Downpour looks good, though. I just want another Fatal Frame, actually.
as much as i love your list Silent Hill 4 should definitely be up there, it's probably the last Team Silent game ever made.
hopefully downpour can at least stick close to the first four silent hill games. i still want a Silent Hill 3 like game. maybe suda 51 can make one with Akira? :)
the only way we're going to get the game we want is if we can get enough SH fans to fund a Kickstart, to re-hire the original team to make a silent hill-esque rip-off, without konami's involvement.
While I blame Konami for shuffling one of its better properties onto western developers (who've never really been able to duplicate the atmosphere of J-Horror...even J-Horror heavily based on W-Horror, e.i. Silent Hill), I still curse Helix for being unable to capture a horror like atmosphere...that kind of thing comes from the artist at hand, not the person giving them direction. If they had been properly passionate enough about the game, it would have delivered some level of scare.
I have no doubt that Homecoming is even MORE down that path, but it's funny how people are saying "Yeah, the more actiony SHs are shit, and SH3 is the best!!!" It's like bemoaning the over-abundance of FPS on modern consoles and then saying "I wish we were back in the good old days of Doom and Wolfenstein".
Also, for the record, Shattered Memories had literally no combat, unless you count running for your life as combat. It also had an entire cast, an enemy type and many buildings, signs etc, that would be different depending on how you played the game - for the first time, SH was changing to the player's personality and mentality rather than either being a rusty hell or James' personal version. That was of course made by a UK developer rather than the US one that made Homecoming.
and thanks for the linking Jim. For all we know these were just angry comments made a year ago, and nothing to get worked up on.
SH:The Room is hardly a masterpiece. It is underrated, sure. But i can justify the criticism - the game PLAYED bad. It had great concepts, Room concept itself was brilliant and the idea of reusing the older "levels" was good. But it decided to have more emphasis on the action with the action part being rather bad.
It kills me that The Room was basically their last hurrah, because it's the only SH that I had to force myself to finish. I just didn't enjoy it, at all.
Home comeing was not a bad game and SH2 is easily my favourite but the lack of inversion in the options was HORRIBLE.
If they had allowed me to invert my camera control and not just when aiming then I wouldn't have sold my copy the very next day at a $20 hit to me. I literally was running around running into walls and staring at the roof, it was brutal.
Double Helix got way too much heat, they changed Silent Hill and although it was different and wasn't what we expected, I still liked it. I hear this all the time:" Shoulda changed the name to something other than Silent Hill, THEN it would have got better scores."
But shouldn't a game be measured on ITSELF and NOT a comparison to other games (even if it is a series?) Maybe the fans built up standards, but whatever. I know for a fact that you didn't like it, and can come up with a big list why. Just sayin'.
here is how i see it. They are not blaming Konami for interfering with development.
What he means by the comment is that they are not Team Silent, and so nobody should expect them to be Team Silent. If fans want to vent anger, they should do so at Konami for disbanding Team Silent, and not at Double Helix for failing to emulate that studio.
Yeah, pretty much right. Konami may be to blame at least in part, but I'm not sure I'll just accept as gospel somebody telling me it's all the publisher's fault when the person telling me that is from a developer with this resume:
2008 - Silent Hill: Homecoming
2009 - G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
2010 - Front Mission Evolved
It's not as if Double Helix is burning up the charts, and it's not as if they've shown improvement with their two critically panned follow up games. If anything, they've made WORSE games since Homecoming, so perhaps it's partly on a bad developer and not just a game of "let's blame Konami". But I suppose G.I. Joe was EA's fault, and Front Mission Evolved was Square-Enix's fault. Right?
Just looking at Konami, they also farmed out another of their famous franchises to a fairly new western developer with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. And that was also a pretty drastic departure from the tradition of the series, as planned by Konami. But MercuryStream pulled off a game that was generally critically praised, instead of Double Helix managing to make something that was fairly universally viewed as mediocre at best.
