Home-ophobia? Word censorship in PlayStation Home comes under fire photo

The San Francisco Chronicle has a nice little article about PlayStation Home, discussing the problems that have hit the "service" since launch. Aside from the bugs and glitches, the main focus of the article is on direct user impact and the censorship of words that some feel has gone too far.

Michael Marsh is a 38-year-old straight man and an active supporter of gay rights. He tried to set up a gay/straight alliance club in Home, only to find that words like "gay" and "bisexual" were taboo in Sony's virtual world. Marsh says he had already raised this issue during the private beta phase, but that nothing was done.

"I can understand if they're filtering out profanity, but if feel like it's discrimination," claims Marsh. "By blocking a word like 'gay,' which is a preferred term by the gay community, you're encouraging it as a bad word."

According to the report, that's not the half of it. Even the word "Hello" has been flagged because it contains the word "Hell" within it. You can't say "Christ" or "Jew" either. The article also touches upon the launch problems with suspended voice chat, the user harassment (well there's not much else to do) and the fact that Sony is already charging money for everything.

Sony argues that Home is in beta, and that would almost be a fair reason, were it not for the fact that Sony has been working on this for years, is charging money for items already and swore up and down that Home wouldn't be released until it was almost perfect. I don't think saying "it's a beta" is a good enough excuse here. That, and Sony should just let the dude have his gay club. Hell Christ Jew.

[Thanks Adam]

I wonder how the Paedophile General will get past the Board of Censors?

In today's age, you are damned if you do, damned if you don't. Had Sony not implemented features, I'm sure we'd be hearing someone complain about the lack thereof. You can probably credit this to lawyers fearful of some sort of lawsuit b/c of offending some poor oppressed group of over sensative people. (Not referring to any one group, but there is a reason the censorship is what it is)

There's no reason they can't implement a kids mode that blocks out offensive language or groups and an adult mode where you can use words deemed offensive to certain audiences.

Didn't they pay attention when Blizzard caught shit for doing the same thing in WoW?

Semantics be damned, Sony isn't shutting down a club for gay/straight alliances, they're just not allowing the words "gay" and "bisexual" be used in the title. All the Home user would need to do is use some other words or abbreviations to use in the club title.

Sure, that's causing potential members to have to jump through some hoops to find it in a club keyword search, but ultimately they're not really shooting down the IDEA or membership context of the club.

And MOST CERTAINLY anybody IN Home, or anybody who has ever been online in a console game can attest to the fact that Sony has censored these words because they're FAR more likely to be ABUSED than used in any type of positive context.

As much as Home is a pseudo "public" space, it's still a private service and Sony can do with it as they please.

Also there's a friggin AUTOMATIC button that says "hello" ... people who are typing it (by itself) into their keypads should be smacked.

You're correct. Sony has the right to do what it wants with Home. However, we have the right to criticize Sony for whatever it chooses to do.

FrankieViturello, considering that the site is "gaygamer.net" and not "homosexualgamer.net" or "slightly lavender gamer.net", having the main part of the name censored is kind of important. Just because a word has potential for abuse, doesn't mean it should be censored like a typical swear word. I've heard the word "frog" used as a derogatory term to describe french people, doesn't mean it should be censored.

Also, some people have USB keyboards and can type 90 wpm, typing "hello" takes a fraction of a second and is much more convenient than pulling up a menu and selecting it. Just sayin'.

FrankieViturello, if we censor words based on potential abuse, the list of censored words would encompass the entire language. Words like "gay" get all the spotlight, but a lot of the really important abuse goes on with what people do to words like "life" and "choice" and "values." IMO that kind of 'word-abuse' has been ultimately more damaging, at least in the USA, than using 'gay' in a negative way. One is obviously banal, the other is insidious.

Jim, I didn't say you didn't have the right to criticize Sony.

I was just offering a logical slant on the topic.

Home is still in beta and based on the recent audio gimping, Sony is obviously taking the "cautious" / "sterile" approach to how they're choosing to deal with public conversation.

