We've been hearing almost too much about the aesthetics of the New Xbox Experience, but why won't anyone give us more info on the cold, hard features?
GameTrailers user NextGenSucks has whipped up a video demonstrating how the upcoming optional hard drive installation process will benefit Grand Theft Auto IV.
Before you hit caps lock and begin your rant about how it's not much faster than loading games from a DVD, remember that Microsoft has gone on the record to say that the most significant changes in loading times will be seen on older Xbox 360 titles, and GTA IV isn't exactly old.

Why should anyone rant. It was never a highly promoted feature to begin with. Heck if it stops me from hearing the Jet Engine sound of my dvd drive, I'm all for it.
I'll have to use this considering my drive is fucked as it is. The thing is so noisy and freezes up my games all the damn time. It won't even open unless theres a disc in the slot. If it closes without one I whip out the butter knife.
The worst part is to get it fixed I have to pay $100 bucks or whatever it is microsoft thinks they need from me.
It still needs the disc in the drive to "authenticate" that you have the game and didn't download some boot leg copy and put it on your HDD. So either way its going to make noise. The slight speed increase in loading time I guess is worth it if you play the same game over and over and are sick of standing there for an extra 30 seconds.
Will the texture pop in GTA be improved? will it be much quieter? This is all for fallout3 anyway, right? i expect oblivion sized loading issues, the videos i have seen so far cunningly edit around the issue.

I would expect that there would definitely be less pop in of graphics, especially in games where tons of little assets are swapped out all the time. Hopefully, it just authenticates with the disc briefly, then spins it down.. the quiet would be welcome

What parrothead said. I was gonna say something almost worded the exact same thing. I still have my 20 Gig HDD from when I bought the premium, and while I recently discovered Arcade and got two games, taking out a significant chunk of memory, I don't think I need a new HDD for an assload of new space. The extra speed this gives it isn't nearly enough and noticeable for how much time and money it'd warrant, especially if a disk is still required. The difference is negligible and barely seen at all except for a few spots, and I wouldn't notice at all while playing. Hey, at least it's not required.
Frankly, I'm amazed at how little difference there is. Are Microsoft's programming regulations that strict as not to punish people who bought the Arcade, or... is the hard drive really that slow?

Look, playing this generation of video games off a DVD is like putting wagon wheels on your sports car. Imagine how much better Mass Effect would have been if it was playable off a harddrive. Not to mention that anything that can bypass the loud roar of a Xbox 360 DVD drive at full speed is a blessing.
The future is direct download not DVDs or even BlueRay.

so in general, this vid kinda makes the point moot and pointless along with informal for the fact the HDD game installs work to an extent.
