Horror fans, unite: Killing Floor is out now on Steam photo

The team who brought you the acclaimed Unreal Tournament 2004 mod Red Orchestra: Combined Arms recently put out another game that started out as a mod, and it's called Killing Floor.

Tripwire Interactive might not have beat Valve to the co-op survival horror punch, but the developer seems to be going in a different direction than Left 4 Dead, thankfully. Instead of offering 4-player cooperative play, Killing Floor supports up to six users, and rather than zombies, there are "experiments."

Another cool aspect of the game is the persistent perks system, which converts Steam achievements you obtain into in-game character bonuses. While Killing Floor has been available on Steam since Thursday of this week, the lack of coverage here left me feeling guilty. At only $19.99, it might be worth looking into.

Been playing this game the last few nights, its awesome. It makes a nice change from L4D, its kinda what survival mode in L4D could have been like if they gave it more depth....and way better weapons. Also im pretty sure this was a mod for UT2k4 way before L4D came out so this is the original co-op survival horror game, only now its gone retail and has far surpassed its mod origins. And for anyone who was wondering about the gfx as it uses the Unreal 2.5 engine, it looks great.

Such a good mod. I'm glad it's a stand alone now so it catches some more eyes. The mod is actually a LOT of fun. I can't wait for more maps and such. I remember on the original mod someone made "The Hive" from the Resident Evil movie and it had the room with the hologram girl. It even had the laser bear room, it was pretty cool. Either way it's worth checking out for sure. Especially if you love L4D.

It looks great but, will I play it after a few months?

Well seeing as how most of the people on my Steam friends list are playing it, I think I might pick it up.

@VengefulPenor: I'd say you would. But honestly, I don't know what you're all into. I mean, preordering the game was just 15 bucks, so it was definitely worth it.

I hope it's not like L4D. Survival mode was kinda bleh. And the story mode kind of gets old after a while.

First, try not to compare it to L4D, it's not really the same type of game, zombies aside. I can definitely see myself still playing this in a few months, especially once the mod community starts bringing out their own maps. A much better $15 spent than on most of what comes out on XBLA or PSN.

"Don't let the name throw you Jimmy. It's not really a floor, it's more of a steel grating that allows material to sluice through so it can be collected and exported."

Gonna list the good and bad things about Killing Floor.
First off, the bad parts of this game: get an OGG converter to change all the god awful horrible garage band nu metal crap that plays in the background. Just replace the music with stuff you like, that makes the game 10X better. The Boss Character is the most retarded looking thing ever and his voice his laugh worthy. Server issues is another problem.
The Good things: Overall I its a little bit of fresh air from Left 4 Dead (which I still love). Killing Floor may not be the most fantastic gem ever, but for the price its worth it. I've been playing just to get the perks, currently I'm a level 3 Support Group, and I'm still playing trying to get even higher up there. The 6 player support is awesome, and it's actually pretty hard on Normal if you start losing team members and you have waves of 150 mutants coming at ya. All in all, a good fun game, that I'm sure will have updates and new maps in the near future.
