Kotaku reports that GayGamer.net, a gay gaming news site, was attacked by hate speech, threatening emails, and denial of service attacks, eventually taking the site down.
Kotaku's own weekend editor Flynn De Marco (and the owner of GayGamer) says that the denial of service attacks started Wednesday. The web host was able to block the IP addresses of the attackers by that Friday, but that evening someone began posting hate messages, over sized images, and even death threats to the site's forums and chat room. De Marco adds that the attacks originated from the same IP address in Philadelphia.
De Marco hopes to have the site back up by Monday.
Hello, faithful readers: As you might have noticed, we have had some connection issues in the last few days and now the site is completely down. I'm sad to say that we have been the target of homophobic hackers. Thankfully, they didn't get to our database so all of our stuff is still in tact. At this point we are jut waiting for our service provider to ensure everything is good before putting the server back online. It's not like homosexual hackers are trying to take down GameFAQs.
However, the few times I visited this site, I didn't notice anything that made it particularly more gay than any other gaming site. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, or the gay part just ammounted to "top ten game hunks" instead of babes. Unless I'm missing something, I don't frequent this site (obviously). I have nothing against this site, but as far as I'm concerned, the gay part is a gimmick.

I'm really glad to be a part of the Destructoid community where we can agree that who ever did this is a coward and deserves no more pity or respect then a tapeworm or tick. I'm glad that we can show our support for those who are judged and hated for no reason and continue to game together.

It's sucks that I have never experienced homophobia in real life, and yet I've had my fair share of bad situations while playing WoW, city of Heroes, Eve and Xbox Live.
