Kotaku reports that GayGamer.net, a gay gaming news site, was attacked by hate speech, threatening emails, and denial of service attacks, eventually taking the site down.
Kotaku's own weekend editor Flynn De Marco (and the owner of GayGamer) says that the denial of service attacks started Wednesday. The web host was able to block the IP addresses of the attackers by that Friday, but that evening someone began posting hate messages, over sized images, and even death threats to the site's forums and chat room. De Marco adds that the attacks originated from the same IP address in Philadelphia.
De Marco hopes to have the site back up by Monday. Hello, faithful readers: As you might have noticed, we have had some connection issues in the last few days and now the site is completely down. I'm sad to say that we have been the target of homophobic hackers. Thankfully, they didn't get to our database so all of our stuff is still in tact. At this point we are jut waiting for our service provider to ensure everything is good before putting the server back online. Hopefully, this will be resolved by the end of this weekend, so please keep checking back. Good job on not being put down.
However, the few times I visited this site, I didn't notice anything that made it particularly more gay than any other gaming site. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, or the gay part just ammounted to "top ten game hunks" instead of babes. Unless I'm missing something, I don't frequent this site (obviously). I have nothing against this site, but as far as I'm concerned, the gay part is a gimmick.

I'm really glad to be a part of the Destructoid community where we can agree that who ever did this is a coward and deserves no more pity or respect then a tapeworm or tick. I'm glad that we can show our support for those who are judged and hated for no reason and continue to game together.

While I don't agree with their views I will pray for them and their site cause I know it sucks for anyone to get hacked. I figured Kotaku and Gay gamer were connected because Kotaku has pages of Gay Gamer posts on their website.

It's one thing to believe homosexuality is wrong because of religion. But I don't see why their god would let them harass homosexuals. Although, the Christian god did relate them to dogs. In fact, I haven't even heard a justifiable reason for thinking it's wrong.
And then there are people who don't believe in a god but still hate homosexuality (rappers). THAT I don't get.

Not that I in any way condone hacking in a free society where we can be different, but I do get tired of hearing that it is a hate crime because the site dealt with gay gamers. If it was the "male-protestant-white-straight gamer" website that got hacked, everyone would say good riddance and laugh about it.
When can we live in a free society where one's crime's are not automatically greater because of the victims sexual choices?

I believe you are basing you opinion on the antiquated Hollywood perception of a "hacker", a perception more realistically based on the typical "script kiddie". The word has been terribly maligned in recent years mostly thanks to sensationalist journalists and Hollywood films, and while I don't have the time to explain what all it really means (see this vs this.) but the guys who went after GG aren't hackers.
This sickens me. If their knowledge can't be used for the right thing, then what a piece of useless trash they are. Just wasting life and space. They just need to die.

unstoppablejuggernaut: I actually agree. While I have enjoyed what I read at GG and have all the respect for them as writers, I don't think sexuality should be spotlit and drawn attention to, and this is coming from someone who does have his gay leanings.
However, since the founding of GG led to the list of gay videogame characters, I can't complain at all.

@JIM, now that i think about it i guess i can see a reason for a gaygamer site if you were trying to meet up with people that are gay and also enjoy games but otherwise i cant really see a reason for it if they arent really adding anything to the conversation so to speak.

I read GayGamer as well as this site and joystiq. And I think that the most important part of the blog is the community side of it. Though it's few and far between, it's good to have some news that otherwise wouldn't get blogged.
It's sucks that I have never experienced homophobia in real life, and yet I've had my fair share of bad situations while playing WoW, city of Heroes, Eve and Xbox Live.
