How Guitar Hero Arcade rapes your wallet and then some photo

Yes, an arcade machine version of Guitar Hero (mostly based upon Guitar Hero III) actually exists. While this isn't the first time we have heard about it, I don't believe anyone has taken the time to write about their personal experience with the unit until now.

Guitar Hero Arcade may look sexy and inviting on the outside, but don't be fooled. Dtoider j00zt1n ran into the machine not too long ago and went so far as to write a community blog warning of its mischievous ways.

OKAY SO WAIT. I just dropped a dollar to play a port of a two-year-old game (with a worse controller), with a third the song list of said two-year-old game (many of which you need to pay another dollar to play), and had to compensate for poor timing judgment on the machine... And that's it? I get one song?

Guitar Hero: Arcade is the absolute epitome of a cash-in. And it's people like me, who insist on feeding more and more money to this ever-growing mass of repetition and creative stagnation, who will ensure that we'll see a sequel or four in the coming years.

I cannot say I'm the least bit surprised; this is Guitar Hero we're talking about here, after all. Make sure you read j00zt1n's entire blog and prepare to shake your head in a disapproving fashion.

Man, I knew they were trying to whore out the GH franchise right before GH III came out. I'm so sick of this. Sounds like a terrible waste of money.

The only reason the DDR machines were so hot is because they were released before the console versions. So you'd get access to lots of previously unavailable songs only in arcade format. To reverse that model completely destroys any arcade use other than the most loyal of fans.

if your a bar/club manager that doesnt want to mess around with setting up consoles tv, holding credit card, time limiting, this would be a fine option

Activision, you fail at arcades, gtfo and never come back.

Not even Konami could save this.
I'll avoid this like the plague, thanks.

The concept of making an arcade GH game is perfectly sound, it's a great thing to put in a bar or something where everyone's already drunk. But GHIII instead of World Tour and a dollar per song just seems like they didn't put much effort into it.

I would hope that this is just their proof of concept, and whatever new full game they bring out this fall (I've been thinking of it as World Tour 2, but I do know that'll be insanely confusing.) will have an arcade version ready to go at launch. Until then, though, this is kind of a waste of time.

I really don't see what's the problem. I mean have you guys not played Guitar Freaks or Beatmania in the arcades before? Also, I think that Guitar Hero is a better game than any of the guitar arcade games that came before it.

@ Chronic Logic

A lot of us already have this in our homes? It's pointless?

im not sure if your asking ChronicL if he thinks its pointless or are you stating that its pointless. If your saying its pointless because "a lot of us already have it in our homes" than your missing one of the ideas of an Arcade, and thats going out and competing with your neighborhood live in person.

also, i think some of you kids have the wrong idea of bars. no, people do not go to a bar just to get drunk and mope. People go to bars to socialize, have a good time having a few drinks, than concerning this, maybe play a few rounds of guitar hero. Manager doesnt have to set it a dollar per song, could set it at free play if inclined.

hardly any reason to jump on the btch and complain bandwagon here.

That, and metal pads are infinitely superior to plastic- unlike the arcade guitar controllers, which will very likely be more beat-up than the ones you use at home.

@JT706: heh, that was never an issue really as my friend had metal pads that we used pretty much exclusively.

I'm saying it's pointless because you can emulate the same thing at your home without being raped financially and a much better "playing" experience. Read j00zt1n's blog to understand what I'm talking about.

And how many arcades allow you to get shit faced and horde a game?

I can't speak for the guitar quality because I haven't played it, but you can't knock Activision for the pricing. In pretty much any arcade machine, the owner of the arcade sets how much it costs to play and how many songs you get when you play. Activision only gets the licensing money from the arcade cabinet maker most likely.

Don't get me wrong, I hate Activision, but they aren't the ones to blame for the bad pricing.

Wow, how can you screw up a no-brainer as simple as Guitar Hero for arcades? I love arcades, but come on-- the pricing scheme for that machine sounds like it was designed by the arcade devil himself!

EvilChicken: The pricing isn't so much what I'm upset about – It's normal and acceptable for an arcade to charge a dollar per game for any new title they get. The problem is that there isn't an option in the game to give customers more than one song per game.

So, it's partially the arcade owner's fault (sure, they could knock it down to 50¢ per game), but it's more the fault of the way the game is designed. If the option existed to allow more than one song per game, I'm sure that would be the case.

This only servers to remind me how much money I wasted in my youth playing arcade games. Could have probably of bought a car with the money I would have saved from not going to the arcade.

As far as the price of arcade games, got to a Dave & Buster's or similar locale and you'll see that Arcade games have turned into cash machines only, where the games provide only a specific amount of time to play the game before you have to continue/restart or are set up so it's impossible for you to not die once every two minutes. Server that up with the $1 to $2 cost per play, we are pretty much idiots for buying into this type of video game set-up.

I have a hard time putting more than $.50 into an arcade machiene. 1$ is bullshit, and I would say "Fuck that" if I saw this in an arcade... (besides it being a crap simon says clone game)

I totally disagree. Where i live, its only 2 quarters, I find the guitars easier to play with, i freaking love the song selection, and where i live it is in perfect sync. Dont get bitchy at me because i play expert mode too. Some of my old time favorites (slow ride, school's out, yellow) are on there, and I agree that the premium songs are absolute bullshit. All the rest i could never have a worse opinion about what you said. I mean you have to put in 20 quarters to play one premium song. Thats 5 dollars to play one crappy song. Im sticking to 2 quarters by far. (Note : It rapes your wallet but when your a kid like me you dont give a shit. Try the song at the bottom. Waste of time but tests your ultimate skills. I didnt get very far.)

There are two of these near where I live. One of them charges you a dollar to play, and certain songs require you to put in another dollar. The other one only costs 25 cents, no matter what song you play. It has a slightly smaller setlist, but the price more than makes up for it. There are only a few things about it that bug me. One, there are no confirmation options. Once you pick your character and difficulty, you can't go back. Two, you sometimes get some kid who runs up with a quarter, stuffs it in the machine, and enables 2 player mode. He will say he wants to play co-op with you, but the moment the songs starts, he'll run off and make you fail the song, wasting your quarter. Lastly, there is no whammy bar, and no option for button activated Star Power. Two things I use heavily in Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Aside from those problems, the 25 cent version is worth playing. I got to play one song on the $1 version, only because someone put 3 quarters in the machine and left. I just happened to have quarter number 4. I don't plan to pay $1 per song for something I can play at home for free.

Of course, if people knew how much the machine itself costs, they would understand the insane price.