I liked that you couldn't fully kill those ghosts too. Some of the imagery and atmosphere in 4 is the creepiest and most threatening in the series IMO.
I don't think anyone is likely to surpass SH2 and Konami had a good run with their internal games.. Perhaps they worked out they didn’t really know how to improve on the forum and decided it'd be better for other people to try. I really don't mind seeing different teams' spins on SH though I'd like to see an internal team revisit it eventually.
Actually, i strongly disagree with you here. What is wrong with going to a game series expecting the same spirit to exist in each title? Each of the games made by Team Silent had the same feel and the same spirit to them. Homecoming didn't feel the same, didn't have the same spirit, and it blatantly violated rules that were well established in the Silent Hill universe. If I want a mediocre horror game, Homecoming can scratch that itch. If I want a Silent Hill game, Homecoming doesn't scratch the itch at all. When you use an established series name, certain things are expected. Shattered Memories came the closest to capturing the feel and spirit of the originals, but despite that, it is still not there.
While Team Silent made games with a psychological horror that encourages a loss of sanity, the games had issues. Thru the course of almost ten years, they still could not develope a decent combat system, and they continued the exact same, tedious puzzle piece gameplay.
The sales of Silent Hill 3 and subsequest The Room only proved that even an Akira Yamouka soundtrack is not going to give the series a million units sold anymore.
And the problem with Silent Hill as a franchise is not that entries try to be different. On the contrary, it's when we get Pyramid Head cameos and *classic enemies* that things truly fall apart. Nurses are the goombas of the franchise at this point, and familiarity the death knell to an unnerving, bizarre and fascinating game world.
If you're really into rust and ladies without faces I guess it'd be a bummer, but I think the best thing for the series is to let devs go wild with what they reckon Silent Hill means. Shattered Memories' main problem was that it wasn't particularly scary, but that was a game design misstep rather than anything offensively wrong with the world they'd built or the story they told.
"In the earlier games you used a plank of wood and a steel pipe most of the time, in SH3 you suddenly have samurai swords, flame throwers, SMGs and - admittedly as an intentionally 4th-wall-breaking bonus - a magical girl costume complete with magical HEATHER BEAM."
Uhh, at no point did I come across those weapons (except maybe the sword and machine gun which never has any ammunition for it anyway) until after one playthrough, in which case you still don't really have a point. Your keyword there was BONUS. Silent Hill 1 had a crazy fucking laser gun once you completed it and a stupid Alien ending. Silent Hill 2 had a stupid Dog ending if you wanted it. I see nothing wrong with throwing in a few silly and interesting bonus weapons after you complete the game, after you've been scared and gone through all those unexpected moments for another playthrough.
SH3 scared the crap out of me. I never thought it was getting dumbed down at any point. The katana made things a bit easier I think, but I was never in a rush to get into close ranged fights where I would get my ass handed to me anyway. If I ever wanted to play the game again after I completed it, they better throw some stupid shit in there to keep it interesting as it's definitely not going to scare me on the same level again.
Your example of comparing FPS is extremely flawed when comparing the "dumbing down" and orientation of action between SH3 and Homecoming. Whilst I don't have a problem with Homecoming making the character (and enemies) more capable in combat, SH3 was the same game with the same combat as SH1 and 2, although they threw in a block button, a sword (useless in corridors anyway) and a few awesome extras after you finished the game proper.
At the start of the game, when you're in that blood stained theme park, in the dark with a pistol, machine gun and lots of other weapons and the ability to block attacks, I was still TERRIFIED. At no point did I feel empowered because I was playing as a little girl, the controls weren't made for balls out action, I didn't want to get up close and try to risk blocking the huge bloody monster's attacks and didn't for one second whip out the machine gun to run around on some "dumbed down" massacre. I wanted to get the fuck out of there.
