Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Kotaku reports that GayGamer.net, a gay gaming news site, was attacked by hate speech, threatening emails, and denial of service attacks, eventually taking the site down.

Kotaku's own weekend editor Flynn De Marco (and the owner of GayGamer) says that the denial of service attacks started Wednesday. The web host was able to block the IP addresses of the attackers by that Friday, but that evening someone began posting hate messages, over sized images, and even death threats to the site's forums and chat room. De Marco adds that the attacks originated from the same IP address in Philadelphia.

De Marco hopes to have the site back up by Monday.

Hello, faithful readers: As you might have noticed, we have had some connection issues in the last few days and now the site is completely down. I'm sad to say that we have been the target of homophobic hackers. Thankfully, they didn't get to our database so all of our stuff is still in tact. At this point we are jut waiting for our service provider to ensure everything is good before putting the server back online. Hopefully, this will be resolved by the end of this weekend, so please keep checking back. You can't keep a good gay gamer down, so we'll be back before you know it, serving up all the sassy game content you can handle. Cheers, Fruit Brute

How terrible is it that a Web site gets hit by hate crime? What is this Internet coming to? Destructoid says cheers to GayGamer for dusting themselves off and going at it again. Best of luck, Flynn.

Um... are we sure it was a "homophobic" attack, or did someone from GG piss off enough anon to get the attack.

I really don't think anyone would attack another website because some gay folks run around on it. If that's the case, other gay sites would've been hit, and more frequently. I think it was probably a blatant attack because of one person, covered by some, in my eyes, transparent hate emails.

Think about it this way, if it was a gaming website called blackgamer, and someone pissed anon off, I highly doubt they'd go to the site and say "We are going to ddos you because we don't like that one guy who pissed us off." You'd get attacked by every racial slur and hate message you could think of.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand the point of website for gay gamers? I don't give a damn that you're gay. I'm sure nobody here cares that I'm straight or Jewish or tall or Mexican, so why do we care that you're gay? Was the website a response to 13-year-olds on Halo calling each other fags? If so, what a waste of time. Halo players are on the bottom of the food chain, just below Youtube commentators. Coincidently, both do nothing but call each other fag at every occasion. Let's all move on.

Yeay for the dtoid community! The support for GG reminds me how distant we are from the XBL crowd.

@FreePablo. Its nice to know that sexual orientation does not play a part in your choice of gaming communities. For most people, it does not matter, but if it helps you to relate to a specific type of person better than others, wether it be another girl relating better to females or a gay gamer relating better to other gay gamers, its a comfort thing, and there is nothing wrong with that. Everyone wants to identify with people who are similar to them or have had similar experiences at some point in time. I am not saying that it would be good to stick to only a community of like minded people, but its nice to know the support is there!

I'm sort of in between on that support thing. While, like it's been said it's nice to find people you have things in common with I think overall it can lead to some negative results. I could just as easily see a "whitegamers.com" that doesn't get the support gaygamers gets and with good cause. I also don't get the thing with girl gamers sort of annexing themselves. I just really support integrating all gamers into one community.

In case anybody sees irony in the fact that I'm questioning groups in the gamer community while the community itself is a group, gaming is something we can choose. Just like in real life segregation based on something that can't be freely chosen isn't fair whether it's race, sex, sexual orientation and so on. While you can still go to gaygamers or a girl gamer website you're still the odd man out if you're not part of the label and I think it's an awkward place to put people in for no real reason.

As long as they go at it in the privacy of their of homes....

I kid, I kid. In all seriousness, best of luck getting things back together and fighting off future attacks. It's sad, but I'm sure this won't be the last immature retard to come along and try this.

Is gay bashing still relevant? Really? We are in the future, people; bigotry is so 90's.

@itemforty: I’d like to think so, but unfortunately, I must say that’s untrue. I fear that bigotry will never go away — not in the near future or the distant future, and certainly not in the here and now. The term “homophobia” is a very apt one in this case: people fear what they do not know or understand, and attack it to feel better about themselves. It’s a sad but true aspect of humanity. Best of luck to the gang over at GG in getting back on their feet.

Holier than thou FTW!!

Not to take this in the wrong direction entirely, but that's a fucking asshole statement. The guy said he'd pray for them. Last time I checked, that's a positive thing. (I realize that he could've been talking about praying for their homosexuality, but we don't know that. Don't assume. It just makes an ass of... you, mostly.) I swear, I want to fucking split open people who cry "holier than thou!" whenever something even remotely religious is expressed.

*puts halo back on head*

I'll support GayGamer.com when they start StraightGamer.com. Oh no, that's right I still won't. I don't support any site that puts sexuality, or gender, or race as a focus of their gaming site. Those things have nothing to do with gaming and I have no respect for any girl gamer, gay gamer, white gamer, or similar sites.

Not to say I condone the hack though, that's still a douche move.

Also, just because I think being gay has no place in gaming doesn't mean I have a problem with anyone being gay. I don't give a shit who or what you want to fuck.

Chris, good point. I agree. I hate it when people make their sexuality, or their gender or skin color or anything else, their identity. I'm not saying that that's what the staff of GayGamer does, but that's the impression the site name gives. Frankly, we're all human beings. Let's just identify ourselves as that and have done with it. (This reminds me of that anti-RE5 black blog, Black Looks. Exact same problem.) An interesting thought.

Banj, hush up or I'll steal your wife. ;)
