Hot 2D action in Super Mario Galaxy 2, also Toad names photo

As much as I love Super Mario Galaxy, and as excited as I am about the sequel, I'm all about the plumber moving from left to right in 2D. It's less about nostalgia and more about my desire to partake in simple, polished platforming. That's why I was so glad to hear about 2D in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Famitsu's latest issue has a bit more on that. There's a couple of screenshots of Mario moving in a 2D space in the Mushroom Kingdom. It looks great from the scan. In his 2D travels Mario encounters two Toad (or is it "Toads" plural?). It's yellow Toad and blue Toad.

Wait, why call Toads by their generic names? We actually know their names, thanks to some investigative reporting by Jonathan Holmes. Last year, in our coverage of New Super Mario Bros Wii, Holmes was passed a serious off-camera secret: their names are Bucken-Berry and Ala-Gold. There you go. Destructoid Exclusive.

I used to prefer my Mario in good ol' 2d, too, but then I played New Super Mario Bros. Wii after Super Mario Galaxy. Let's just say the former couldn't hold a candle to the latter. I hope both gel well together in this, however.

I'll always prefer 2D platformers to 3D. However, it was great to see Nintendo take such a refreshing and innovative direction with Mario Galaxy.Heck, the new orchestrated music alone is worth the price of admission.

Glad to see that SMG 2 will offer some more 2D platforming sections.

I wish 2D Mario was the standard norm and not what they decide to do for kicks every once in a while.

While it's evident that 2D platforming will be far more prominent in SMG2, I think that particular scan is only an opening section akin to the Star Festival from the first game.

Halfofme is obviously Nick Chester in disguise, jealous of the fact that I told him Dale was prettier that one time.

@ Rm88- But Galaxy and Sunshine both had "2D" bits, and they were awesome, right?

Anyway, NSMB Wii outsold Galaxy by more than 3:1 in Japan. I think that every Mario from here on out will have 2D and multi-player elements, if you like it or not.

I may be crazy, but I saw "Story" in that image, I would guess it would be something like a letter from Peach, then she gets kidnapped, but that's just any Mario Game story for you. and I can't even read Japanese?

I have to agree. It has almost the exact same art style as the still scenes where Rosalyn narrates her story in Super Mario World 1.

All I can think of from Sunshine that could be considered 2D is the 'pinball' level.

@ pedrovay2003- Yeah, Sunshine had a couple of 2D parts. You get sucked into certain pipes, lose the FLUDD, and have to go about things in an old school way.

As I recall, the SMB1 World 1-1 music plays, but acapella. The only stage that really sticks out in my mind is like a giant pinball machine, but I know there were a few others.

You should check it out!
