How should we market Rhythm Heaven in the US? Oh yeah, Beyonce! photo

I understand the practice of using celebs to advertise gaming -- after all, it worked well for Nintendo when they featured Yuri Ebihara in a DS commercial. Still, there's something ultimately laughable to me about the fact that Beyonce is working on an ad for Rhythm Heaven for the DS. It's official -- all indie cred surrounding Rhythm Tengoku as a series is utterly destroyed.

Beyonce chats in an interview with EW.com about what games she likes (Guitar Hero and Tetris gets mentions). My favorite part is where she mentions she has played her own songs in karaoke games and gotten a poor score. Ah-hah! Proof that Singstar is totally full of sh*t after all!

Sorry, is that Beyonce with a machete cutting a chili pepper? Because if so, then THAT'S AWESOME.

I think this is a good thing. Don't get me wrong, these ads are laughable and embarrassing, but we complain about these sorts of titles never getting the marketing exposure they deserve, and here we have Nintendo really pushing shit like Rhythm Heaven and Professor Layton. Looking at Layton's UK chart positions, it's working too!

You won't find as vehement an opponent of the "casual market" bullshit as me. However, if it's being used for the power of good like in this case, I can happily forgive it.

Whew! That's a relief, at least it's the games I have no intention of ever seeing that are getting the laughable celeb treatment.

That is a little bit of overkill, using a machette to cut a chili pepper. Where does she live, Resident Evil 5?

Be way cooler if Beyonce's husband was doing ads for Nintendo.

Since when is a game by Nintendo "indie"?

In my opinion using celebrities in ads for mainstream games like Halo is way worse than using them to popularize a niche game like this. One might even call it "good".

I'm a fan of Beyonce, actually... I loved Destiny's Child back when they debuted in 1998... XD

The little Q&A with her was really cute. I didn't know she's a bit of a casual gamer. XD That's actually really cool and proves that almost everyone plays video games in one way or another. :p

I agree with Jim. Anything that gets people who otherwise wouldn't to check out games like this can't be that bad.

Gotta give Nintendo props for the big celebrity push. A game as awesome as this deserves every bit of marketing it can get.

I don't dislike her at all....it's just that Rhythm Tengoku (and Rhythm Heaven, for that matter) is just a very Japanese game. And Beyonce is very much an American star, and I find something in there kind of ironic. I think she's beautiful though, and I'm sure her smile will sell many people on the game. As I said, it worked for Nintendo with Yuri Ebihara!

Strange but whatever it takes man. Whatever it takes.

As long as the game sells well then that's all that really matters. A great game like Rhythm Heaven is so good it could even be promoted by schmucks like Andy Dick, Courtney Love, Amy Winehouse or Gary Busey like and people would still buy it.Though I'd prefer the more attractive Beyonce any day of the week.

Who says indie has to be low profile?! If they capture a bigger audience by using Beyonce in an advertisement, then more power to them.

I'm a bit of a snob and I don't like mainstream culture mixed with gaming culture but it's Nintendo and they usually do whatever the fuck they want so..

Didn't they do the same thing in Japan?

I dunno. We should be happy, that they advertise it at all.

Guitar hero and tertis... Wow, I'm surprised she didn't mention "I used to play mario with my brothers!" to complete the "I'm a patronizing bitch pretending to be nerdy because it's cool" trifecta.

I've sat through so many speeches like this from girls at bars who said the exact same thing.

Hey if it takes a pop star to sell an excellent game, go for it.

As long as people who would have normally given the game a chance don't say "Yuck! Beyonce: the game? No thanks!", then this is fine by me.

Honestly, if I weren't already a fan of Rhythm Heaven and/or pretty knowledgeable about videogames and stuff, these ads might have caused me to pass on Rhythm Heaven out of the assumption that Beyonce did the game's music.

America Ferrera, Lisa Kudrow and Liv Tyler have advertised 'New Super Mario Bros.', 'Professor Layton' and 'Brain Age.' With this in the mix, three out of four ain't bad (take that whichever way you want)!

Last week or so I had the idea of a Rhythm Haven TV spot to be kinda like in the "Who are you?" era. I was thinking of multiple radnom sounds cmpunded in a single melody even if itshigh in beat. It kinda worked with Donkey Konga.
