more atmospheric and experimental score of SC4 as gripping?

Last year, I spent several months digging through the depths of jazz music. And what fantastic things did I discover. It's a genre that takes its time. Anno '10, it has been slightly pushed aside by electronica (in terms of going lengths to discover new stuff), but that's always the case with my musical journeys. I tend to severely geek out on things for quite a while, until I decide to cross the borders to other things. But the stuff that I found is here to stay.

I didn't know that Sim City 3000 had this kind of soundtrack. Never played it. Although I was a HUGE fan of the first Sim City (played it to no end), I never played one of its successors. Shame.

Jazz doesn't get into games much so I understand where you are coming from, and its a nice change to a lot of generic rock and dance stuff.

However, I too caught the jazz (also acid jazz) bug via some anime, namely Cowboy Bebop and Gad Guard. The Bebop soundtracks are well known and fairly easy to find. However, Gad Guard, has a cool jazz soundtrack that blends well with the show.

Music is by japanese jazz band, Pe'z. My faves are opening theme 'Boomerang Boogie' and ending theme, 'Song For My Buffalo'. According to wikipedia, Pe'z also did a track for Valkyria Chronicles too (I don't have a PS3). The more you know, eh.

Check youtube for videos of their stuff.

I'll check out Sim City 3000 and its tunes, thanks for the heads up.

@The Octagon: To be honest I was dissapointed with SimCity 4 , it's way too complex for my taste. I remember the music being 'different' compared to 3000 but it was still great. But like I said I wasn't a big fan of the fourth one.

also, I will definetly check everyone's suggestions out.

You've all made me a really happy man today! Thank you!

Couldn't agree more with this. I've always loved the soundtrack since I first heard the opening theme. Always felt the songs just flowed perfectly with your city, from the large open spaces you start with to the megalopolis you could end with. Damn good music to go with what is still one of my favorite games of all time.

This is a piece from Simcity 4 that I really liked quite a bit.

I was going back and forth, deciding if I preferred the simcity 4 or Simcity 3000 soundtrack more.. and you know, that's an incredibly tough call.

BTW, where the hell are any of you people? I don't think I've ever met anyone other then myself in "real life" that liked both Simcity and Jazz. Just doesn't happen.

I kind of preferred the music in Sim City 4, but 3000 certainly had a classic soundtrack. The Sim City games (and even most any Sim game) have always had ridiculously good soundtracks, though.
