How much would you pay for Gears of War add-on maps? photo

Now that everyone and their mom owns Gears of War, epic is looking for new ways to leverage Xbox Live Marketplace's ability to extend the life of old games make even more money.  Here's an exerpt posted on GAF on what Mark Rein will have in store for us, literally. This should sound familiar:

Epic thinks the way to maximize the return on Gears of War is to give the maps away for free and Microsoft thinks the way to maximize the return on Gears of War is to sell the maps. So what we’ve agreed to do is to put these maps on sale at a reasonable price then make them free a few months later. They did this with the original Halo 2 map pack and it was a huge success. Lots of people bought the maps and lots of people downloaded them when they became free. That’s what is going to happen and it seems like a fair compromise for both companies and a win-win for Gears players.

Well, hell yeah hardcore Gear heads will buy the maps early!  I know a handful of guys that spend 75% of their time gaming on this single game, so I know they'll jump on it right away.  But since there's no price tag on it and discussions are still in the air, I thought I'd pose the question to the community. What would you say would be the fair price to download the Gears of War map pack?

I'd be willing to pay 5 bucks tops. My guess is that Microsoft will probably be selling them for 100-200 points.

If I ever get around to picking up a card (are those 4000pts one available yet?) I'd probably pick up the GoW maps. But being a cheap bastard I wouldn't go out of my way to get them if I have to pay for them.
The only content I would try to buy as soon as possible is further extensions for the single player campaign (not necessarily for GoW, buy games with a good story and whatnot).

Yeah. 5 bucks maximum. I wouldn't wait for it to be free.

Anyone remember what the original Halo 2 map pack went for? I remember seeing it for about 10 bucks used recently

No higher than $10. If it was $5, i'd buy them in a heartbeat.

seeing how they already gave away 2 good maps, the next set of maps better be damn good if they're gunna charge for them. but i'd say $1.75 to $2.00 a map.

Resistance isnt charging a damn thing for new maps and modes. why would i pay anything extra for Gears? especially since i ditched Gears months ago for Vegas and Resistance...

This seems kinda reasonable, especially with the precedent set by Halo 2. I can only see the really hardcore players buying these right off the bat.

I would pay zero monies. I'm not going to pay extra for content that should be free.

Niero-I'm pretty sure the Halo 2 Map Pack was $20 new, but I could be wrong, I was XBox-less when that came out, so it was irrelevant to me. But my buddy works at a local game store and I believe it was $20.

I would pay maybe a couple($2-3) per map, or a flat fee of $10, depending on how many maps. But since I play with basically the same people every time I play, we will probably just chip on some money, buy them on one acct to see how they are, and if they are crap then just ditch them altogether. I need something closer to Old Bones, only better if I'm paying. I would be pissed if I had to pay for a map like Raven Down.

2-3 bucks a map, the more the better. Honestly, I'd rather pay $15 for 5 new maps than $2 for 1 map. the way to get milage out of this game is to give me a lot so I have to play a long time to get these maps down. I was bored with Halo 2 when the new maps were released and went nuts playing the new ones and learning them. Gears should be no different.

I will pay $0 for Gears maps.

Why?

because the first map pack was free. I know for a fact that Epic has intended to release new maps for free to the players, so i will never pay for them because if they charge money, it is just Microsoft being douchebags.

The first mappack for Gears was free, they set that precedent. Therefore, all following mappacks should be free. I got CoD2 recently, i won't pay for extra maps cus they cost moneys.

Look at PC as an example, games get patched and add new maps all the time. Nobody charges for maps on PC games, they should give free maps on the 360 as well.

OK, i actually read the article and the comments now, that first post was just my rush of blood to the head at the thought of M$ charging for Gears maps. Now that i have read it, i am even more furious.

Microsoft can suck my dick on this issue. Epic is creating the content and wants to give it away for free, so fucking let them. Microsoft has been doing a lot of thing right with the 360, this is the opposite of that. This is taking big steps backwards in my mind. Microsoft almost didn't let Epic give the first two extra maps for free and now they are making people pay for the new ones, and then give them for free later. This is Bullshit. Penn & Teller could do a whole episode on this.

This seriously pisses me off. And don't say "it cost money for bandwidth". Fuck you. It is going to cost Epic more money to actually create these maps that it is for people to download them. They aren't very big of files, they can't be more than 50mb a piece. The ONLY people that will want these maps is people that play online, meaning that they already have a GOLD account. Meaning that the bandwidth is payed for anyways.

This is just Microsoft finding a way to fuck everybody in the ass. FUCK YOU MICROSOFT. FUCK YOU. I need to find Peter Moore or somebody and put them in a fucking cage, put on my reindeer mask, and start fucking them in the asshole and see how they like it. Maybe then Epic will be able to give content to their customers for free. Seriously, i WILL rape Peter Moore.

Epic has the power here. I think that they should hold out. They should tell Microsoft that they just aren't going to release any new maps or anything for Gears of War. See how they react to that. Force Microsoft into allowing them to offer the content for free.

400-500 microsoft points tops. and thats if there are more than two. If there are only two I expect 200 microsoft points. I'm not paying that much for two maps like capcom wants me to do with lost planet.

I can't expect these maps to be more than $10.
The GRAW pack was around that much wasn't it? And it offered way more content than just 4 maps.

Also, well said namelessted. Except maybe for the raping Peter Moore part.

yeah, i was pretty sure that it was common knowledge that Epic didnt charge for new maps the first time around and i didnt have to mention it again. i am simply comparing it to another game. and what do nubs have to do with this?

Hell no. I support Epic's choice to release them free. It's cool that even though M$oft are greedy bastards they came to this ok-compromise. I'll download them for free in a few months and keep myself occupied till then.

Hell I haven't even played Gears online yet.

I DID buy the Halo 2 map pack in store simply because my friends and I played a lot of split screen, so new maps were refreshing. I think about $1-2 a map would be fair, maybe a 5 map pack for $9 would be reasonable.

Microsoft are being total douches on this one. We pay for Live already so don't give us that bandwidth crap. If Epic wants to give us free stuff, let them. They're just scared that this will make companies like EA (who want to rape us by charging for cheat codes) look bad.

What's worse is Battlefield 2142. For 20$ you get 3 maps and 2 vehicles. This is bullshit, plain and simple. And EA calls it an "expansion." Oh, there's also 10 new upgrades, but you can already use them in the original. Northern Strike my ass, I'd like to Northern Strike EA in the face.

i wouldnt pay, i know epic wants them to be free.
if MS makes them do the pay for it thing, we should
all refuse to buy them till they are made free like
epic wants in the first place!

spread it around, see if we can get people to do it,
stick it to M$'s (i cant beleive i actually used "M$" for once)
face and get our stuff for free.

Better the 'pay for play right now but free several months later' than the maps always costing something. I'd prefer if they were free, but I can wait. If they did and would always cost even a little something, you'd cut down the number of people who would want the maps, and no one would play on them, negating the whole point of a map pack. All map packs should be free no later than six months after their initial release. I'm still pissed I actually _paid_ for the Perfect Dark Zero map pack, it was one of my early purchases and I couldn't wait to buy _something_ on Xbox Live.
