Hospital uses Wii Fit to help amputees photo

Patients at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds England are a sad lot. Not only do they require a lower prosthetic limb, but they also have to play Wii Fit to get used to it. Physiotherapists at Leeds have instituted a revolutionary new plan – get patients to play Wii Fit until they bugger off and sap someone else’s time.

The act of buggering off is difficult if the patient doesn't learn how to balance first. Seacroft’s senior physiotherapist Lynn Hirst is using the popular game to give patients a visual indication of how poor their weight distribution is with their fake limb. Improvement is plotted in front of the patients' eyes, possibly lifting spirits and pushing them to balance harder.

Hirst also allows her patients to play the mini-games, a terribly sweet retreat from realizing that a leg has gone missing. One patient found the therapy to be “marvelous." He was probably depressed when he said that.

That's no fair, they cheat the BMI system due to the lack of weight from missing limbs.

Wish the Wii was around when I had to go to physical therapy because my radial nerve got cut by a bone in my arm that broke.

See, I like when the Wii has other uses like this. If this is what Nintendo can do, then that's awesome.

I don't see Carnival Games helping people in hospitals, though.

Why do you sound so negative about this Brad? Do you have something against helping amputees?

I love my Wii Fit. After two months of irregular use (my bad), I'm actually starting to get definition in my abdomen and chest area and my endurance is much higher than when I started. (I finally managed to do the entire island run last night, although I'm paying for it today.)

It doesn't surprise me at all that it's being used to rehabilitate people. That board is really sensitive to shifts in balance.

Carnival Games, however, I couldn't sell to the used game market quickly enough.

With a few exceptions (Hi, Jonathan!), DToid's authors feel that anything positive for the Wii goes against their karma to the point the a positive Wii article gets some of them physically ill. You know, it's that whole "graphics > gameplay" mentality that supposedly is the benchmark for determining if you're a real gamer or not.

It's hard enough to do Wii Fit with real limbs.

Hey Brad, way to be a dick about something that is actually a good thing.

Sorry the wii isn't OMG HARDCORE GAEMS. But at least it can a fun different way of doing boring and repetitious rehab.

When did d-toid turned into a bunch of Summa clones.

Blast from the past free touch. Summa was a joke and I'm in complete agreement with the negativity of this site in general. Aside from Chad and Johnathan Holmes, the bloggers here NEED (i blame sterling) to put a negative spin at the end of every Wii story.

I understand they didn't play games before the Playstation but look it up, games survived as long as they did because they were meant for everyone.

Oh look, another D'toid cock acting all holier than thou and trying to be cool bashing on the Wii. Yeah because helping an amputee is a bad thing, right? You heartless prick. I hope it falls off. I don't see Sony or Microsoft doing anything like this.
