We've been chatting to Kaos Studios' Dave Votypka about the upcoming THQ-published game, Homefront. The studio has stated before that Valve's Half-Life 2 is a big inspiration for the game, and we wanted to know how deep that inspiration runs.
"For me personally, Half-Life 2 is probably the best overall shooter experience made to date," he says. "I view entertainment as escapism, and that can take many forms, but being able to step out of our everyday existence into an alternate world for a little while is magical, whether it’s with a book, a movie, or a game. The games I most enjoy playing, and creating, are ones that create a compelling game world that focuses on supporting immersion as much as possible.
"Half-Life 2 created, what I call, a world reminiscent of the book 1984; and the techniques they used to deliver it supported immersion and escapism into their world more than any other shooter has. Their no cutscene approach was a huge part of this, never pulling the player out of their cognitive immersion, which so many games often do with various interruptions. Seamlessly transitioning between combat, story and character moments, goes a long way towards maintaining immersion."
He goes on to talk about how Homefront is learning from Half-Life 2: "With Homefront, the occupation USA setting provides us with the opportunity to create a deep game world; one that can be very interesting to escape to and experience. Therefore, we wanted to maximize player immersion with our world, and we drew inspiration from what Valve did with the techniques they used to deliver theirs.
"That said, we’ve put a large focus on environmental narrative (what you see tells you its own story), having civilians throughout most of the game and seeing how they are affected by the cost of war, as well as allied character depth and development (emotions and human flaws). By letting the game world drive the ideas in these areas, one of the results is what we call “why we fight” moments, where the player experiences all of the items above during gameplay, and as a result has a much stronger emotional connection and reason to pick up the gun."
Sounds good to me. Very few would argue that Half-Life 2 isn't a bloody great first-person-shooter, and any game that aspires to its lofty goals deserves all the encouragement it can get. That said, do you agree that HL2 is the peak of the shooter genre? Let us know!
and i guess multi too since u did get css with it...
But I'll give Homefront the benefit of the doubt because it genuinely looks like something new.
You don't get quality and atmosphere like that anymore. IF ONLY VALVE TIME DIDN'T EXIST.....
Nope. Besides the very repetitive structural design and shallow mechanics, it was far too padded for my liking. That, and the physics engine puzzles were too drawling and narcissistic. The narrative style was great; the narration and plot, not so much. I feel Bioshock handled the style much more solidly.
Good call on Episode 2. My favorite segment of the series by far.
Let me guess, bloated and indulgent? Ah I'm only taking the piss.
Someone reminded me of COD4. I have to agree that the first Modern Warfare trumps almost every other fps in terms of immersion and atmosphere by virtue of a first person narrative.
Kind of like how I'm not big on RPG's, but Mother 3 IS the best thing I've ever played.
The in-game stuff I've seen for homefront looks dire compared to the hype/trailers news reel style stuff. I hope they actually make something fresh and interesting and there's nothing wrong with examining Half Life 2 for that. Maybe examine Thief 2 as well though? For some stealth bits where you have to evade the enemy because they are too strong? I dunno. I just think it might end up too 'Cover and Shooting' like all the rest of them there games what have guns.
"Please kill the little sisters- I want you to!- but you still have a choice."
"Oh btw I control everything you do."
"2 ENDINGS LOLOLOLOL IT'S NONLINEAR STORYTELLING"
I agree with this guy The one from Kois studios...I'm kind of a fan of shooter I Didn't like MW1 or 2 but I love Black-ops but it's a matter of Opinion really everyone has something to say about everything ya know? Whether it be good or bad this guy says HL2 was AWESOME another says Meh...And another guy say It was just lame...So there ya go. No need to post a long comment comparing shooters or hating them and what not. But If homefront is anything like HL2 it's gonna be awesome. And as For Alyx...Mmm *fap fap fap*
COD4>every COD
HL>EVERY FPS
Half-Life is not a great shooter, but it is an incredible experience.
I'm still not sold on Homefront. I've seen similar setups before in other titles, and I really don't need/want another FPS.
I definitely prefer HL1 though. But its mostly just cuz of the MP5s grenade launcher sound.
And no, I DO NOT PLAY CALL OF F***IN' DUTY.
What I never got is the whole bit about Half-Life 2 having all this atmosphere and escapism. Maybe I should've tried harder. And Alyx Vance who I still believe is the most overrated character in videogames to date.
But really, in my opinion, those are tiny criticisms. The gameplay was there.
It's clear that Homefront influenced a lot in HL2. On the trailer you can see a guy looking out a train to the oppressive atmosphere beyond. Not a coincidence I feel now that I have read this.
I thought of Half-Life 2 when I saw some of the single player screens for Homefront. It looked like it did a lot of the storytelling stuff in-game, which is nice.
