Far too many FPSs these days try to copy Call of Duty or Halo without even thinking about what made those games great. Not enough developers attempt to do Half-Life 2, and that's utterly insane.
(Yes I find Metro 2033 and both Bioshocks unplayable now,let the fanboi hate beging)
Now if we were talking Multi-player I'd say Fear Combat and Battlefield Bad Company 2 are right up there for me.
i think it's betweem half life 1 or dues ex.
what was so good about it?.
HL2, "best overall shooter experience made to date"? Lolno. Did everyone forget that HL2 didn't even launch with multiplayer?
Some people like Majora's Mask's enviroment, some people don't.
If you like the type of eerie atmosphere HL2 created, then of course you would love it. HL2 is amazing for me, and also, if you didn't play it back in 2004 then you would probably not like it much today, since many great FPS games have come out since, and they've taken quite a few elements from HL2.
How does no multiplayer make HL2 not as important? Putting aside that it came with Counter-Strike Source, multiplayer isn't even part of this discussion. The developers are talking about the story and level design, not how much of a dick measuring contest you can have with high scores.
To me, the shooting mechanics are irksome, there's just no weight to the movement and the gameworld can often feel empty. I also found that there was just no ambience to the game and i hated having to stand around while a 'digital actor' talked a load of rubbish to me.

Dude, it shipped with the most widely played PC multiplayer game ever made.. Counter-strike. Not to mention it was only a few weeks later Deathmatch came out. And even if those last two sentences weren't true I still wouldn't see your point. How does a game not having something take away from all of its good points?
"I also found that there was just no ambience to the game"
I'd get your money back. Doesn't sound like you got the right game.
And I don't disagree that CERTAIN elements of Bioshock were brilliant- the atmosphere, the voice acting, the music were all brilliant, and the game was a blast to play. I just don't think it's the "games are art" masterpiece everyone seems to make it out to be, mostly due to a few glaring flaws (I.E. its fear of actually being called science-fiction, its contradictory themes, and the fact that the atmosphere gives out at a point for cheap thrills. Also the story's themes get really heavy handed and pretentious at a point)
I'm not looking for a flame war though- I guess my first post made it seem that way. Just throwing it out there that I don't think Bioshock could ever touch Half-Life 2 in terms of what makes video games A. Fun and B. Art at the same time.
I don't know about you guys but looking for cinderblocks wasn't exactly riveting stuff for me, or the horrendous vehicle segments.
If homefront is using HL2 as a big inspiration, all that tells me is to avoid it like the plague.