I have absolutely nothing against using/reading any of the words that Sony has chosen to censor ... and while on one hand it can be insulting to one's views, lifestyle and/or intelligence ... I must again go back to my understanding of how the risk / reward of leaving those words censored or un-censored.

Yes, they can be used in a positive, intelligent fashion ... but having been an online gamer since the early days of BBS door-games, I'm going to estimate that the positive use of the word "gay" vs. the negative / hateful / abusive use - would probably be around 25% / 75% in the "Home" world.

While it may not be something you WANT to hear, that's the sad reality of it.

It's just Sony not taking any risk.

I'm pretty sure their terms of usage eliminate any "freedom of speech" or other civil rights that you'd be privy to in a real public space.

Feel free to hire a lawyer and start a civil suit against Sony if you feel strongly enough about it.

It's your right.

Not that I WOULD EVER use any of the words that they've chosen to censor in a hateful manner.

And while they may be offensive in hateful context, it doesn't ruin the experience any more than it does hearing it in an FPS.

"And I mean real homophobes here, not the general idiots who just think saying "you're gay" is really, really funny."

That's not Homophobia, that's you being incredibly PC. I know for a fact, that at some point in your life you've said something like " Damn, the fridge has broken, that's pretty gay". Much like how the term gay used to only mean Happy, It's just starting to evolve further once more. It's people who are too PC in the first place who get this shit censored and banned.

Aurain:

You misinterpret me. I never said people who say "gay" are homophobes. I actually said the opposite. You taking that quote and saying it's not homophobia only agrees with my statement.

Wow... It's amazing how much people can find at fault with a FREE community service.

Sure they charge for clothing and furniture, but so what? As for the word banning, that's what a beta is for. You can think of all the different words you'd like to ban, but there'll always be ways around it. It's better to learn from the users, then tweak the filters.

I'm in the EU Home, so I don't even have any of the cool stuff some of you are complaining about!

I haven't had any problems with the folk on it, and it's quite relaxing playing some chess against somebody I've never met... provided they don't run away before being beaten!

The fact that people see a need to have a gay alliance club in Home is just sad. Really, we understand that you're gay, so just shut up about it. I don't go around bragging that I'm straight, so why do gay people see a need to let everyone know that they're gay.

I can see Sony's reasoning here, as allowing people do simply go around saying that they're gay is pretty much opening them up to a world of abuse and harassment. I'm not saying that I condone such harassment, but I will say that I hate the fact that some gay people need to flaunt it, and I'd say that they deserve whatever attention they bring to themselves, whether negative or positive. It may come off as mean, but damn...I'm tired of hearing that people are gay when it isn't even relevant to the environment in which I'm hearing it.

I hate the argument that I can't complain about Home because it's free. Do you realize how much time and resources Sony wasted on developing Home that could have been spent doing something worthwhile like revamping the XMB interface or improving online functionality? I don't care if Home is free or not, it's terrible. It's so bad, it's almost insulting that Sony would unleash this on the public and think people would actually enjoy it.

Going to email Niero to find exactly whats going on with the filter, but I think have a fair idea. Anyway, rough gist of the comment was:

@necrozen:

I don't believe for a second using the word 'gay' as a generic insult is wrong, it is in no way related to the sexuality connotations, in much the same way when you use it to describe someone's sexuality it is in no way related to the previous use of the word (happy, gleeful etc).

Definitions and usages change, which is why context is everything. The word should not be censored, but the idiots who misuse them to cause offense should be.

@kevinski--
Home is a social networking interface, designed (poorly) to organize various people and communities in a virtual space to do... whatever it is that people do in Home. Which, at this point, seems to be not a whole lot. Gay gamers want to form their own community groups on Home so they can meet other people who are in a minority of a minority-- I mean, gay gamers aren't exactly the most common folk out there. The atmosphere of online gaming does breed something of a necessity for these kinds of groups to form, despite the fact that you find it personally distasteful and offensive.