SH3 was not dumbed down compared to previous games. You were not given a flamethrower and superhero abilities until you finished the game with little to no weapons that made it "dumbed down". You were given a block button, sure but that's not dumbing down as much as making the crappy close combat somewhat more tolerable. SH3 was awesome in that it had a great revenge story, a somewhat relatable, likable and believable character in a fucked up world relevant to the first game and Silent Hill mythos, an amazing and scary atmosphere AND some of the best and most interesting end of game bonuses which made replay value soar through the roof when compared with the last 2 games.
DENIED.
Fans of well made games cant say that homecoming is a horrible game, well they could but they'd be mistaken. and i never heard any reason that made solid sense as to why Homecoming was so horrible a silent hill game. the gasmeplay was solid, the atmosphere was too silent hill-ish to be honest. The combat system was a fucking GODSEND to the series. Gameplay-wise, Homecoming was hands down the best silent hill game. So the fact that i can move and have my weapon at the ready AT THE SAME TIME to attack a monster is horrible. so that lame ass excuse of lackluster control to make the game scarier is whats really good..?? REALLY..?? Since when..??
The only thing i could see fans long time fans bening disappointed in homecoming is in the somewhat lack of complexity of the storyline ((atleast compared to the first three games in the series)), which is one of the strengths of the Silent hill franchise but it was still a very solid and well told, dare i say ENGAGING story!!! But thats debatable because silent hill is one of those games that noone , not even the character even knows whats goin on and theres alot of depth in the the storyline of homecoming that i think most fans probably didnt know until they looked it up on the net.
and alot of so called fans are butthurt over the cameo appeareance of Pyramid head and some production aesthetic nods to the 2006 film. and then there were some ridiculing of the graphics of Homecoming with most detractors stating that the graphics were last gen and that 2 and 3 actually LOOKED BETTER by comparison.. WOW.. thats like totally untrue.. i have ALL of the true silent hill games and i can say for a fact that SH2 & 3 while still looking very good to this day, they have nothing on the graphics of SH Homecoming. thats not to say Homecoming's graphics are among the best of this current gen's capabilities but it's still a nice looking game that most certainly looks like it belongs on the Xbox360.
The atmosphere and sound, another staple of the silent hill series ((as well as the main reason i fell in love with the franchise)) is pretty much among the BEST if not the best representation of how to do a silent hill game. Double Helix gets mad props for the work they put into making this game feel so scary and foreboding ..it looked like something right in league with the previous entries of the series. the sound might i add is one of composer Akira Yamaoka's finest works to date. he crafted a beautifully haunting and remarkably fitting score. the monsters were truly a sight to behold and more than did their job of creeping me the hell out. thats more than i can ever say about shitty ass SH shattered memories!! and believe me that game really shattered my memories as i try and forget about it every chance i get.
but to be fair there were some gripes i did have with silent hill homecoming and that was the fact that the game was too dark in alot of places in the game even with your light on. sometimes i thought i didnt have my light on and the display options were adjusted to peak settings. i also wished they went into deeper detail and character development with the various parents and children of the town as they greatly were just as important to understanding what was really going on within the story. oh and youalso had the series staple of backtracking ..fucking backtracking.. all the silent hill games have you back tracking ..siigh why is that..?? oh well
anyone that posts their dislikes of homecoming please be succinct in your reasoning because most of what i heard has been things that made me wonder if we were playing the same game or if they mistakenly mistook one SH entry for another. there were some glitch issues on the ps3 version as that version was slightly less polished than the 360 version. slightly. complaints of glitches and lack of story complexities were the only things that i can understand someone not liking a game. therwise i think most of the naysayers are talking outta their ass..
silent hill homecoming is one of the best and last true silent hill games we'll ever play
I guess Konami's going to have to show a little support in one of its best series or its going to get overrun by its mistake not too.
Downpour looks good so far though.. I cant wait to see some gameplay vids for it.
2008 - Silent Hill: Homecoming
